2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

The Shibs are in Switzerland right now with Stephane Lambiel. I wonder if he's doing one or both of their competitive programs or if it's for a gala.

Beethoven, while yes is a respectable composer, that mix didn't work for Kovtun.

I think so too. It looked to me as if he was intimidated by the music, and I believe it's not the first time I've seen him perform mostly poorly to a classical piece. Perhaps more modern music makes him feel more comfortable, though that flamenco(?) from 2014-15 was good too...

Absolutely. Especially with his SP in the 2015-2016 season. Perfect.

Nope, they are using some piece from the musical itself. Here's the link to the official site: http://musicalonegin.com/#main There's a lot of vids on youtube, unfortunetely I haven't watched it myself, but I've heard a lot of positive feedback.
Oh cool! You learn something new everyday. I thought there was only an opera...I guess I have some music to listen to now!

People have a right to their tastes, of course. But I am tempted to give these posts a thumbs down, honestly. After all this time I am still surprised how many old-fashioned people there are among figure skating fans. Actually it's more than old-fashioned. I don't even know how to call it. There are people on these forums for whom almost any piano music is "tinkly/tinkling", those for whom almost any violin music is "schreechy", those for who almost all non-classical contemporary instrumental music or a contemporary instrumental cover of any kind of music (classical, contemporary pop songs, anything) is "elevator music", people for whom all vocals that are not crystal clear, soft and pretty are "screeching", "wailing/howling", "sirens" and other unflattering ephitets that are reserved for singer with rougher and/or lower voices than a tenor or soprano. In fact, for many skating fans any music that is not soft and pretty is "schreeching". I am starting to suspect that there are really many old people with extra sensitive ears among skating fans.

I guess I am a bit allergic to standard and narrow (sorry, but this seems true) tastes, and from time to time I just can't keep quiet about this.

To be clear, I am not a Muse fan, although I do like what I've heard of their music in a superficial way, so it's not about that.

This is such a blanket statement that I'm not clear as to what my musical tastes are supposed to be, to be honest?

But, never mind, personally? I'm old fashioned. I enjoy being old fashioned, and I'm old fashioned because I like it. I'm proud of it too. I'm not sure if all my musical tastes are old fashioned, though? But be that as it may, I really take exception to this generalisation, that only people who are "old" are unable to fully appreciate Muse, or that not liking Muse is somehow proof that one is not at the cutting edge of modern music - on the behalf of Layback and Ice Dance. I have no reason to assume that either of them are fellow old fashioned people with myself.

And whilst I suppose I'm no spring chicken, I didn't thin 44 was "old". Well, you are entitled to your opinion, no doubt.:)

And that's all I have to say about that.

Back to Kovtun, however.

I wonder what superhero Kovtun's costume will resemble this time? Honestly, I'd rather he skated to the Spiderman soundtrack, as that is his favourite comic:

Who knows? It might actually even work for him.:)

When you're trying to post but you hit "post" too soon and you can't stop a nonsensical half-written statement from posting...:slink:

Getting back to the topic of this thread...

Carlo Vittorio Palermo posted a clip from The Cricket of his short program to Hometown Glory by Adele, choreographed by David Wilson. A little inspiration from Meagan and Eric perhaps? :)

Edit: As Lys has pointed out, Carlo has retired so this is what he would have skated. My apologies.

By the way, Maxim has just left Buianova and will train with Voronov and Radionova, with Inna K.

I can think of plenty of old-fashioned pieces of music in which I prefer the music without the vocals.

I can also think of plenty of old-fashioned and modern pieces of music which I would find generic without the power of the vocals.

Personally, I prefer Muse without the vocals.

"It'd have been my new short program by David Wilson."
This is not his new sp, but what would have been had he not quitted skating.

Oh thanks for explaining that! I did not check out his FB page and was wondering about the wording. Too bad. It seemed to be a gorgeous program.

Mao's new EX will be a piece by Bach. She won't tell which one yet.

I think this is a brilliant choice and will get them away from the quasi-romantic themes they've attempted. I can see both skaters doing very well with this choice and if Dean is the choreographer there's no telling what new sides we'll see from them.

I agree. This is an AWESOME choice for Chock and Bates. That's one of my favorite songs and a smart break from their last few FDs. I'm looking forward to seeing what they and Christopher Dean do with it.

What is this about? You don't like Queen/Freddie Mercury's singing, Bowie, or just this particular song? Continuing a previous theme, I can understand how this song could be a problem for those to whom Mercury's singing is just more "wailing", like Matthew Bellamy's vocals for some. And, of course, this is not the most genius of Bowie's works/songs. It's only a good pop song, not some "high" art. Others may just find the lyrics a bit banal. So which is it?
