2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

Ugh, this is also why I feel sorry for Alina (and why I suspect she has to hide her tears of joy). Probably most of Russia, esp the serious figure skating fans are rooting for Zhenya. They know her and love her, whereas Alina is still sort of the new kid. It's gotta be tough dethroning the queen. Just like if Shoma beat Yuzuru at Olympics, I guarantee you the Yuzu fans (including myself) would be out for blood... I hope Alina's team, and her fellow Russians celebrate her victory appropriately and don't deny her moment in the glory just because they are upset for Zhenya. That wouldn't be fair for Alina either.

I'm a Yuzu fan, but I will not be out for blood if Shoma beat him at the Olympics or any competition for that matter if Shoma had the better skates. :)

After her Olympic victory, I think there will be time enough for Alina's compatriots to know her better and appreciate her more.

Congratulations to the medalists! Wished Satoko was among them.

PCS has become a joke. Med deserved to win. I'll get over it- but I hope this isn't the future of figure skating.

Osmond: When I was in the draw yesterday and I realized that I would compete after Alina, I was pretty sure I would hear a high score. So it helped me mentally prepare. Once my music started, I went back to my training and how I practiced at home.

P.S. I'm still shocked about how amazing all three girls have skated. I wish i would have such nerves.

When all is said and done, Kaetlyn was much closer to the gold in this competition than almost anyone would have anticipated, and would have been much closer still if the PCS and GOE scoring did not have the issues that the majority of us complain about. I'm not saying anyone wuzrobbed, but it probably deserved to be quite close.

Despite Zagitova's shortcomings though, I think she earned the gold for the move alone of throwing in the 3loop on her second lutz like that.. That was badass!!
It also a bit ironically felt like a throwback to the kind of exciting moment we could see in the old 6.0 style of competing, which many of us miss.

The top 6 ladies all skated to the best of their ability, on the grandest of stages. I hope every one of them goes to bed tonight thinking of what they accomplished rather than what they lost. Just making it to the Olympics is an achievement, and doing what they did with the world watching is mindblowing. :points:

Well, I just wanted to point out, charlotte14 kinda predicted it back in August based on history.

This historical rule lives on! Congrats to the medalists!

Grit gets Gold.

If nothing else, hopefully this result will quieten the Skater-Haters who feel figure skating isn’t a sport.
The most technically skilled held her nerve, threw down and won.
Brava, Alina!!

Evgenia should be crazy proud of herself regardless. There's nothing else she could've really done once Zagitova's PCs were spiked into that same range. They're both perfect 99% of the time and Zagitova's tech is stronger.

What a competitor. Heart of a champion indeed

I did not expect I would cry watching Ladies's event, but I must say I did :drama:

What an event, the good fights from all skaters!! Congratulations to all the medalists

I can not help but admire Evgenia as a person and as an athlete, much respect

And lastly, I am so proud of Satoko and Kaori for doing their best in the Olympics, I want them to enjoy the rest of the Olympics and have lots of rest :)

Yes but she still messed at worlds, 4CC, etc. This wasn't a Katelyn peak, this was the best skate of her life, and also the best inconsistent program turned beautiful at the right moment I've ever seen. She finally became a swan. It was nuts, she can bring that medal home and be so proud.

I loved how in the the last section of this performance she had that extra snappiness to her movements, that expressed "yes, I have done this! I own this!", but in the character of the program. She didn't even smile or fist-pump at the last jump, you could see she was focusing on staying in character and attacking the footwork section first, and then right at the end of that she fully snapped into diva-mode going into the choreo sequence. A bit like the the confident head bob after her lutz in the SP. She's coming into her inner diva. She seems to have built slowly but wonderfully on the confidence that last season's world silver would have given her.

I’m so proud of you Satoko Miyahara! What a perfect performance 👏🏼👏🏼🏅 She was victimised by lower PCS. She was phenomenal!

I thought Satoko would win the bronze. I thought Kaetlyn would falter after hearing the high score of Alina but she gave the skate of her life!

I’m so proud of Kaetlyn for peaking at the right time and the right moment (She now has Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze).

Congrats to Alina and Evgenia!!!!! Phenomenal!

What an epic event!

Dabin was amazing. She needs an influential coach and choreographer

Give Zagitova a riding crop, blast Britney’s “Work B****,” and let her teach seminars on grace under pressure. In that damn tutu.

At the very least, someone get a translator and put her in a room with Nathan Chen.

Zhenya, I feel so heartbroken for you.

You may not have gotten gold, but your performance tonight will always be in my heart. Every jump superb, flawless (cmon guys, please let us ignore that one maybe-flutz for one tiny frozen moment in time). GOE through the roof. Interpretation - feels like such a clumsy word, doesn’t it? You can hardly call Zhenya’s skating an interpretation of Anna Karenina when it’s somehow so different, as if you added another dimension to the story. I love the way Caro flows across the ice and how Osmund irresistibly tempts you into her program and how Satton’s every movement is in perfect harmony with everything else, but there is something about you, Zhenya, that I have never seen and doubt I will ever see again. Maybe it’s the way your every program tells a story, or how every moment in your program is filled with these tiny details that turn a good program into an interpretative masterpiece.

Every day, training endlessly for hours, putting heart and soul and something more as well into every moment, while in front of your eyes a young skater almost effortless surpasses you, not by skill but by gaming the system. Years and years of hard work that is the behind-the-scenes preparation for the magic that takes place during your programs. And all for nought? Maybe there is something poetic in how Yuna Kim also lost the battle between true artistry and true system manipulation. Everyone knows that Yuna will always be the real champion of Sochi. Zhenya, for me at least, you will always be the real champion of Pyeongchang.

I saw a clip of you trying out Alina’s 3Lz3Lo in practice… oh Zhenya! You thought that you could beat everyone by just being your perfect self, but you realized that you could not beat Alina. That 3Lz3Lo… you didn’t end up landing that combo, at least not that time. You fell, and banged the wall, and skated away for another try. But maybe you also realized that you couldn’t be exactly like Alina either. What point would there be anyway, to have two clones executing the same program in two different disguises. Backloading, tano, rippon…

Maybe Alina knows this too. And in the end, when she was crying in that box, maybe some of her tears might have been for you too.

I meant back stage. You have to hug at the ceremony. That's part of the deal. Why not acknowledge her back stage in the little room like the others? Maybe Alina was shy because she does not speak English.

Alina and Kaetlyn were smiling at each other and speaking together backstage as they were standing and waiting for the officials to usher them out. No idea what was said, or indeed if anything was actually said other than giggles and shrugs (they looked like typical teen competitors waiting to commence a ceremony whilst they wonder what is going on), but they certainly seemed happy in one another’s company.

Brava, Alina!!

It isn't only a jumping contest either.
