2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

I'm pretty sure every single comment disagrees with him. I take what he says with a grain of salt though, he's kinda losing it.

Actually Kurt Browning on CBC was slightly down on Evgenia's performance level in both programs as well, compared to the expected standard, and seemed to prefer what Alina put out there (though not a pure love-fest; he still did point out some small issues with Alina too).

On a side note, Kurt and Carol praised Satoko a greal deal, even more than Kaetlyn actually (though they probably didn't feel to need to hype up Kaetlyn at that point and were just concentrated on waiting for the result, which they went on to proclaim correct and fully deserved)

Ironically, Alina had problems almost all seasons with the short programme, and now she wins because of it

yeah, that's something!

But the key moment was when she missed the loop combo. If she wouldn't hit that loop later, she wouldn't be a champion. You all can say what you want about Eteri's training methods, but in the end her skaters are ready to bad scenarios like no one else and that pays off.

I wonder if Zagitova and Medvedeva will be representing Kazakhstan at next Olympics.

Final 3 ladies (amongst others) were just stunning to watch. I have never been a fan of Osmond, but I’ve loved her programmes in this competition and entirely think that bronze was hers to claim.

My heart is still so torn 😭 Neither of our Russian girls did anything wrong and to come out with the same score in the free was (for me) the best outcome. Actually it demonstrates that artistry and technical ability in the long are both important. It just came down to a short programme. It’s the continual battle between art and sport, and we can’t disregard the technical side if we still want skating to be considered a sport. But I hope to see far more skaters following in the artistic shoes of Kostner and Medvedeva because whilst the jumps make us cheer or groan, it’s the artistry that makes us fall in love with the sport.

Medvedeva was stunning and had me in tears - I’ve never seen her react like that. I can’t wait to see what she brings to the table next and hopefully she can push her technical because she is one of the few skaters who has the artistic ability to allow her to do that without ruining her programmes. There is more to life and skating than an OGM, and how many people can say they are an OSM?!

Zagitova did so well - whilst she lacks the maturity and performance, all the same technical skills are there. Her footwork is L4, her spins are stunning, it’s just needs greater refinement. I think that that type of jumping ability should be rewarded because it’s as much a skill as fast spins or clean footwork. She won’t be able to do it forever, and for the moment what she lacks in artistry, she can make up in technique. Handling that pressure as a 15yo really takes guts. I hope that her performance ability can improve now, but I’d expect that to as she gets older.

In my heart, I wanted Medvedeva to win, but in December, none of us were even sure she would or could compete. She’s had such a rough season and to have the mental stamina to deliver two skates like that absolutely blows my mind. That silver medal shouldn’t just represent Med’s skating today, but her entire season where she battled on through hell and high water to be at these games and she did not disappoint a single person. We don’t know where the sport is going to go next, but I certainly hope that she is there pushing the field, as she’s always done. I still can’t say who I thought should have won, but I strongly believe that neither girl lost, whatever the medal colour.

All three ladies were a pleasure to watch and to end the Olympics with a competition like that was marvellous. Please remember whatever you’re posting online, they’re only youngsters, they aren’t responsible for scoring, and they all did a fantastic job at the end of the day.

{p.s. rumour is that Medvedeva has already said she’s looking to the next Olympics?}

I didn't think I would be this bitter and turned off but Zhenya's reaction to everything really got to me. A dream career and a dream performance at the Olympics--and it felt like she lost out on gold by the most arbitrary decision.

A lot of the skaters deserved more than what they got tonight...

Have always found Med overscored with PCS and GOEs and now Alina. Both of them are to be honest overscored. Even Kaetlyn is somewhat overscored as well as Caro.

PCS and GOEs scoring has really changed since it started in Sochi.

When this new -5 to +5 scoring is introduced maybe next season(not sure), I think this will just again make matters worst. I am sure judges will push their favorites with +5 and their not so favorites with +1 or +2 even if clean. Satoko will be burried with 0 or 1 on her jumps by the judges. Hopefully her other elements will be scored better.

Anyway, I am actually okay with Alina winning. I thought Alina's reaction when Med score came out and she realize she won gold was kind of touching. I kind of sense she felt lonely even with the win. I think she has worked hard for it as well. Whether she deserved it? It's complicated. I do hope she will be given a much better, more rounded program. No more frantic jumps.

With regards to the placement, I think it's okay. As everyone in the last group skated almost clean, it really was difficult for Satoko to maintain that 3rd position even though I wanted her to medal. Satoko did her best and skated clean.

Lastly, I really hope that starting next season skaters other than Russia/Europe will finally be given the right PCS and GOEs. Since Sochi, even with same technical content, even with Tanos and Backloads, these regions have always been underscored with GOE and PCS.

I was happy for Alina. She skated well and won. Good for her.
I was sad for Evgenia but she nearly did it and should be very proud of herself.

Thrilled for Kaetlyn, Satoko, Kaori and Dabin for skating so well.

Gutted for Gabby. She looked in shock. Sad for Mirai but she seemed okay with it. I wish she would have gotten that 3 axel again. It's a thing of beauty.

All in all I thought it was a good night.
I find it interesting that Mirai's best skates were in the Team Event her 3A was so perfect there... Felt sad for the 3 American ladies. I loved Satoko's program so much. And proud of Dabin Choi's cleanly skated programs. I also felt really bad for Gabby and wonder if she had anything healthwise causing her to not make jumps after that 1st fall, she looked so deflated and my heart hurt for her. Oh and very proud Kaetlyn came through with a clutch skate for the Bronze

It feels so odd for me to be rallying behind Evgenia the way that I am. I have never been big on her, but her skating really touched me tonight and I am all about selecting the rightful winner of an event no matter if I am their fan or not. She and Kaetlyn both deserved more tonight. Such a shame.

I am still just gutted for Gabby. I rewatched her reaction to her scores in the KnC & my heart shattered into even tinier pieces :sad21:

+5 -5 new scoring is a TERRIBLE idea. I cannot fathom who thought this was a good idea. The judges can't even correctly apply GOEs as they exist now, what made anyone think adding more confusing categories would make things BETTER?

At least falls will get seriously punished. And it creates some room for differentation. Really, essentially every clean element by top skaters is +2 or +3 GOE now, almost without exception. So the only thing differentiating those is how many of the judges feel like giving +2 and how many +3. With a +5 -5 range there'll be more meaningful separation - Assuming it's done correctly.

It also would likely make URs and flutzes more punishing.

Medvedeva has a better claim to the gold than Yuna ever did let that sink in.

Well, at least Medvedeva did perform 7 triples.
