2018 Olympic Figure Skating Free Dance

Hurtado/Khaliavin have really come together this year! I cannot wait to see how they improve on the next 4 years.

They also made me excited to watch Alina.

There are in fact real bird chirping sounds. No one is going crazy. It's been confirmed that they are the lost souls of the parrots that were sacrificed to make that parrot dress we saw last night.

Hurtado / Khaliavin

Love how they start with speed and tight holds. Good flamenco styling through the twizzles (Level 4). Nice phrasing and ice coverage of t he circular step (Level 3). Interesting first position in the combo spin, could be slightly faster (Level 4). Good straight line spread eagle lift. Nice tapping into the stationary lift. Twizzles could be a bit smoother in the diagonal step (Level 2). Good positions through the last rotational lift (only a Level 3) and a nice choreographic lift to end the program.

A strong performance for the Spanish team. I felt that they started boldly with a lot of speed and fierce determination. The feeling dissipated a little after the stationary lift with a few mistakes on the diagonal step and the last minute. But the concept and expression of Don Quixote were clear and the flamenco flourishes were precise and unmistakable. I definitely want to see this team grow further.

I hadn't seen much of the Spanish team before, but I really like them!!!
I really liked the character and energy they brought to this dance :agree:. I am used to seeing this performed as a solo piece, but I enjoyed this FD.

Yeah, "lyrical jazz" as it's called. Just very tiresome to watch. No creativity, uncentred turns (falling into second position to disguise lack of control), unpointed feet, port-de-bras so imprecise it would make Bolshoi implode.

Yup. Mostly tricks and flash. I took it for a year or two as a teen (it was just called "lyrical" in the studios I was in) and hated it. Looking back now, I'm a bit surprised the studios offered it. I went to very serious preprofessional ballet schools and as a teacher now, I would have real misgivings about offering it in a studio I owned (not that I ever plan on owning one, but still).
