2016 World Championships Ladies SP

I wonder if Gracie being 1st after the SP will turn out to be good or bad for her? There's pressure to hold onto that lead...

It could be tricky. I really like Ashley's position because she is probably mad about missing out on a small medal and will be motivated to do her best to come from behind. Plus Ashley skates last so she can get the highest PCS scores potentially.

After watching everyone, I have to say…I don't completely agree with the way this was scored. I would have had:
1. Ashley (she had the best maturity and equal quality in technical tonight to anna and gracie imo, components should be higher than Gracie)
2. Gracie (just simply didn't have the presentation until after the jumps were done, flip probably should have been e)
3. Anna (BEST RUSSIAN LADY!!! She is by far the most mature, fiery russian lady competing here. she just needs to improve her spins and extension)
4. Evgenia (the flip was…not great, I don't see how she beat Ashley technically…slower than the other three, but second half bonus helps her)
5. Satoko (No, her jumps SHOULD NOT get the highest GOE, but tbh, her components should be equivalent to Evgenia's…her use of music and how she flows across the ice surprisingly quickly for someone of her stature should translate into higher component marks, especially with someone like Elena being compared to her)
6. Elena (judges can't reward her for her hunched shoulders and arm flailing when you have skaters like Ashley, Anna, Satoko and Mao competing against her…and tbh her jumps are not as high or fluid as Gracie's or Anna's are, so she doesn't really have an edge there either)
7. Rika
8. Gabby
9. Mao (SHE SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BE GIVEN LOWER PCS THAN GRACIE/ANNA/MEDVEDEVA/ELENA!!! NO JUST NO! Her score is fine, just don't give skaters without her maturity, presence and skating skills higher components)
10. Mirai
11. Zijun etc.

Ok end of rant…hope no one hates me for this! Anyway, scoring aside, this was a great short program! There were so many clean/close to clean skates, and a lot of skaters rose to the occasion really well imo. I'm excited for the free on saturday (and hope for better judging) but mostly i'm hoping to have a long program competition at as high a quality as the short was today. Merde Everyone! :cheer:

Evgenia Medvedeva

There is so much to like about this lovely skater who is my pick to win the event. She is fast as can be and light and lovely to watch. Today however, was not her day. I love her choice of music but she also was far less "Lifted" in her delivery today. Lots of focus on the ice instead of her usual delivery to judges and the audience. This was actually the first time I had Anna ahead of Med. Looking for her to be strong in the Free Skate but, it will be tough for her to overtake Gracie as Gracie is usually stronger in the free. Best of luck to everyone and thank you for a great afternoon of skating.

Hey there mmrice :) I just saw her sp program. I do not like her music. I thought she skated very slow, and lacks deep edges and flow. All her jumps and step sequence look very strained. She lacks that leg strength/power to skate fast and create deep edges. I have no idea how she scored that high today because more and more now her skating looks very strained. I thought Anna P. did way better than her and didn't think she should have even placed ahead of Ashley, who gave a fantastic performance. I think a lot of other girls, such as Zijun Li should have been placed ahead of Evgenia as well. There is just no power or flow to her skating at all. Am I the only one seeing this? Probably, lol :)

Also, as a special post.
Mao <3 <3 <3
Whatever, not her technical best maybe, but still compared to everybody else in top groups... Like dunno, she was the one deserving the 35 pcs there

HOLY CRAP WHAT A NIGHT!!!!!!

Today's highlight for me goes to Anna. I was afraid she was going to have a terrible skate due to her skating last, but WHAT A SKATE From her. Her 3-3 combo was GORGEOUS, her dress was gorgeous, her program was gorgeous, and the only thing I don't understand is how she's below Gracie. I think I may found my new favorite.....

Evegenia......honestly,73.67 makes sense for her, not because of her skate, but because she backloaded her jumps. She really isn't 75+ skater IMO. But still a lovely skate from her.

Both Gracie and Ashley skated well, but nothing really stood out to me, and their program worked well due to American audience.

I love Mirai. I felt she was a bit underscored here, but I'm just so happy to see her skate at worlds, and that alone satisfies me as her fan.

Mao: Although I'm not a fan of her, she really has the best PCS out of all the ladies here. She should've gotten at least 35 in her PCS, but I have a feeling her being in group 5 may have had an impact. It's also sad to see how she's not #1 lady in Japan anymore....Rika and Satoko both are rising and earning more points than her, but I believe Mao can deliver

So Youn........:( I keep wishing for her to do well, but it's getting to a point where I get frustrated watching her skate. I still love her, and I'll keep watch her grow, but I may have to lower my expectations from her.

Zijun, as always, she's such a lovely skater. She's so graceful on the ice.

All I can say is that today was not Med's day. You're definitely right when you say that Anna was the better skater today. In fact, Anna was very close to being the BEST skater today. Gracie was on fire like I've never seen her and she deserves her place at the top. I still think Anna should be a little closer to her but, that's my opinion. I think nerves finally got to Med this afternoon but, I really look for her to come back strong in the free program.

Here's Meds problem. She's going to need Gracie and Anna to make mistakes in order for her to win. If they all skate great ( which I hope ) I think the title goes to Gracie with Anna silver and a toss up for the bronze.

I always thought Anna was not as good as the other Russians because she was always scored lower PCS wise.

But boy, my opinions changed after watching the SP live today. I was never that interested in Anna, but guess what? Anna has earned a new fan. Hehe

It's interesting that Europeans and Japanese audiences are not criticized for cheering the loudest for their skaters but the Americans are. I think the audience has been fine. They've politely applauded and even cheered loudly for non-American skaters programs which they liked. And even got angry at the scores for that male Malaysian(?) skater. I forget his name. Every country is different. And with audiences in FS, they shouldn't be accused of being disrespectful and rude just because they don't loudly cheer the same way as the Japanese and (apparently) some European audiences do. Now, I'm off to continue to watch the Free Dance.

Basically, Japanese and European audiences may cheer more for their skaters, but they show genuine enthusiasm about all skaters. Did you watch Europeans this year, for example? When people would clap not only for jumps, for example, but for interesting elements and stuff. Also, they usually don't sit on first row holding their country banners while skaters from other countries are skating (check Pogo's skate) and, while sitting on first rows at least, dont look obviously bored and keep chatting and staring away from the rink (again, from Pogo's skate, sorry, i got a bit butthurt for Pogo - compare audience's reaction to her skate with nonstop clapping for american skaters).

But anyways, Japanese and European audiences seem to be just way more friendly to everybody and more interesting in figure skating itself rather than seeing their country win. And as americans complain tons about russian audience, now its payback time - american audience is not so great either =P

My two cents:
I think Gracie leading is fine. I have always just found her skating easy to watch. Her arm movements, of course, are a different story, but in general I think she creates intensity and beauty through her skating skills, which is not always as noticeable as someone like Ashley's more dramatic and flashy style. I interpret what comes off as expressionless to many as intense. Remember when she was an "ice princess" and could never wipe that sappy smile off her face? You can tell she's trying to find a more mature persona, which I think she's doing. I do really appreciate Anna's dramatic movements and fire, but sometimes it just looks a little labored. But overall, so happy for the ladies today! What a great event.

Well, my opinion is based on the entire competition thus far and not just Pogo's skate, and I think the audience was fine and has shown appreciation for all skaters. You are entitled to your opinion though.

What a wonderful competition for the ladies! Pogorilaya was the highlight and I am glad the judges rewarded her with deservedly high TES and PCS. Medvedeva was not that exciting to me, surprisingly, but still a good performance. I agree that Gracie was overscored. She should be in line with Wagner and Pogorilaya.

For the free skate, I predict the judges will be relatively modest in their scores for Radionova and Medvedeva, since both Wagner and Gold are skating after them. It should be very interesting.

AS of now, I think Anna is the best of the russian ladies....but just not consistent. I hope she brings it in the lp too, because I think she is a much better skater than Evgenia or Elena. Gracie....I am always on the fence with her. I thought she did a very good job today and deserved her marks, give her credit. But there is something still lacking in her performance for me, although today she smiled throughout her program at least, lol :) I liked Evgenia's skating when she first came onto the junior ranks. But every time I watch her perform now, she's lacking that speed/flow/deep edges more and more. Even her jumps look tiring. It's almost like I want to go out there on the ice and help push her around. Absolutely no flow in her step sequence. But she does have lovely upper body movement. I don't know if she will improve with Eteri.

I always thought she's better than Evgenia or Anna when she's on....her jumps are huge and she skates very maturely compared to her russian peers. And she has longer limbs, gets more ice coverage, like Yuna Kim

Just giving examples from Pogo skate as it was the last and the most blatant one, with people leaving even before she got her score.
The whole ladies was pretty much like that, not just her skate =)

Yey for Anna!!!!! Represent the written offs and the underdogs girl!

Heartbroken for Mao. I was hoping for sp momentum heading into the free....sad...Well medal or not, I hope she leaves us with her best Free. That's more than enough.

Happy for Ashley, my fave of the Americans.

Good for Gracie putting out a good short after all the flack she has gotten. Her longs are always higher scored than her shorts so she has a good chance of medaling. Maybe even the Gold. But than of course there will always be the neigh Sayers that claim she was over scored. Go Gracie!!!!

Mirai lost like 5 points for that underroated 3t.
She would have been in the top mix. Such a shame because it's harder for her compare to the other girls in terms of rotating the jumps. :,(
