2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs FS

You know to make things perfectly fair, each team should be marked by a different set of judges with no judge from their own federation or country.
This would be impossible to implement but it would take the skating orders out of consideration and with giving out generous PCS marks.

The ice resurfacing is also a problem, or maybe better to say contributing factor, skating last for tarasova and morozov did not help them one bit as the ice was already roughed up. I am not saying the other teams won because they skated before tarasova and morozov but it could have affected their performance.

I don’t want to sound like I am hating on tarasova and morozov and making excuses for them as to why they didn’t medal but there were factors that affected them mentally and physically that just happened to be released during the skate.

1: the fact they could not compete for Russia but rather OAR, this is a hard blow. Russians are patriotic people and having no ‘foundation’ and support in the games, with prior knowledge that the Russian anthem and flag emblem and colours are banned did not help them one bit.

2: they had to act as the parents for the Russian pairs. If stolbova and klimov were there, that would have been so much moral support since they have already experienced everything in Sochi. So this meant they had to step up and take place as #1 of Russian pairs (in terms of experience and dealing with pressure etc) Basically leading Zabijako and Enbert, Astakhova and Rogonov. In addition, they are so young themselves.

3: skating order and ice resurfacing. Enough said. It’s not like S/H and D/R skated FLAWLESS programs, all those mini marks taken from executions and toe pick positions from ‘saving’ mistakes just could have been where tarasova fell on her throw jump. ( I mean remember 2013 worlds FS Tanya and Max’s throw jump where max fell where Tanya chipped the ice on her landing, there she didn’t even fall) so possibility

4: candyman choice of music. Tarasova and morozov are not the natural ‘extroverts’ and it was not ‘easy’ for them to pull of the style of the contemporary skate, (compare this with Savchenko massot’s SP where they are naturally just those people in day to day life) being brought up by the Russian system with Russian coaches and then suddenly Ro*in comes along and translates his experience and style to them was probably not as beneficial as it could have been..
I mean Ro*in skated with Aljona for so long and their style was never the classical Russian style or Eastern European but rather more contemporary and more ‘out there’. Ro*in skated with Aljona to candyman before so... there’s that.

My suggestion is that Moskvina and Mozer coaching for style, choreography and technical stuff would make THE best team in the world. Honestly. But please god forbid costume changing half way through the program, and body suits...
this would not help evgeniya or Vladimir

Ok enough from me
Thanks for listening everyone :)

Congrats to Aliona and Bruno. I am thrilled for them. That was a perfect performance!

Very happy for D/R what a wonderful way for them to end their
skating career together!

Sui/Han so close but it was not to be, Congrats on winning the Silver Medal!

I felt bad for T/M to many mistakes to make the podium.

Shout out to Morgan and Vanessa and Valentina and Ondrej!

Amazing night of Pair Skating.

I have to add, having watched the videos many-many times now, I have a newfound respect for Meagan. The way she congratulated Aljona and how sincere she seemed in K&C and backstage, was the greatest sportsmanship I have seen in a while.

Wait, Meagan and Eric are retiring?

NBC, are you kidding me???? You showed just six Pairs????? And you chocked the Canadian's FS scores????? You call that coverage?
You didnt even show the Americans or North Koreans?
Badly done. I hope ABC or someone else gets the Olys next time.
May the fleas from a thousand camels infest Tara and Johnny's room.

Now I am really scared about what they will do with icedance, mens and ladies....... :eeking:

NBC has the Olympics until the 2030s, and I don't know why everyone expects NBC to show every skating program when there are other sports to cover in primetime. NBC Sports covered everyone else except two pairs before the switch to NBC (the two pairs skipped could be seen on NBC Sports online). I think it's a matter of knowing how to maximize your viewing experience with the options given. The reason why they don't show hockey on NBC except the gold medal game typicallly is because they aren't going to show events in their entirety. CBS didn't show every figure skating program either when they had the Winter Olympics, so I don't think ABC will be better. They might do the dual screen thing like they did in the 80s (I've seen videos on YouTube because I would be too young to know this otherwise), but there are no guarantees.

I think you need to look up what nationalistic mean and it doesn't means supporting your favourite skaters. It's well known that the Americans commentators are way more egoistic just listen to their commentary for 2010 men fs. They had nothing bad to say today because their skaters weren't even in the mix. If the American girls were more competitive, they'll ramp on about Russian backloading and stuff. There's practically over 4 mins between end of skate to the announcement. How is that a short amount of time? And are you really naïve to think that the judging is as simple as that?

Actually, if you are supporting skaters from your country just because they are from your country that is nationalistic. Which is something I really don't understand in figure skating because it is a highly individual sport, the individual or pair is great. Not the country. In regards to the system of judging, it is very simple. The technical panel gives each element a level. The judges ( a separate panel from the technical panel which includes judges from many different countries (including China today) )then give a GOE mark for that element based on how well it was performed and assign PCS marks to the given skaters. Now, do certain judges have bias. You bet. The Chinese judge definitely favored Sui/han today. The judge from Germany was quite biased yesterday. But, it is not as easy now as it was in the old system to control who comes out on top. The judges aren't on the panel for their ability to quickly calculate totals, magically know the exact score their fellow judges gave, and then give scores that will guarentee that one team loses to another by .5 points. It is just not a realistic assertion you are making. If one teams PCS was dramatically higher than usual and anotherteams PCS the same or lower than usual despite a great flaw free performance then your argument might have merit. But , check the protocols, the PCS marks given were fair and justified. I don't know how you think this grand conspiracy happened in 4 minutes. Was the Chinese judge involved? How about all the other non-european judges? Additionally, everyone on the technical panel would have to support this. This is just not realistic. Be logical. I am sure you will be later when you have a chance to think and are not allowing your emotions to rule your head. Have a good day!

I just finished watching the event and came here to see the excitement, instead half of these posts are drowning in bitterness, WTH? Sui/Han are exquisite and they would've won by a landslide with a clean program, unfortunately for them they made one too many mistakes (also, Turandot is no Bridge over Troubled Water). Tarasova/Morozov would've won as well with a clean skate, however the program was a hot mess and the only travesty is them getting 9s for Performance and Interpretation (it was uncomfortable to watch at times with how tense they were, body and expression).
At the end of the day, the best program of the night won fair and square, there's not one thing Aliona and Bruno could've done better, it was quality beginning to end!

Which is something I really don't understand in figure skating because it is a highly individual sport, the individual or pair is great. Not the country. Additionally, you were making xenophobic remarks about an entire nation of people. (criticize Tara and Johnny all you want but don't label a whole nation in one way). But that is what people do when they are upset, which is why I suggested you stop commenting until you have a clearer head. In regards to the system of judging, it is very simple. The techinical panel gives each element a level. And how do you know I just support them just because they're from my country and not because they're good? Also doesn't the majority of people support their own skaters just because they represent their county? Also your xenophobic accusations is unjustified. I said "American commentators" not "every single American person" are egoistic. And that is true, see not just Tara/ Weir but their previous commentators and also their commentators for the summer Olympics. If the judging system was as lovely as you described here then figure skating wouldn't be marred by all those controversies every year.

Sorry, you are right. I misread your original comment. I apologize for that.

Never said the judging system was lovely. There are many problems with it. The technical panel only has access to one camera view to review rotation. This leads to inconsistent calls on jump rotation. There should be separate panels of judges to evaluate PCS and TES scores because there is very little time during the performance to really do both well so judges tend to reputation judge. They assume a skater performed well because they usually do, for instance. Also, I don't think judges from the countries whose pairs are gold medal contenders should be allowed to have judges on the panels. Many issues. I only said that the type of conspiracy you are trying to suggest, on this particular day, given the protocols and the judging panel is realistically impossible.

In regard to nationalism, many people do support skaters just because they are from their country. But, if you really love skating you will support skaters for other reasons. If you were really a pairs skating fan, I think you would so happy after viewing this long program because the performances were amazing and I am so happy for all the medalist. I don't like their accomplishments marred by fake "judging scandals".

I am done with this discussion. I have better things to do than to argue with someone looking for a reason to be upset. I hope you have a good day.

I had an all-day meeting at work today and dance class tonight, so I finally got around to watching the FS now (top four, plus the other Canadian pairs). What a fabulous event! The medallists should all be very proud of how they skated. The programs were all well-choreographed, passionately skated, and technically impressive (and the skaters were all fabulously dressed, on a lighter note). :) This is exactly the podium that I wanted, and I'm so glad to see it come to fruition.

I am thrilled that Aliona finally achieved her goal of an Olympic gold medal, and kudos to Bruno for being a great partner. He has improved by leaps and bounds since they started to skate together. I love the interesting choreography in their program and the strength moves by Bruno.

Sui and Han had a wonderful, passionate program. She is such a boss! I'm always impressed with how strong their pairs elements are, given their lack of height difference (which was made especially clear when the medallists were standing together). It was hard to see her disappointment, but I am sure that they will come back fighting. This is a huge accomplishment, given her serious, potentially career-ending health issues in the not too distant past.

I'm also thrilled for Meagan and Eric, who have been complete heroes this Olympics, skating four excellent programs in a row. They are always pushing the technical envelope, but tonight, I also felt a wonderfully elevated sense of performance and togetherness. Congratulations on being the first team to land a throw quad at the Olympics - What an achievement! :) (Are they also the first skater/s to win an Olympic medal skating to music that contains a curse word, out of curiosity?) I love the yin and yang of this pair - It makes them so special. Meagan's unbridled enthusiasm and absolute love for the sport are so endearing. I loved her reaction to Mirai's 3A, as well as her interactions with Aliona.

I wish Tarasova and Morosov the best going forward. Their disappointment was also hard to witness. They have wonderful skating skills and elements. I hope that they will receive programs in the future that will match their level of talent.

Well done to Julianne and Charlie, as well as Kirsten and Michael! Both teams should be very proud of how they skated at these games. I see bright things in their futures! :)

I was commenting on the fact that you thought the judging was as simple and clean as you thought it was not whether the judging was lovely. Controversies don't happen because there's not enough cameras but more like politicking and bribing behind stage. Also there's nothing realistically impossible about final tweaking of scores for a convenient margin to win. I too have better things to do than argue with someone accusing people of nationalism and xenophobia.

Glad the top two teams are going to Worlds. What is Aliona planning for the future? I'm almost for two gold medals when the point spread is less than 1. Also, as much as I enjoy the short programs, I wouldn't object to their being done away with.

I only post on here once in a blue moon, and haven't read all so don't know if this has been addressed, but to the person who said NBC only showed the last 6 pairs: NBCSN! NBC Sports Network. They come on early with Tanith White and Scott Hamilton with features and all the early skates. Then switch over to NBC for the last few.

I really enjoy Tanith's commentary. Scott is the same old Scott, lots of heart, but also LOTS OF WORDS. They did a short feature last night on Gordeeva and Grinkov that made me cry. His daughter made Scott comment, "She ain't got no mother." She is the spitting image of him.

Someone wrote Aljona and Bruno plan for another 2 seasons.

Just watched the medal ceremony.

All they get is a white tiger plush toy. Where is the medal? Is it hidden inside the tiger?
