It's balance. The men had a great free, so the women have to fall.

Chen did a bunch of crossovers and quads, not all of them well (and splatted one); Hanyu skated well given his condition but had to save two landings, eating a +COMBO deduction for a rep due to a saved landing with no combo; Fernández popped a quad and lost ten points for it; Boyang fell; Uno fell on his first jump and didn’t get the UR call he deserved; Aliev was visibly injured... the level of skill was absolutely higher for the men, but it was still messy in the men’s free.

Mixed skate by Mirai, but it was nice to see her actually performing for once! Those pops are really going to hurt her, but she got some good jumps done too.

Mirai is learning just how much of a mind game the 3A really is! Over 80% of the men skaters struggle with it! Even within the top 5 (with the exception of Yuzuru and Shoma).

well what happened here is exactly what many feared might happen if she missed the 3A but lately she was good at recovering and putting it past her so it's a bit of surprising to see her revert to the old self again.

Mirai Nagasu

Ouch, a skid off on the 3A take-off. Out of nowhere, why?! 3F+3T nicely landed, and a nice 3S as well. Great combo spin (Level 4) with a strong flying camel spin (Level 4), took a little bit for her to find her center. Good 2A+3T+2T in the second half. Nice spiral before the attempted 3Lz, but only able to do a 1Lz. 3F completed close to the boards. Step sequence was a bit slow across the ice (Level 3). A sweet choreo sequence. Good 3Lo+2T and a wonderful layback spin to finish (Level 4).

Huh, I haven't really seen her pop that much this season, but that waltz jump pop on the 3A was very unexpected and then the pop on the lutz will hurt her base value by a lot. Just a loss of about 13 points and of course no positive GOE on any of them. She'll definitely look back at her team event free skate as what she'll remember her Olympics by, not this one. That's okay, Mirai. You'll get over this.
