2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

I just want to take a small moment to recognize Stanislav Morozov. Others may forget him, but I don’t. He was partners with both Volosozhar and Savchenko, both of whom won OGMs with their new partners. He definitely has some magic touch in their formative and foundational skating, and I salute him for setting his partners up for greatness. 😎

Congratulations to all the teams, this was one hell of a night! So much good skating!! I'm SO happy for S/M especially Aljona this might possibly be my favorite skating win of all time. S/H are definitely coming for 2022 but all I can say is I've probably never been more invested in watching one of these events in a lonnnnng time. :party2:

I 110% agree with you, it was a shame to see him leave the competitive skating world but we need to acknowledge him.

Maybe now they'll start getting programs that aren't TACKY AS HELL or SNOOZEFESTS TO MUSIC YOUR GRANDPARENTS WOULDN'T EVEN LISTEN TO.

Heaven knows, they have the talent. Their SP is lovely. But Nina Mozer seems almost to have a personal vendetta against them by foisting FPs on them that don't suit them at all.

That's fine, but no-one who complained about Candyman better ever complain about boring classic music programs from T/M (like they had when they started out).

Then we can talk about vendetta's.

I understand that there are two events that make up a competition, the short and the free. But I hate to see a messy FS with multiple mistakes beat a clean one because of a lead from the short program. It is one of the worst feelings in skating for me, especially at such an important event.

With a single mistake that did not disrupt the flow of the performance, skating their hearts out the entire time we could talk. But then pop, then the step out, then the levels, performance quality dropping off toward the end. No. That was not the performance of an OGM, short program notwithstanding. It just wasn't their night.

100% agree, they need to get back to classical. They are a classical team and they should take advantage of that. Different teams have different styles, like James and cipres can never do classical programs like Rachmaninov concerto 2 or Chopin nocturnes/preludes. I really think tarasova and morozov can achieve great things with classical.

So happy for Aljona. :yahoo:

But at the same time, so annoyed with BBC. Instead of pairs replay, I am stuck with curling and skiing. :slink:

No they need to do J/C's programs. I suggest they get themselves to Zimmerman at once. Performance quality of J/C + T/M out of this world elements; they would be irresistible.

As long as the rumours of them splitting up are not true (please let them not be true!).

Can we appreciate for a moment Duhamel and Radford's amazing achievement: the first ever quad throw landed at the Olympics.

With how they've pushed the technical side of the sport, nobody deserves that record more than they do. She's a superstar. Seeing her literally jump for joy on the podium was so uplifting! I thought they were key to setting the tone for the Canadian team in the team event, too.

Meagan completely won me over with her sportsmanship at this Olympics. From her jumping out of her seats cheering for Mirai, to her 'best 4th place' comment, to her watching Aljona's reaction with a huge smile. I haven't even seen the plushie ceremony yet.

I think if you go back and look at the comments from the SP, people were pretty much in agreement that the SP was a much better fit for their styles and personalities. I don't recall anyone using the word "boring."

And it doesn't have to be strictly classical music. Look at what Bobrova and Soloviev did with the soundtrack to Anna Karenina, which is a masterpiece of a FD. High Classic Russian style There's a reason why Russians who have used it have been so successful. But you can't make a sex kitten or a sex god out of a girl and boy next door if it isn't a good fit personally. It just looks tacky.

Fair juding happened. Didn't expect to say that!

So happy for Aljona! That performance was spellbounding. :points:

There were plenty of people hating on their SP, I had to leave the thread it was making me so angry.

T/M are damned if they do and damned if they don't - Classical programs = the same old boring stuff that turns audiences off

Something new and different (their SP and FP last year , Candyman) = ridiculous idiots who wouldn't know class if it slapped them in the face.

I just wish people wouldn't pretend they're trying to "save" T/M from themselves. They clearly don't like their style whatever it is, so just ignore them instead of insulting them.

I hope that my critism of their LP doesn't come off as critical or negative on them. Their SP was glorious, but their FS was not a good vehicle for their talent. They are too good to have to skate to that awkward of a program. I would not have been happy if that program had beaten several of the others but I never wanted to see them fall apart. In fact, what I hope most is that they use this as motivation and come back next year fiercer than ever (and with a program that shows off their strengths).

Same here. I have nothing against Evgenia and Vladimir as people. I have the utmost respect for them as skaters: they have a phenomenal technical arsenal and are among the best in the world right now. There is no denying that, it’s a fact. I would never refer to them as “the bad guys”, and I certainly would never wish harm to them while performing their programs, nor would I do so to ANY SKATER, for that matter.

Sadly, they had several mistakes tonight that cost them a spot on the podium. It is what it is. I don’t see much squabbling going on in the forums here over the final placements and the judging (well, minus J/C, who seem to have been propped up despite mistakes). I think the panel got the podium right, and it seems that’s the consensus amongst the majority of us.

All is not lost. They have a good chance at winning worlds this year, they won the team silver medal with the other OAR skaters, AND they are young and have room to improve, as good as they already are.

Candyman as a program was just a bad idea all around, but you never know, they could have been given a beautiful, classical freeskate that Russian pairs are so well known for, yet still made mistakes, and ended up 4th. We will never know.

I wonder if Aljona will retire for good. And if so, what will Bruno do??? Aljona is also very lucky to find Bruno after Sochi. Without a good partner, the team goes nowhere; a good man in a pair is everything; it is even more remarkable that somehow Bruno gets his German citizenship in time and is willing to represent Germany. So even without Gold, they have already accomplished so much.

As much as I love Sui and Han, Savchenko andMassot deserved it. The former made way too many mistakes in the free to win over a completely clean free skate. Overall, incredible final flight!
