2016 World Championships Ladies SP

This has been an amazing short program competition. Beautiful programs like Radionova, Mao or Zijun Li are far away from the podium (ok, Radionova not so much but still). I think Medvedeva is massively overscored, both Radionova and Anna were better than her today.
I am really happy for Anna - she has been struggling with awful programs this season, and she just nailed it at the most important competition of the seasons. No one has thought that she will be the top Russian lady after the SP. Well done!
Mirai, Ashley and Grace were all sensational, I can't even imagine the pressure they are under, and they all did a great job!
I preferred Gracie to Ashley today, but I still have to rewatch the programs and analyze the protocols.

It was a fantastic competition with tons of perfect or near perfect programs, can't wait for the long program.

What amazing skating we've seen today, the whole arena was electric, I could sense it from my computer. Stunning skating.
I am in shock that Gracie is on top. I would never have guessed that.
I think this may work for Ashley though, she will have her fire on in the LP and she loves her LP and although I don't love the music it works for her and it is perfect for her.
We have a US woman at the top after the SP, is this the first time since Sasha in 2006?

Nope. Mirai got first after the SP in 2010.

Very correct scoring here no major anomalies. PCS are inflated but consistent across the season. However the message is clear: Unless Gracie and Ashley wipe the floor in the LP, an American lady will be the World champion this year. And this will be the first one in 10 years. I can't believe the last World champion from US was Kimmie Meissner. LOL. I am not even sure who I prefer more Ashley or Gracie.

I think they still need to skate clean. 3 point lead isn't that unbeatable.

If that wasnt a blatant attempt to keep the hosts happy, I don't know what is.

Gold in first, by that much? Seriously? I can see her being in the mix, but up by 3 points????

And satoko being that low? Whatever downgrades she may have gotten for jumps should not bring down her amazing performance of a great program... those components shocked me...

Anna was fantastic, but you could see the crowd already leaving... I was not impressed.

But, it ain't over yet.

I would riot if that SP of Gracie broke WR. She was hesitant going into the jumps.... but the most annoying part was those plastic kodak smiles after she landed those jumps. :rolleye::laugh:

Ok I wasn't actually angry when I saw Mao's score but when I check the protocol in details I could have summoned Satan and asked him to bring the judges to hell . 7.75 for Skating Skills? 7.50 for Transitions? Maybe I can agree on a 7.50 for performance but no 9 for choreo? only 8s for Interpretation?

What a joke IJS is

Btw, I love how the US ladies haters are coming out in full force.

When the US ladies mess up, it's all "oh these girls have no mental game, this is why skater x and skater y are so much better because they are real competitors."

When the US ladies skate clean and earn high scores, it's all "these girls can't skate or perform, they're being overscored."

Btw, I'm not convinced that Ashley or Gracie will deliver in the LP. They're inconsistent and I've accepted that. Doesn't mean these ladies didn't put on a hell of a short program.

I've accepted overscoring as a phenomenon we as skating fans have to accept. Russian ladies or US ladies....doesn't matter. Sometimes it'll hurt my faves and other times it'll help them.

Yeah but it really isn't how things shake out, now is it? I mean I do have a decent memory and omg the screaming when it's certain countries and yet it's yay when it's certain other countries. In principle, I am against all overscoring.

But if we are going to say ok it's normal for home advantage, then all right. And that needs to hold for literally every single country. We play it that way? Deal. So nobody here is going to moan once we leave North America as we are about to. Good to know.

Personally, my problem isn't that there's now overscoring in the USA. It's that suddenly oh hey - overscoring is fine.

So overscoring is fine when it is the US ladies that are being overscored, but not fine when it's the Russians. Ok. So next time the Russians or Japanese get overscored I do believe we should expect everyone to shut up. It's either for everyone or no-one. So we should just all remember this moment and that's it.

I'm okay with this, hoping that americans will accept this too when other skaters from other countries will be overscored. It happens.

Alas, I was only able to watch the last group, but what a group it was!!! :eeking:  I mean, someone is probably gonna splat in the FS, but still, I don't think I've seen a Ladies' competition this good since Sochi

The only thing I'm a little sad about is that Rika is not in the final group, but I'm not sure who I'd have to kick out to get her in

Since I'm complaining about Gracie I still get to harp on everyone else right :P

Tbh people aren't as harsh today bc Gracie has been competing longer and "built up" to this moment. The Russian babies tend to get their crazy scores prematurely and that can be more shocking/grating.

Can someone tell me if Gracie's solo jump was a planned lutz or a flip ? Because her leading up looked like she was going for a flip but her take off was very much a lutz so I'm confused ^^"

I couldn't see the whole competition but I was surprised to see Satoko ending up so low on the ranking Oo Rika was great and Anna pogorilaya was AMZING ! she has so much charisma and her step sequence was on fire!

So skating order for final six just came out (for Free Skate):

19 Elena Radionova
20 Evgenia Medvedeva
21 Satoko Miyahara
22 Anna Pogorilaya
23 Gracie Gold
24 Ashley Wagner

So the three historical headcases go last...will need lots of wine for this one

Bloody hell! That was really unexpected. But it also keeps everything really exciting. It's all or nothing in the FS. Can't wait!
Elizabet is well and truly Team Orser. There's more to come in future.
