2017-2018 Programs by Discipline

it probably is... either from France of Montreal... i feel like going to Gadbois tomorrow and telling them.... mais qu'avez-vous fait???? I am not sure Hugo can survive this so maybe you shouldn't tell him about it...
I'm not going to tell him. But he's really proud of Papadaki and Cizeron, so he's going to hear for himself eventually

Oh, by the way, I showed Hugo the movie AUTUMN SONATA last night! The Chopin preludes made me think of you!

The music cuts are perfectly fine but I am disappointed with the program. The choreography doesn't reflect the fast and intense sections of the music well enough and there is a faux-dramatic quality to the program as a whole.

Don't know Moonlight Sonata well enough to comment on the music cuts, but I really noticed the disconnect between choreo and music in the fast sections. They were slow and flowing in their movements throughout, and while that can be lovely, it doesn't work when the music gets fast and intense.

Obviously I'll wait to see the program grow - I didn't really like their FD last season until Worlds, but it was beautiful by the end of the season - but I do hope they up the intensity to respond to the music.

i love chopin preludes ;) i haven't seen this movie in a long time... i shall watch it after the olympic season LOL... i caught myself watching nebelhorn and jgp croatia at the same time this week... intense.... but fun, especially watching new dance programs at nebelhorn... it was crazy tight..

Laurine came on the French Masters during the last zamboni break of the Nebelhorn Ladies FS! That was good timing! But she kept falling! And she lost to Maé Bérénice! She's gonna give me a heart attack. Since Europeans she's been falling so much [emoji43][emoji43][emoji43][emoji43]

Sorry, what does that mean, "what she was skating on"? [emoji23]
I learned a lot this week, but I don't understand the question.
I know she was knife-bootin' on ice and she was splashing into a carrot soup.

what music LOL
Short program is "Shining Silver Skies" by Ashram in a weird/hideous/fascinating brown dress with one pant leg. I miss last year's SP so much. Hard to say good bye to that one.

Free skate is "Bye Bye Baby" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" by Marilyn Monroe in full white dress Monroe get-up

And also she is now coached by lady who coaches Jason Brown

Kori Ade. Did Rohene do the choreography?

well the music cuts are not fine and i can elaborate on this :

1) in the slow initial section, there is an instance of repeating a music phrase which destroys the balance and harmonic progression of the music...

I could live with that faux-pas but then it gets worse

2) in the fast section : they have removed many bars of the music so the flurry of 16th notes if they may look seamless to someone who doesn't understand music deeply, no longer carry any significance and meaning... we are left with beats and notes that do not connect to one another in a meaningful way. this happens several times in the fast section...

now I agree with you with the faux-dramatic quality of the program as in the fast section, they do a stationary lift and a spin.... both with slow revolutions... it's unfortunate that there are no real uses of the fast sections for fast twizzles or steps...

3) the return to the original slow section may be fine for a casual listener of music but is quite offensive for someone versed in classical music... the moonlight sonata is well-known for its progression into a passionate climax... the return to the slow and soft section ruins the intense build-up meant by the composer...

Fair enough, choreographers and skaters may be able to create arrangements that suit their needs but this is a butchery of a gorgeous musical piece....

one can use this music quite well.. .it's been done before but this time, the cuts are failing the music... and if some skating fans may not care, some skating fans like myself, and we are many, are trained musicians and love the sport because of its use of music... and in this case... it's a big failure.
You are so right! I get P/C wanna make the music suit their style, but to butch a classic piece like this is too much. Maybe for a casual viewer it's not that obvious so P/C thought they can get away with it? I don't know.

Yes. I think given the time limits, the music cuts don’t sound too bad but the choreography doesn’t work well in the transitional session. They have time to fix it though.

Yes!! I think the choreography suits the very famous first theme of the first movement. It is less successful at translating the despair of the second theme of the first movement. They lose me at the third movement. I see none of the darkness, storminess, or weightless of the Presto.

It therefore feels like a shallow interpretation of the music that is pretending to be deep with some overwrought faces in the second half. The Build a Home music from 2016 was much more suited to their choreography and style.

Thank you so much for this analysis! I think a contemporary piece would highlight their uniqueness much better. There's a reflex of defending their choices as "art," instead of pushing them to improve like every other team.

instead of pushing them to improve like every other team. Really? They have been twiddling their thumbs and just lived off of their previous success? Please!!! Re-watch their progression from late junior-days to today and tell me nothing happened.

I think you took my argument and ran with it to a place I never intended. The discussion is about refining one specific program. I never made the straw man argument that P/C have not improved in all their years of skating. That's absurd on its face.

Trained musicians who happen to be fans of figure skating should get that, the chosen music is just vehicle to represent the choreography, not the other way around. They’re more like background music in all cases. If we nitpick about music cuts, it would be like we complain to people who use copies of Van Gogh paintings as wallpaper on their wall. The usage purposes are completely different.
