2017 World Ladies FS

Have we ever seen such movement on the ladies podium in an Olympic cycle like we have seen in the last 3 years? Only Med has repeated as a medalist while everyone else has been one and done so far. It seems like no one is consistent now to stay on the podium for more then one year. Usually heading into the Olympics the skaters are narrowed down to just a few for the podium but there are literally about a dozen ladies who can get on the podium in 2018.

2007-2010 World medalists
Yuna Kim (4 07/08/09/10 - 3rd/3rd/1st/2nd)
Mao Asada (3 07/08/10 - 2nd/1st/1st)
Miki Ando (2 07/09 -1st/3rd)
Joannie Rochette (1-09-2nd)
Carolina Kostner ( 1-08-2nd)
Laura Lepisto (1-10-3rd)

2011-2014 World medalists
Carolina Kostner (4- 11/12/13/14- 3rd/1st/2nd/3rd)
Yuna Kim (2 11/13 - 1st/2nd)
Mao Asada (1 13- 3rd; 14 -3rd)
Miki Ando (1 11 - 1st)
Alena Leonova (1 12-2nd)
Yulia Lipinitskaya (1-14-2nd)
Akiko Suzuki (1 12-3rd)

Compared to:
Evgenia Medvedeva (2 -16/17 -1st/1st)
Elizaveta Tuktmysheva (1 -15 - 1st)
Kaetlyn Osmond (1-17-2nd)
Ashley Wagner (1-16-2nd)
Satoko Miyahara (1-15-2nd)
Gabrielle Daleman (1-17-3rd)
Anna Pogrilaya (1-16-3rd)
Elena Radionova (1-15-3rd)

So yeah, with a few notable exceptions, there always been a lot of movement in the ladies.

:cheer: 3 spots for US :cheer:

My shoutout for this competition goes to Dabin. Clean short AND long  She's been so consistent the past couple competitions and delivered when it mattered the most. It's nice to see that she's improving on her components, congratulations for 2 spots :)

Lol. In term of real presence, Rika is on a different level compare to Mai and Wakaba. Rika is engaging. The other two are cookie cutter skater and one of them is inconsistent as hell.

Wakaba can sometime jump. Wouldn't go that far to say she's talented. She's just a C level skater in the grand scheme of thing.

If she's consistent, then she is another Mai. I can handle a few mai tai, not a few mai.

Sounds like you've had quite a few mai tais.

I woke up and first thing I did was to check out how Karen did.

Sorry if this has already been said, I haven't read any posts yet...

All of you who whined excessively and who questioned if US could win 3 spots... and all of you who doubted Karen... IN YOUR FACE!

I just have to say, the lack of compassion for Anna here is revolting. I know certain posters on here are renowned for their stank attitudes and shamelessly unapologetically lack of common decency, but tearing a skater down is appalling.

Especially trying to trivialize a skater who got a personal best in both the SP and the FS this season, was a Euro silver medalist, won two Grand Prix events 3rd at the GPF, and was even thought to potentially challenge Med, who had a bad day and calling it the end of her, an embarrassment, or deserves deductions for breaking down after on the ice or whatever... is repulsive.

Shame on YOU. Not on her. :rolleye:

If Dave Lease in the TSL worlds recap says something disgusting about Anna's performance today and turns it all into a huge laugh-filled joke, I will seriously lose my crap. :ddevil:

(Dang swear word filter)

You are absolutely wright! My first shock expressed in a previous message was by the huge PCS for both Carolina and Ashley. You can't get big PCS when steps and spins + excellence in jumps is not there. Judges should pay for things like this. I want to mention that neither Ashley nor Caro are guilty, but the judges!

Here are some rotten cabbages and tomatoes that I bought from Mr Amano's vegetable stall in rural Japan.

Anna's skate disheartened me so much I couldn't really enjoy the ladies event. She's my favorite in this event since Satoko withdrew.
I'm really happy that Mai had that perfect moment in the FS though. She climbed the ranks all the way to 5th. Well done!
But Anna.....
She's come back before. She'll do it again.

TAT mentioned that ISU is considering implementing some new "Medvedeva" rules ( removing the second-half bonus and allowing/rewarding more 3-3-3s) soon.

Also they speculated that Evgenia will be introducing new combos next season.

This is mighty interesting. What is rewarding more 3-3-3s? Are they allowing the girls to repeat 3 jumps instead of 2?

Medvedeva: It's boring to watch her skate because the outcome (both the success of her jumps and a stratospheric score) seems predetermined. However, it's hard to deny that she is one of the greatest competitors and female athletes this sport has ever seen. Where was the 3-3-3 though!?
Osmond: She is being set up to challenge for Olympic gold next year. I would have had her slighly ahead of Med in the short, and if she gets a better long program and keeps it together anything could happen in Korea. The judges love her and I can't blame them.
Daleman: There is something so unrefined and down to earth about her skating. I think she could have been a power gymnast in another life. Her long program was the perfect vehicle for her this season.
Chen: Wow. People wanted this girl off the World team, she gets injured two weeks ago, her practices were reportedly horrible all week, and she comes out at finishes fourth?! The gods were smiling on USFSA (and Gracie and Mirai).
Wagner: It wasn't her year. She should be commended for fighting through and not completely bombing. Still one of my favorites--under rotations, slow skating, wonky spins and all :)
Kostner: Love the grace and maturity of this lady, and it puts a smile on my face as a long time skating fan to see her out there. Did not like the long program and would have had her behind Wagner.
Pogorilaya: Johnny Weir was in fine form during her disaster of a performance, and I don't blame him for his harsh comments. There really was no reason for her to stay on the ice for so long after her program. Is it possible to get a further deduction in Performance/Execution for theatrics after the performance is over? Good grief.

They did give Yuzuru a one point deduction for being to slow to get on ice with opening pose but there's no rule to deduct one point for slow in getting OUT of ice.

I kinda predicted Gabby would be on the podium :slink: But it was only because I'd seen her live a week ago and knew she was ready to kick butt.

I have big doubts that Larkyn will go to the Olympics. She's lovely, but she has no 3-3. Aurora Cotop will likely surpass her if she doesn't get one soon.

Alaine better be prepping herself real good for this once in a life time opportunity.

For the rest of you guys, here's a graphic about how the judges looked at these ladies from Tulup: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C8Rd2CSWsAA8nLj.jpg

What does the colours mean?

Maybe. Skated big at Nationals, and at Worlds. Yet 7th at CoC,, 6th at NHK, 7th at Golden Spin with a 155 score, 12th at 4CC way behind Nagasu and Bell are not the results of a US number 1.

In that case, the Ladies US No. 1 throne has been so empty for so long that there are cobwebs and spiders and even snakes slithering around.

re: wakaba.

of course she's not competitive. the judges refuse to reward her outstanding skating skills and deep edges, fabulous choreo and great musicality. it's not her fault though. it's the judges who should be shamed here, not her. a fall is not a meltdown. she's young but her presentation is beautiful and sophisticated. japan SHOULD support her. she was one of the 5 or so ladies i actually enjoyed today.

Same I love how Wakaba performs with her heart. Tho I was sad that she didn't perform her best (it didn't seem like she peaked at all this season? But she was injured so I guess that's a factor) But I'm glad she had a fairly good worlds debut if u don't see the scores....Especially for her gorgeous and clean short. Even Yuna fell twice in her free in her worlds debut but had a perfect short so even tho Wakaba wasn't perfect, this is far from a disaster worlds debut

I left the ISU site up on my phone so that as soon as I woke up I could catch the result. Here is how this went:

- search for the Aussie flag. Oh, poor Kailani, what happened? :sad21:

- wait, does this mean no Olympic spot?

- search for who won - OH YEAH KICK ALL OF THE BOOTY MY MOON QUEEN

- oh. two Canadian ladies on the podium. joy.

- ugh, Kostner too high.

- OH MY GOD CHEN BEAT WAGNER AND THE US LADIES KEPT THREE SPOTS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  this is gonna piss the Mirai fans off so much

- wth happened with the rest of the results

- good thing i didn't get up this looks like it was a trainwreck at some point

But mostly I am just sad about the Olympic spot. I guess that's what Nebelhorn is for, but I had been hoping to avoid that for the ladies. Oh, and happy that my Queen is still the Queen, even knowing she'll be getting mercilessly trashed because HOW DARE EVIL RUSSIAN WIN.

Maybe the Mirai fans would be piss off, but I think Mirai herself would be pleased. She gets a second chance to go to the Olympics and she may even push Ashley off as revenge for 2014.

Oh, I just realised that Evgenia's Lutz edge was called correct. She still had ! on Europeans. Can anyone confirm if it was ok? (just 3 skaters got 'e' or '!' btw, Ashley was one of them).

The camera angle is so bad. It's dubious, but from what's available, it's a shallow outside at best and may even have been flat or shallow inside edge. The camera angle is worse with Kaetlyn's lutz. I miss the closed-up replays that actually focus on the feet. Oh well. Even if they were wrong edges, it's not the first time the tech panel passed on them.
