2018 Olympic Figure Skating Free Dance

Does anyone have any idea what Virtue and Moir’s coach was whispering to Scott right before they received their scores in the k&c?

She covered her mouth while whispering something to him and he replied “oops” and then appeared to mouth the words “oh well” and then she continued to say something about it and he said “oh well” again...

Just curious if there was some issue or mistake we didn’t see that she could have been commenting on?

If she covered her mouth, then obviously it was a secret and didn't want the public to read on her lips.

I would be a bit surprised if their coach felt the need to tell them about mistakes at that moment in time, given this was probably their last competitive skate, as well as to allow them to enjoy the moment.

Having come back from watching the Ice Dance in person, what an event it was!

Here's my two cents which should be taken as the BIBLE! HAHA. Kidding.

1. There's lots of talk about music choice, some liked or disliked Moulin Rouge. Here's the thing, if DOESN'T MATTER if you hated the music or not. You don't get deductions if the music is terrible. The point of the judge is to see if the skaters interpreted the "crappy" music. I personally like the Moulin Rouge music and V/M PERFORMED and INTERPRETED it EPICALLY. It will go down as an Olympic Classic. I was sitting with lots of Koreans and they were ooohing and ahhhing throughout the routine.

2. The gold could have gone to both V/M and P/C. Both are superior skaters! I'm not a fan of people trashing either skaters as they bring great qualities to the sport. I know no other skater that can interpret music like V/M, and I know no other skater that has the most beautiful skating skills like P/C.

3. If I was the judge, I would give them perfect 10's all across and board and made it a tie for GOLD.

4. What's funny about reading some of the comments is people complaining about bias judging and the people complaining sound just as bias.

5. I've never been more excited about Ice Dancing. The new scoring system has really made Ice Dancing exciting to watch.

6. If I had to pick a gold medalist base on the crowd's reaction, The arena was cheering more loudly for V/M.

7. Some seem really upset by the results, you might need a hug. I'll give you one ((((HUGS)))))

How about we discuss couples we "discovered" during the competition.

I liked the pair from Poland. They skated to something that sounded bouncy and ballroom-y, but it wasn't standard ballroom music.

In a competition that was heavily tilted towards lyrical programs, it stood out.

I'm sure the technical experts would point out that they have things to work on - they were not at the top of the heap, to be sure - but I liked them very much.

You should see their Dirty Dancing FD! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUVr50-aj3U

The Germans and the Spanish are my ones to watch in the next 4 years. As much as I liked Sara with Adria, I think her partnership with Khaliavin is very fortunate, they were much sharper than expected. And Kavita&Joti are such a breath of fresh air (doesn't hurt that she's cute as a button). I also enjoyed the Japanese and from the more well known couples, super impressed by Guignard/Fabri and Gilles/Poirier.

I thought the Germans and the Spanish team were great. I loved their FD last year to.. two men in love I think it was called. It really moved me.

My best friend cried when Chris fell in the team event and she had never really seen them skate before. She said it was one of the most beautiful skates she'd ever seen up until then. We both agreed that Kana's costume change was the best.

Hey you! Glad to see you posting here! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the rest. :)

Okay, I think I should explain my previous post about V/M's Seasons FD. Truth be told, I liked their Seasons FD but if we are going to compare it to Mahler and Moulin Rouge ... It just doesn't compare. No, I am not holding any grudges. I am just calling a spade a spade. And yes, I am aware that this is an extreme example though I am sure Tarasova/Morosov fans will feel the same way four years from now. God-willing they wont have to experience another Candyman FS (another not so Olympic worthy program ... or worthy in general).

If there is one thing that I enjoy about Ice Dance, it is the memorable Free Dances that are performed at the Olympics. If we exclude Navka/Kostamarov's FS at the 2006 Olympics (they skated to Tosca, right?), we have had some pretty remarkable OGM winning free dances over the years.

Don't worry BlackAxel, it's not people like you I'm talking about. It's people who disrespect Tessa & Scott for throwing shade at Marina. She did them wrong, and they are free to speak up about it.

Ulitmately they moved on from Sochi and from Marina. They had already talked to Patrice Lauzon about going to Gadbois in 2014 at Sochi. They did just that and now have their OGM.

But some people haven't mentally moved on from that press conference. :disapp: Oh well, they can live in the past.

Top two couples were both great. V/M definitely pulled something out of the hat last night to skate their best of the season , but , at the end of the day , their story is a repeat of last years World's , it's a case of P/C losing the gold as much as V/M winning it. If that sounds a little churlish , it's not meant to . but the French free dance has been superior all season , and their failings in the SD have seen them end up with silver.

Well done to the Shibutani's - a lot of hard work over the years has gone into this bronze. I'm not mad keen on the Coldplay theme , but they certainly make it work.

Hubbell/Donohue , oh dear oh dear , again. Think that even without the touch on the ice they would still have been edged out. One day something will happen for them. They're definitely different to everyone else out there with that blues/soul intensity.

Loved loved loved Bobrova/Soloviev. Loved that old style Russian art house gloom. Loads of power , speed , emotion , passion. Possibly the programme that moved me the most with the intent fused with the musicality. Just exquisite.

Cappellini?Lanotte - oh please. Started OK for the first minute , then went as dry and stale as last weeks loaf. Turned to my non skating fan friends in the room and asked them if they were getting it? Boring , said one , Completely lost my interest , said the other. Sadly , I could but agree.

Weaver /Poje never disappoint. That's just a gorgeous piece of work. Let's hope they can climb a few places at the World's.

It's sad what happened to Chock/Bates , but they have bigger problems to overcome than just that fall. That programme isn't good enough to compete with the top 5 or so anyway , and their game needs to up , or else they're stuck on the backburner for the future.

Penny and Nick , well well done. That programme is the loveliest thing and you skated it as well as ever.

I greatly enjoyed the Spanish team

Imagine is pretty much a nursery rhyme, so I agree, but why do you blame Yoko?

It was a more a joke since she always gets blame for the Beatles breakup so I just heaped something else on her. But really, after he started dating Yoko his writing became dreary and humorless. Although her conceptual art, as impressive as it is, has almost zero humor so perhaps there is something to that.

I’m just happy that Pasha Grishuk isn’t the greatest ice dancer of all time anymore

Its a darn shame that the original GOATs Torvill & Dean only won once. Dean especially continues to reign supreme as a choreographer for several teams this year. A true guru of the sport.

Yes, all in all canadians only got gold because of problem with the dress. Short program points helped them.As always. Canadias behave like they won fairly and with BIG margin. It was only 0.70+ unfortunately...They behave like FD fRench didnt happen anf there were no WR. DOnt mention winning with such small gap. Thay have too big ego for that

Isn't skating a bit theatrical? I think Moonlight is great but there is a reason theatrical music are often warhorse for skating program because they work well. It elevates the audience's mood. I find V/M's strength very obvious and they play to it. They're threatrical, dymanic and dramatic. They chose what is best for them.

P/C are more classical, ethereal and they choose music that make them stand out. Hence their SD is weak IMO. That kind of music does not suit their style.

I didn't critique their theatricality at all, my comment had nothing to do with that though? Theatricality doesn't mean uninspired, over-determined, simplistic choreography. You could hire a generic choreographer working at any mediocre dance studio to choreograph such a thing. It's bland and narratively unremarkable. You can disagree with my assessment of their choreography as such, of course, but I wasn't complaining about drama and theatre. If anything, Tessa's body wasn't nearly dramatic and expressive enough to characterize the music properly.

I think P/C's SP is weak because it's bad choreography with mediocre music edits and construction, not because of deficits in their abilities imo. It struck me as a "placeholder" program designed to get the job done technically and little more.

LOL. It's funny how one (wo)man's boring program is another (wo)man's treasure. I skipped rewatching Penny and Nick's program because I think it's a borefest, and I love Anna and Luca's FD.

To be perfectly honest, this final reminds me a lot of the pairs final in 2002.Two completely different styles but really can’t be compared and possibly will be argued over who was better for years to come

More like Gordeeva/Grinkov(art) vs Mishkutionok/Dmitriev (passion) with the placements reversed.

Rain--you are not alone about Chock and Bates FD. I LOVE it and so do a lot of my friends. I was devastated for them and wish we could have seen where it would have landed them in the mix. I hope they skate well at Worlds.
