It's interesting, looking at the top 4 pairs, it's the older, more experienced pairs (Germans 34 and 29; and Canadians 33 and 32) who kept a cool head and improved their scores in the final free skate. The younger, more inexperienced pairs - the Chinese & the Russians (all in their early 20s) - started off stronger, but cracked a bit under the big Olympic pressure in the final, and lost the advantage points they built up in their starter short program.

This shows that sometimes veteran experience & cool-head maturity wins in the final leg over novice inexperience & youthful emotions, frayed nerves.

I'm dying to know what Dmitriev thinks of their costume reveal, LOL.

I think Dmitriev had one of his own in the Rachmaninov program. He pulled a red hanky out at the end of the skate I think. Anyone else remember?

It is amazing what Sui was able to do with that type of pain. Sui had foot surgery. Her feet will never be like a skater without that type of injury. And she was in pain during this skate.

This makes her all the more awesome. She is magnificent!!

Explain one thing to me: Why is there way less emotional investment in Pairs than in any of the other disciplines? I might just read the wrong posts but all in all the athmosphere appears to be much more laid back and respectful of all skaters here than in threads where ID, ladies or men are involved.

I asked myself the same.

This Olympic pairs competition was incredible high-class. Maybe the best of all time.

Usually pairs is way more about falls and shaky elements. Just have a look at Europeans. Half of the pairs just not a joy to watch because their level of skating i and connection is not good enough.

It is not that easy to become a fan.

Pairs is so incredible hard and difficult. That is why it is the highlight of the Games. And many agree with that.

I wrote this somewhere before, but it's easier to get obsessed with one person. It's harder to dislike two people. And the pairs need a lot of time to grow, and are usually given that time. They either grow on you or not, but usually there is no young upstart that 'takes away' a deserved medal from an old favourite and disappears one season later.

Now that I've cooled off a bit after that amazing event, I just wanted to say this:

I know we all mainly focus on Aliona's road to her gold, on her persistence and strength and how inpiring her whole story is, but I think it's also time to give MAJOR KUDOS to Bruno Massot. It hit me yesterday, imagine the amount of pressure you're under being Aliona Savchenko's partner during her last attempt at gold. The whole world holding their breaths, wondering if you have it in you to help her achieve that goal, or if you'll be the one to hold her back. Especially after what happened in the SP, I would've been a wreck before the FS and Bruno just went out, gave it his all and handled the pressure beautifully.

Truly, what a pair. Two amazingly strong people.

I honestly don't think any upcoming figure skating moment will be able to top what happened in pairs.

I agree and I myself thought about this as well - we (at least I) tend to forget that this was the first Olympics for Bruno and there were huge expectations on him. I cannot even imagine how he must have felt after the pop in the SP and I am thoroughly amazed that they pulled it so together in the FS. Also glad that Aljona was very supportive after the SP as Bruno said in an interview, so I agree, what a pair.

I also have to say that S/M have had great free programs for the last 2 years and I really love their style. They created a wonderful Olympic moment, I'm still on such a natural high from it. I love this partnership more than any of her previous. They just work well together.

It doesn't take much work if someone knows the scores. Sui/Han had an element downgraded after the performance. Once the judges scores are in, you can just drop the levels accordingly to whatever is needed to create the desired result.

You know the tech panel doesn't see the judges' scores, right?

Also, the judges can't finalise their marks until the panel finishes.

I just want to say what a skate for Aljona and Bruno.
Aljona is the figure skating version of artistic gymnast Oksana Chusovitina.

If you don’t know who oksana is, you must search her up.

Both legends who changed countries to represent Germany. Both changed the sport in so many ways.

  • Only if the definition of "you" means the Technical Specialist PLUS one of either the Assistant Technical Specialist or Technical Controller.
  • In other words, for your conspiracy theory to work, 2 of the 3 technical panel members must be "in" on the plot, and actively collude together to manipulate and "drop the levels accordingly to whatever is needed to create the desired result."
    • Incredibly unlikely, to say the least! :roll5:

  • Plus this ⬆ (Karne beat me to it).

Also, the judges can't finalise their marks until the panel finishes.

  • And also this ⬆ (...although this is something I did not know before reading Karne's post!)

There just never seems to be an end to these wild conspiracy theories ... despite a complete lack of any hard evidence! :confused2:

I got pretty emotionally invested...:slink:

I wouldn't recommend it though you end up looking a bit of dolt.
