2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 3

IMO Zagitova skates amazingly. I forgive the backloading because the section where she does most of her jumps, in the ballet, the entire piece of music of choreographed as a display of sheer technicality (male dancers do a whole series of seriously impressive jumps and Kitri follows with as many fouettés as she possibly can). So for me, it fits and actually does balance out with the music. But not everyone is familiar with the ballet so I see why it can annoy people. The fact they use this to also gain extra marks doesn’t bother me.

I, on the other hand, hate the beginning of Nagasu’s programme which to me looks like laps of very few steps that lead up to a jump (except that absolutely mega axel today. Stunning.). I despise front loading because for me that kills the excitement of the programme without displaying much skating skill through footwork for over half the programme, and then all the choreography and performance is crammed into the final minute of steps, choreo and 2 spins.

It does always make me think though that whenever people say ‘it’s just killing time’ that they probably just can’t be bothered to pay attention to anything that’s not a spin or a jump, and that irritates me, even when I do it myself.

But enough complaining, that was an absolutely stellar competition so a huge well done to all the athletes and thank you so much for that calibre of competition. All clean, all skated amazingly, some personal bests, and a really exciting time to look forwards to next week!

If Evgenia's PCS is 5 points higher than Alina's in the SP ... Then the GOE + BV for Alina's jump's in the SP should be 5 points higher. Let's keep it real, Evgenia's jumps DO NOT compare to Alina's.

I DON'T CARE if Alina win in tes or win because of tes but the way her pcs rise makes it impossible for other who have miles better artistry than her to complete with her.

And to be honest some of her GOEs is over-scored too, from her score it seems like she jump like Hanyu.......

Her spin is always excellent though.

Kurt Browning just brought up a good question: what happens if someone withdraws (last-minute) from the team event? How will the points be calculated?

There's no way to make two minutes of non-jumping interesting...but it's still the most optimal strategy.

I'd be very surprised if the ISU doesn't make big changes after this season finishes up.

It'll be very hypocritical if they do

Because right now all of their judges are totally rewarding it and not deducting any PCS
for program balance

I'm really sad the Shibutanis are doing both segments. I hate that Chock and Bates or Hubbell and Donohue didn't get a chance at the team medal since they both have outscored the Shibutanis in the FD, plus H/D are the national champs. I know people wanted Mirai to get a medal, but I really don't get why they swapped out the ladies and not dance.

Yes, happy for Mirai but so sad for the dance teams. They all deserve medals. I hope the shibs perform well here. They have been messing up their long programs recently and they look nervous and less energetic than usual in their short.

Yeah, usually skaters don't invite those comparisons by not keeping junior programs in their senior debuts ;)

usually people that don't follow junior skating is not aware that a lot of junior programs is a way better than what we see at the senior level.
and there is skaters with PCS in the high 50s who is more artistic than a senior 70+ PCS queens
