2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

Karen really understands how to use the music - but she needs to skate it with more definition. More precision with her great motions and choreo and it would be something. The mistakes clearly took some gas out of her and wish she could’ve carried more speed into the steps a bit. That opening lutz was massive, but she needs to start rotating it sooner - she may need to re-work that technique entirely. Her spins positions and control are impressive too, and they actually highlight details in the music unlike how just about everyone else uses spins.

I wish she could, and would be properly rewarded, for a real proper 3-position spiral sequence. It would be a marvel to see (I’m still mad we never got to see one from Yulia!).

I think 198. could put Maria in contention for bronze depending what the others do.
Nah, no way. The Japanese are very consistent, and Kaetlyn/Carolina always score high even with mistakes (which are likely). Gabby will likely pass that too, barring a meltdown.

I just don't think gambill has what it takes to coach a top(medal contending, in case anyone needed clarification) skater. Karen and especially vincent are both very talented, but a little something is missing(aside from rotation).

Well, not the skate Karen wanted, really hope she sorts out her jump issues because otherwise she's got everything.

Karen Chen

Smooth 3Lz, a bit off so unable to get the combo off. Finished the landing on the 3F (has an ! call). Good attack on the step sequence (Level 4). Very fast flying camel spin (Level 4). Great length and ice coverage on the 2A+1Lo+3S. Good fight on the second 3Lz+2T. Not enough height on the 3Lo, and so a fall (also called <). A step-out on the 3S, just had no time to reocver. Very good speed on the combo spin (Level 4). A little rough on the 2A but completed. Fantastic spiral with wonderfully high leg positions. And a lovely attitude position and wonderful speed through the layback spin (Level 4).

A shame on some of those landings. Perhaps the boot problem really unnerved her. She'll lose base value points in a few spots not able to get the combo off the salchow and not getting the 3T off. The fall on the 3Lo, also underrotated, will also hurt. I do think she sold the program more throughout with good flourishes of the arms and strong speed in both the spins and across the ice. An alright performance, all considered.

OK, it was a so so performance. I think Karen still needs a little time to grow into the competitor she could potentially be. Let's hope she will grow into it. But we've had many U.S. ladies with potential and they haven't completely materialized the way they could have. It's just a problem all over for us.

I love Karen Chen's skating. I feel like she would benefit immensely from working with someone to correct her jumping technique and a sports psychologist.
