2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Maxim Kovtun's SP will be L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole and Sing, Sing, Sing by Louis Prima. His FS will be Ruled By Secrecy by Muse.

I'm happy he's doing a Muse song for his FP. It worked for him so well in the 2014-2015 season.

SP. I have to say I'll miss the "I Can't Dance" SP. Not too sure about his SP choice. But anything better than Beethoven.

Update: I'm listening to the FP song. And I must say, yep the song will work. I feel like it'll be a good one for him.

So excited! Onegin is great! Are they using the score from the opera? I didn't know there was a musical.

Nope, they are using some piece from the musical itself. Here's the link to the official site: http://musicalonegin.com/#main There's a lot of vids on youtube, unfortunetely I haven't watched it myself, but I've heard a lot of positive feedback.

I'm underwhelmed to say the least. Another Muse song that sounds just like every other Muse song, and one of the most played out warhorses of all. :disapp:

At least Muse worked for him. Whereas Beethoven....almost NO help except for nationals.

But I DO have to agree with you on that it did sound similar to the one he did back in the 2014-2015 season. At least it's not a warhorse of the exact same song, though I can totally understand why you think that.

I admit I AM underwhelmed with his SP choice as well. Well the "L.O.V.E" one. Actually, maybe both. But more on the former for me.

Well here's someone who won't make any "Most Interesting Musical Choices" end-of-season lists.

But I do know someone who does *ahem* ;)

I have no idea who Muse are, and sadly am not about to educate myself (other than isn't that some pseudo dramatic music that Jeremy skated to once?)

But L.O.V.E. and Sing Sing Sing I know. I think folks aren't commenting because they know those songs as well as I know Muse. I really like both those tunes, particularly Nat King Cole. But I do not know how those songs can possibly be cut together. This has the potential for another Kovtun :scard7:

We shall see:popcorn:

I didn't know about Muse either - prior to being "educated" by figure skating.... Not a happy discovery for me. Yes, Jeremy's Exogenesis was Muse. Except now we have the added "joy" of vocals... I was indifferent to the instrumental versions, the "singing" however... (shudders - Woe, woe, thrice woe!) I hope for your sake you'll enjoy any such vocal encounter better than I have...

I agree. I don't mind the music. I actually love Coomes & Buckland's Butterflies & Hurricanes program. But, IMO, the Muse vocals are just ghastly. Duhamel & Radford's program from last season--like howling.

That was my first time hearing Muse vocals... I couldn't believe my ears - I didn't want to believe my ears! "Instant visceral loathing" best describes my feelings, I'm afraid... :slink:

Probably something along the lines of, "what the heck is this caterwauling and who thought it was a good idea to make it a warhorse?" It sounded like sirens...and I mean the police-car-caught-you-speeding kind, not singing mermaids. Hehe...

People have a right to their tastes, of course. But I am tempted to give these posts a thumbs down, honestly. After all this time I am still surprised how many old-fashioned people there are among figure skating fans. Actually it's more than old-fashioned. I don't even know how to call it. There are people on these forums for whom almost any piano music is "tinkly/tinkling", those for whom almost any violin music is "schreechy", those for who almost all non-classical contemporary instrumental music or a contemporary instrumental cover of any kind of music (classical, contemporary pop songs, anything) is "elevator music", people for whom all vocals that are not crystal clear, soft and pretty are "screeching", "wailing/howling", "sirens" and other unflattering ephitets that are reserved for singer with rougher and/or lower voices than a tenor or soprano. In fact, for many skating fans any music that is not soft and pretty is "schreeching". I am starting to suspect that there are really many old people with extra sensitive ears among skating fans.

I guess I am a bit allergic to standard and narrow (sorry, but this seems true) tastes, and from time to time I just can't keep quiet about this.

To be clear, I am not a Muse fan, although I do like what I've heard of their music in a superficial way, so it's not about that.

^ and I'm tempted to say, the same goes for you, lauravvv. To be honest, I don't like Muse voices enough to dowload the songs and deliberately listen to them, but I don't mind them too much in FS as I like skating diversity. But battling strong words aimed at Muse vocals with calling some people 'old-fashioned' and dragging age into the debate as if taste in music was somehow related to it, or if thinking Muse vocals howly automatically meant being old-fashioned... not cool. :disagree:

To return to topic, I agree with whoever said Kovtun's new LP should be a considerable improvement from Beethoven.

That MIGHT have been me. I mean I DID say I was happy for him that he's going to do Muse for his FP. So it could have been me you're referring to. I just remember his FP from the 2014 TEB. I must have watched it at least 6 times. Maybe 10. Because that showed what he's mostly capable of. In fact, I'm going to watch it on YouTube once I finish typing this comment.

Beethoven, while yes is a respectable composer, that mix didn't work for Kovtun. I was not a fan since the CS event in Russia when I saw the livestream. First it was the puffy shirt I didn't like cause it was distracting (Yeah sorry...) but then...yeah....and yes we know his Muse FP from the 2014-2015 is when he became Blue Spiderman, but I didn't mind.

You don't have to be old or have old-fashioned tastes to dislike one particular rock band that is heavily used in skating. I like all kinds of music, including some bands that some might describe in a negative way and whose singers might be described as "screechy," and those people would have the right to their opinion. My problem with Muse is that they are not nearly interesting enough to warrant multiple programs every season. Yes, I didn't mind either of the Butterflies & Hurricanes programs, but the rest of their songs sound absolutely interchangeable to me. And in Max's case, it would behoove him to at least try to stretch himself artistically a bit rather than reverting back to his comfort zone. I thought last season was a step forward for him, but now it's two steps backward.
