I like the 'fake' table more :p I agree that reaching the goals is more important, but sometimes goals are changing during the Olympics  I care about medals, but mostly because I know, that the athletes from Poland who won them, will receive financial reward and support, which isn't very much, but in some cases enable them to keep training. Also winning a medal attracts sponsors, so for many athletes it's a chance to show that they're worthy investing. I know every country has different politics regarding winning medals, so I know it's not the same for every athlete.

I've never watched ending ceremony because it doesn't fit my time zone but I always have serious withdrawals the day after the Games ends .
Me too but it was a little easier for me to accept the end because this Brazilian singer sang the most beautiful song called "nothing lasts forever" while they extinguished the flame. I think even with the doping drama that sweeps the sports and in spite of the drama we create, the heart of the Olympics is a desire to unify the world thru sport and regardless of anyone's political beliefs, cultural values, conflicts etc... no one can erase the human spirit and visual images we are lucky to witness in the games. Even those lacking in sportsmanship can understand this. No matter how ugly the world becomes we'll always have a glimpse of how we can be unified. Even if it's nothing more than a flicker of hope, no one can deny the reality of it actually being possible.

I recorded the closing ceremony, will watch it later today after getting home from work.
How sad is it that I am more interested in the Tokyo2020 presentation part?

It's a beautiful ceremony. Rio did a great job and the people of Brazil should be recognized for their part and their spirit is alive and well throughout entire ceremony. The flame being extinguished is amazing.

Probably the only table I would accept is one in which a. all countries' results are relative to their number of inhabitants, and b. things like winning a gazillion medals in one sport is somehow not any more impressive than winning a medal in a sport where you can only win one.
So totally impossible, then. ;-)

Well, Grenada would win then! That's what I read at least ;)

Clara Hughes, one the Canadian legends winning medals in both summer and winter games... said it very well

One day, someone decided there would be 3 medals.... It could have been 10.... it could have been only 1. What matters is your performance.

I think that came out after the 3 4th place finishes in track for canada.... really, Melissa Bishop and Ahmed and the relay all had AMAZING races. They should all have been on the podium, but they aren't... maybe they'll get there in ten years when samples are retested LOL>.. (JK)

but for now, even there's no medals, considering the quality of those performances, they should be so proud.

Hungary and Denmark both finished with 15 medals. But, because Hungary won 8 Gold medals and Denmark won 2 Gold medals, the Hungarians got the nod for 18th position. On the other hand, the Danes will be happier than the Hungarians, because Hungary had dropped 6 places compared to the Gold rankings, whereas Denmark had climbed 9 places compared to the Gold rankings!

No. ;) We are happier becuse we know we have 8 golds and because the official rank is the number of golds.

i like both tables :) the number of medals take into account the excellence of a country in sports like track, swimming, gymnastics where athletes can win multiple medals... while the gold medal ranking is clear about being the champion :) which especially for team sports is very meaningful and only gets 1 medal per country...

i think the total medal table can also speak about well-rounded countries who are contenders in many events but not necessarily favourites... for instance all those bronze won by canada :)

I can appreciate both tables.

Who did better or which country would be happier in this scenario: The country that won only 1 Gold medal? or the country that won 10 bronze medals?

personally, i'd prefer the 10 bronze....if you are following the athletes of your country, it's nicer to see them more often on the podium, even if they ddin't win than just once.... that's what i think... gold is great.... you get to hear the anthem etc... but many athletes performing well can be just as thrilling...

Thank you all for this great coverage! :agree:
IMO, It's been so funny that we had the opportunity to talk about something completely different from FS (in a period poor in skating).

Rio has been amazing. Now I understand Brazilians who feel the saudade about their country. I already miss it!!

I'm a little sad that the Olympics ended but I'm happy to read those kind words about our people and country. :luv17:
And don't forget that we still have the Paralympics game! Let's cheer for those amazing athletes! :hap10::hap57::hap10:

I thought the Games turned out great and Brazil has a lot to be proud of. Our TV was doing a lot of extra features too about the food, music, and other cultural stuff. I really enjoyed it.

Rio is the most beautiful Olympic city I have ever seen. The landscape, the nature, everything is breathtaking!
I already knew Brazilians are emotional, full of joy for life, music, for everything that gives you vibes... and maybe sometimes this turns out to be a little too much. But I felt it, even through my TV.
And I hope one day to have the chance to get there :)

Probably you don't know Budapest is one of the candidate cities bidding to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_bid_for_the_2024_Summer_Olympics worth to read it.

I adore and I hate it at the same time. We have chance and you can be sure we will be ready. We can organize, we adore the OGs, we adore the sports!

What reasons support Budapest?
-Olympic Games have never been in this part of Europe
- Budapest is a medium-sized city , cca 2 millions people.
- we can organize that will be a well-organized OG!
- Budapest is a really beautiful city https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ynGpsRtNHw awesome video!
- Hungary is a little country, other cities can help Budapest to hold qualifying competitions in football, and some other sports. Debrecen( the city of Junior WCh in this year), Győr, Szeged, Miskolc these are maximum 2 hours from Budapest on highways.
- Balaton is a very nice lake perfect to hold sailing competitions, and long distance swimming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD8cbccg0e0

Why I don't like the idea:

-We are not a rich country, there are very backward, very poor areas in Hungary. All development will be carried out there, every penny will spend for the Olympic preparations. That will be tragic for the poor areas.
- Will be great corruption.

Russia is banned from the Paralympic Games in Rio...

I don't have words. They let Russian sportsmen (some of them with doping past) take part in competition and then ban disabled people without any doping past????????? How on Earth can this happen? :palmf:

The ceremonies were great and it was a pleasure to see our french team dancing and smiling. But, but, but… Sorry, I have a very mixed feeling with these games.

I begin with the negative: (As I’m French, I would probably not be the most objective :scratch2:)
I can’t forget the “scandal” with Lavillenie and everything that followed. Lavillenie is impulsive and already made bad gestures against a competitor (not without reasons). But here, I find that there has been a media frenzy. Yes, his sentence was stupid but if we read well, he never said that the public is Nazi. He cited 1936 in order to say that the whistles are very rare (and historically it’s not true, 1936 isn’t the correct date). His sentence was awkward and he apologized.
Some people think he’s a sore loser. I think he’s a winner, like Florent Manaudou could be. It’s the first rank or “nothing” and when it’s “nothing”, he can react badly. And I’m not shocked that he doesn’t want to be friend with some of these opponents. I don’t see disrespect; it is more a kind of fear.
When he says that it was a ****** public, I think that he was right for a part, not all. Even if to say “s***y” is hard and impolite. I had for the Brazilian the image of people who like having fun. But before this story, it was already painful to listen to the whistles. So, when he said it on tv, I think that a lot of French viewers were agree with him to complain about a part of the public.
Commentators tried to talk about Brazilian culture, Rai (ex-footballer) explained that the Brazilian know only a few sports and that it was their way of being (boos). Sociologists said that EU shouldn’t try to impose their culture in Brazil. I don’t think like them.
- For me, first, it wasn’t to try to impose a culture because it’s a global way to be in athletics. Ask to Bolt, who said he was shocked by whistles on Gatlin and added he had never seen it.
- Second, before sportsmen, they are humans and the doped athletes (I talk about the whistles against Russian) are the first victims of a system.
- Third, the public forget that even if they are top athletes, an error is always possible and can even be dangerous, for example during the pole vault. That’s why they need to concentrate
- Fourth, the sportsmen worked 4 years for that and they deserve to have more respect for the work they did even if they aren't born in the host country.
There had the problem with the Brazilian public, but now, in France, the controversy continues because Teddy Riner, flag carrier, said understanding the Brazilians. So, Teddy Riner has to justify why he’s not supporting Lavillenie. He explained he had nothing against him and that his comments were misunderstood

So, even if there was this not finished story, I have some great moments with the sportsmen:
I must thank Thiago Braz for his fair-play on the podium. Brazil is his country; he had the right to do nothing and asked to applaud :agree:
It was a pleasure to see Christophe Lemaitre won the bronze medal and acted like he won the gold. He looked like a child
I liked the French boxers who fought for Alexis Vastine, died in 2015 in a helicopter crash. They showed a friendship forgotten by the swimmers.
Sam and Flora De Mariposa are so beautiful ♥
I don’t know if we can say there were brave or stupid but congratulations to Diniz and Besson ! The first was unwell and wanted to finish the race, the other has done all regattas with a herniated disc
The most unpleasant moment (after my first part) : Benoit Paire. The Olympics aren’t holidays. His image (his and the image of his girlfriend) is not going to improve. Money, money, money…
If I could change a rule, I will change the starts in athletics. An immediate elimination is so hard, I want the return of the old system with a chance and then a red if there’s 2 false starts :reye:

At the end, it was some emotional games and the important when we’re watching sport is the emotions, no ? Good or not. Even if I found a big negative point, I want to see the races again, smile and cry with these athletes. I found the desire to see some of the sports that I had not seen for years.
