2017 GP Skate Canada Ladies SP

few little cents

standing ovation for Courtney - you brought it, girl! There is a sense of sophistication and refinement in her already, love kind of powerful outlook of her skating in general. She can interpret music well, with nice lines and decent edge work. The program is very nice and actually complimentary to her expression, way of movement - she showed today that when she's on, it's very effective. I love step sequence with the twizzle. Kudos for being her best self today and so impressive. It's not maybe 'wow' stuff, but a very classy and elegant stuff which always will find its audience.

Anna - I am glad that this was a clean routine, because it could go haywire if her foot would catch boards after -3T combo jump...This for me kind of proves that she's a fighter and this program could go places along with her - some upgrade in tech is needed (spins and steps especially), but I understand she's after injury/still with back pain; then to throw more Spanish accents, some choreo sparkle here and there - with fierce face it could be amazing vehicle and experience for people to see. I could see she was nervous, probably to get herself started this season for real and to start it in different way she finished the last one. For me, she succeeded - I hope this will get some amount of burden out of her back.

Kaetlyn was stellar, this program - the wholesome of performance - gives kind of cinematic experience: so lively, dynamic, with natural performing instead of forced acting. She lives and breathes with that music, this French aura of elegance and chic. She connects with the music, fills up the costume, the stage AND understands how powerful the performance should be, how to acommodate her umps and speed to make it work the magic. I love the easiness, effortless strenght she's moved with, all gestures, simple, yet effective expression - flirting with the audience, but leaving the work of charming to the whole performance created.

Especially after this disaster of an event. Kaetlyn skated with an air of confidence that was in sharp contrast with the rest of the field.

This often happens when an event has been skated this badly. I imagine the judges were so excited to see a skater bring the entire package that they gave her the score they were wisely holding back. Frankly, the preceding performances didn't warrant anyone outside of Pogo being close to her.

BTW, I am pleasantly surprised to see Courtney Hicks in 4th and leading all the US Ladies. I feel like the USFSA gave her a raw deal and I'm glad to see her making the most of this opportunity.

Definitely concur there. She didn't have the same spark. It's like she's fighting to not bomb, like she has before, instead of performing through the movements. Maybe it's just a matter of confidence-building across the season.

Agreed. Felt so slow. Last year she felt so smooth and natural during her skate, especially in the short. Now, it's like seeing Anna from her bombing years, except, she's not making errors, but is exceptionally timid. :/

I am cheering those < on the protocols. Because they were CORRECT calls.

I'm sick to death of "benefit of the doubt." Don't want an under-rotation call? Then don't leave any doubt.

They overlooked Courtney's UR on her 3loop combo but apart from that I applaud the tech team for all those UR (which absolutely were deserved) and not giving top skaters the 'benefit of the doubt' while being overly strict with less known skaters! Great job! PCS were reasonable too! There was not a single 10 for Osmond, not even from the Canadian judge! And juniorish skating with high Tech didn't automatically resulted in high PCS!

This is the impression I had as well. I know she's working off an injury, as well as last season's disaster, so I hope to see her fire come back over the course of the season. I wanna see my girl on the Olympic team!

I'm not talking about Osmond. I'm talking about the bland, error-ridden, interpretationless programs from Chartrand and Austman being way too freaking close to Kailani's brilliance.

Oh please. The canadian ladies all got the scores they deserved. The bad performances were duly penalized and the great one rewarded. I am pretty sure Craine is happy with her performance and score there and more importantly happy to compete at her first grand prix.

Geez, that Australian judge, Ms. Alison Ryan... Judge No. 6 on the protocols. I mean... wow, is she going through a divorce or something? Yeah, high 5's in PCS for Karin Honda and Courtney Hicks? And then a 4.75 for Alaine Chartrand?!?!

Kaetlyn was underscored imo. I was thinking 79 for her SP. She should be in the conversation for Gold in Korea.
It would be nice to have some competition in the Ladies for the top spot at the Olympics.

Very happy for Anna she seems to have silenced her demons. Nice big smile in the K&C from her was nice to see.

Not sold on Maria yet. She has very good technique but for me she still skates like a junior and has limited range right now.
She is young and has talent so I am sure she will develop nicely.

Highlights for me were Kaetlyn, Rika, Anna and Courtney.

URs allllll over the place. The technical panel appears to be on top of their game, both here and at Rostelecom.

Not really? They were very strict with levels, but they were actually lenient on jump calls (for most skaters). Annas 3-3 was UR (no matter how much I love her), Ashleys 3T wasn't < but <<, Rikas 3Lz was a 3Flz<, Kaetlyns 3Lz was a 3Flz,... there were simply a lot of technical problems today.

And before I'm a hater now because I call Kaetlyns flutz a flutz - she was great otherwise and deserves a clear lead. And as much as I love Anna, and Masha does nothing for me, Masha should have been 2nd, IMO. But oh well.

Am I the only one who was really underwhelmed by Honda here? What happened to her?

Super underwhelmed here and I'm suffering from what @andromache has called Hondamania in the past. :drama:

I was so looking forward to her here but this was such a disappointment. Unsure why she switched to a 3Lz+3T at such an important competition... her lutz has never been strong and she usually only did 1 per competition (once in the free). She does have a tendency to pop her jumps when she loses focus though and that's what happened here too. Meh.

Can anyone point out where the choreography in Kaetlyn's SP was changed from last season?

I still find it less unacceptable than Hanyu doing the SP for the third time in the past 4 years, change of choreography or not. Love him but I wish he'd gone for an SP change. :slink:
