2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Bold choice for Mirai. She said it herself and I agree this number has the potential to hit like "Demons" did. If she can skate up to it.

It's also a very David Wilson choice. I'm excited Icenetwork's doing this piece following her and can't wait to hear more about the program! Also really excited that she's working with Jeff Buttle on the short program. I think if she rises to the moment both choreographers will really push her and give her a new level of polish and sophistication.

Has any top US lady worked with Jeff before on a competitive program?

Nice, emotional choice, and I'm very excited for her Jeff Buttle program as well.

Not a big fan of Tom's 'not iconic music so you can't use it' -- that's what suppresses creativity and if other coaches are like this, could be part of the explanation as to why we hear those warhorses all the time...

I do get Tom's perspective though, even if I don't 100% agree. Audiences are more likely to have an emotional reaction to music they're familiar with, and it can help them to better understand the "story" of the program. It takes something very rare to take something obscure like "Lyra Angelica" and make it iconic.

I'll admit, the associations I have with music like Turandot and Romeo and Juliet usually automatically make me enjoy the program better (unless the program is REALLY terrible, of course.)

wow, what a perfect choice for Mirai.
Already feeling this will be an amazing program.
I already imagined 2:06... stopped on the ice, beautiful arm movements and then slowly skates around into a spin
3:05... a crazy long ina bauer across the ice
hopefully... :yahoo:

Honestly, I've never really liked Tom that much. I feel like a lot of his students have plateaued IMNSHO, and I think he could be a bit nicer to his students (e.c. considering Mirai's suggestion instead of just pushing it away).

Not happy about Mirai's choice. I don't like Beatles and Abba programs, cover versions or originals. There were a few Beatles programs that did the music justice and matched the mood and beat, like Gilles/Poirier or Rippon, but haven't seen one for Abba music yet. IMO most of it isn't suited to gliding, stroking, jumping and spinning, and I can't imgine a program that would match the beat of a song like Winner Takes It All. I didn't like Butyrskaya's version, I doubt I'll like Mirai's but we'll see.
On a positive note, still no Phantoms confirmed. That's good news as far as I am concerned.

This version is rather poignant actually. Looking forward to what she does with it.

Yes great choice of music for Mirai - original.... And a really nice version. I hope she can choreographically match it... I probably would have thought Karl Hugo has arranged the piano piece that slots in between...

The rules for the Short Dance require skaters to have a change of rhythm this year, so they have to do hip-hop or swing in addition to the blues.

I know that. I'm suprised so many teams are choosing hip-hop instead of swing as the second rythm.

I guess the skaters can relate more to hip-hop than swing these days. I'm also thinking the choreographers are eager to do something different. Swing has been done many times and it's tough to come up with something new to that rhythm. Hip-hop gives both skaters and choreographers a chance to be a bit creative. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

Hamilton is popular, but I doubt that's why hip hop is suddenly a very popular rhythm. It's probably the SD rhythm that is most relatable for most of the ice dancers as they are of an age where hip hop has dominated music charts for most of their lives.
