Oh well done to the Japanese, fingers crossed this gets more pairs happening in Japan. Nice.

It would make the team event worth-while at least. It's so dumb to have a team event when it's just USA-Bronze and then just juggling between Russian/Canada for Gold - and not because they are just so exceptional among great competitors - but because Japan or Italy or China just can't field anybody in a few categories.

1) The other medal contenders were more awful than the awful Canadian.

2) Nobody has won the Gold Medal yet.

Therefore the conclusion about the event structure is moot.

You don't seem to be getting the point. The SP should not be way more important than the LP, that's the exact opposite of how the events are supposed to be weighted. Beyond that, the other guys did not skate so much more worse than Chan. They all did very poorly and a result like this should not skew the event so drastically.

And yes the Gold medal is close to decided already because of the structure of the event - the strongest skaters from other countries sitting out (which means these teams are not a representation of the best from their countries, which is what a team event is supposed to showcase - you don't see gymnasts just sitting out from their team events) and the other events almost surely will not having the kind placement difference we saw here. Virtue/Moir will win in Dance even if they make a significant mistake, since their competition is absent, and the Pairs will have an advantage because of China not bringing their best.
