2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Okay. Hawayek/Baker tie things up with their hip hop choice. Hammer Time is fun but at least there's an obvious link between Feeling Good and the Flo Rida song.

So H/D have four cuts of music for a 2:50 SD? Nina Simone to Hammer Time? Whaaattttttt? I thought they were kidding...seriously...:slink::scratch2:

That would be a funny coincidence but I believe Mao has stated that her SP and FS are actually same piece of music and she and Lori collaborated with a pianist in Toronto for it so I'm entirely sure what it will be. Probably a dark beginning and then a dramatic, fiery conclusion

I remember when Daisuke Takahashi "Sonatina for Violin in C-sharp minor" skated first it was totally anonymous music. To add to its mystery after some time it turned out that the composer Mamoru Samuragochi was not the one who could be credited for that composition as the real person behind it was his ghostwriter Takashi Niigaki. Moreover ... before 2014 it was widely believed that Mamoru is deaf but it emerged that he has normal hearing as he was posing that deficiency only. So puzzling  Nevertheless that piece of music is very beautiful, I'd like to see more skaters and choreographers going out of the box in music department.

I'm hopeful Montreal will diversify more this season. The rhythms are less in Marie-France's wheelhouse, which I suspect means more outside choreography. David Wilson is already listed with a couple of D&L's teams. Also Montreal has had more time to adjust to their growing numbers. Paul & Islam, Fournier-Beaudry & Sorenson, and Lauriault & LeGac are all signed up for the Quebec summer competition so we will get a sense early with those three teams.

And Romain Haguenauer choreographed P/I's SD (same as last season) so I expect some range even if the teams are just relying on different in-house choreographers for the segment.

I'm feeling skeptical about H/D's program so far, though. Seems like a lot for a short dance...especially with "Feeling Good" and "Can't Touch This" not really having much connective tissue. Will "Super Freak" be the '80s segue cut?

In a recent interview with TSL, Javier said he will keep "Malagueña" as his SP, but he will do some changes to the choreography with Antonio Najarro. His FS will be an Elvis Medley choreographed by David Wilson.

I love Hubbell & Donohue but why? How many Feeling Good, Sing Sing Sing, Big Spender, Minnie the moocher are we going to have sit through next season :eeking: ?
Plus Hawayek/Baker are skating to Feeling Good too...

Not sold on their "Evolution of Dance" concept either, it has so much potential to end up like their Great Gatsby FD which never quite came together IMO :drama:

I thought the same...Is it too late for Hawayek and Baker to change or is this the challenge to put their own "spin" on this number? They chose different artists but the comparison will dog both all season.

Sometimes a comparison benefits the lesser known team. It didn't do Cappellini & Lanotte any harm with Carmen. The larger question is whether this is just fate that these two teams wound up with the same blues piece, or are we going to wind up with five more? Last year, I was dreading the Masquerade Waltzes. And, sure enough, there were at least six. In the end, however, I don't believe any of them--maybe one--made it to Worlds. Take from that lesson what you will.

I know, I am in a very tiny minority that does not appreciate Freddie and Queen. I love me my American men, but I turned down the music for Adam's FS and Ross's SP; just couldn't take it, didn't want to live forever, didn't want to hear the song.

No! Adam's FS was to the Beatles! Some of the best musical choices this year IMO, especially Blackbird! And wasn't Ross's SP to New York State of Mind? Yes, I'm sure about it. I saw them live at Nationals.

But I agree with you @ WWTLF.... I had no interest in re-watching Adam's or Ross's programs to it.

You are absolutely right, they are reversed, ooops:palmf: I loooved the Beatles FS and NY State of Mind SP.....

And Andrew Torgashev, a junior whom I quite like, is skating his FS to ......Bohemian Rhapsody! :gaah:

Dear Lord, this may be trend....

I was wondering when you were going to notice;). I quite liked Biechler & Dodge's Bohemian Rhapsody by the end of last season, fyi.

Apropos Queen - I suppose no one will ever skate to We are the champions. That could be... interesting. ;)

ETA - But is there any particular reason why no one seems inclined to rock us? Just curious... :)

Ruslena felt inclined to rock us this season, but it backfired...

Mae-Berenice Meite had a good section of her 2013-14 FS to a version of (I think it was non-vocal) "We Will Rock You"!

Thanks cathlen & burntBREAD - Well, that is something - and I do remember Mae-Berenice now you mention it, burntBREAD (I don't watch ice dance). Still, not enough. Especially compared to all those wondering who wants to live forever. (Quoting Marcus Cole in Babylon 5: "Well, I do, actually.") Just not enough people who want to rock us, it seems... (Sighs sadly)

When a piece of music helps keep a National champion dance team off their own national podium, it doesn't endear it to coaches worldwide. (That program was a disaster for Ilinykh & Zhiganshin from the beginning of the GP season). Perhaps if they had not selected it in combo with a waltz . . .:rolleye:

Ironically, it was also used by one of the lower junior dance teams on the JGP. Sorry, I can't remember the name. In any case, it is cut and out there now so we will undoubtedly see it again. Hubbell & Donahue's weak season with The Great Gatsby didn't stop Yanovskaya & Mozgov from using the same three pieces in their FD this season (with even less success).
