2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

Maybe Ross getting on the podium tonight was the USFS judging panel trying to redirect the sport back to less of an emphasis on the TES and quads. Ross did the best with what he had. They should never have changed the criteria for selection to the Olympic team, then there wouldn't be all of this chaotic discussion.

They changed it for a reason. It is the better way to make the decision when the field is so deep. A clean performance one time can not be ensured to repeat. We have seen that time and time again.

I will be torn over whoever to be left out of the Olympic team, but I think it should be Nathan, Ross, and Vincent as following the placement order although I really wish Adam to make it to Olympics. It will be very illogical to think of Ross, the silver medalist at Nationals not making it to Olympics over the bronze and pewter medalists. Had he have placed third, I would've argued the body of work criteria for Adam's sake, but it isn't. Ross is not known for his consistency, so it will be risky that USA has two skaters; Ross and Adam whose strength lie on more performing sides than TES. Vincent is a future of US men and is capable of multiple quads including difficult 4lutz and 4flip, so I think he should be given an opportunity to experience the Olympics.
Absolutely!!!!

it shouldn't have been IMO, just as it shouldn't be now. polina had zero senior international experience and ross hasn't done well in a couple years.

But that's not the way the USFSA saw it and it's their opinion that counts.

I do think it makes the most sense to send Nathan, Adam, Vincent. I just think the PR would be terrible if they didn't send the silver medalist. I've been kind of wanting before the competition even started to go with Nathan, Adam and Vincent. But I'm just not sure it can be done. If they did what the US women's artistic gymnastics program did and just made it super clear that nats and Olympic trials don't officially decide anything, USFSA could easily just put whoever they wanted on the team for any reason. That's what they should do. There are always fluke good and bad performances. I think even in race sports like swimming and track a committee should just take the team they think has the potential for the best results.

But USFSA tries to have it both ways by making a BIG DEAL out of the nationals and then having a selection committee instead of just taking the top finishers. It's really screwing them and I think they need to settle on one method or another of choosing teams.

Absolutely gutted for Jason. :sad21: All my favorites seem cursed this season.

I hope they send Nathan, Ross, and Adam. Vincent has the quad-ful base values, but I find his overall skating so sloppy.

THat makes no sense whatsoever. It certainly isn't among the criteria. She was selected on the strength of her silver medal at Nationals. Ross should be, too.
(Not saying that it's part of the criteria. Also, not saying that it's fair.)

However, I think it's a matter of perception and makes sense. First of all, Ross has the baggage of a lacklustre career. Polina had a clean slate. So, he looks like a fluke, while she looked like a future hopeful.

Also, from the point of view of storylines, NBC was already building one for Polina with her Russian heritage. No such thing happening for Ross. I think that that plays a part in the Olympic selection.

THIS. i completely agree, they make nationals such a big deal and make it look like its the most important/sole competition for deciding who goes to the olympics when that's not how it works. i support the body of work criteria and if they keep the rules this way then they need to make it more clear on what the process really consists of.

Was looking forward to Nathan's new costumes and somehow I expected more =)

I wish these new costumes would grow some more feathers or sequins cause currently they look a bit too basic. Both SP and LP costumes are also not so related to his music theme too. Anyway, still I am happy he won.

That said, I am also glad that at least no one got injured in this competition.

Holy moly! What da.... ? I thought I woke up in alternated universe.

I love Ross BTW. But still...I need to go and watch all of them. :scard7:

He has won Grand Prix medals and has medaled at 4CC. Those won't count for this year but his tier 1 silver medal should be enough. Adam has nothing at tier 1.

Where are you coming up with this tier 1 stuff? Ross Miner won one GP bronze at Rostelecom Cup in 2015-16. In NHK trophy, he won a bronze in 11-12 and 12-13. That is 3 bronzes and none in 16-17. Adam won a silver medal this season at Skate America and a silver medal at NHK this season and made the GPF this season and last season. To me international competition would be Tier 1 and Nationals would be Tier 2.

It's hard to not give Ross a spot - he was the first qualifier behind Nathan. He basically did what any one of the guys could have optimally expected to do with Nathan competing.

But I'm for Nathan, Adam and Ross.

Although the irony of Rippon over Zhou and pulling the same thing his bestie Ashley did over Mirai in 2014 would be incredible.

The US Olympic committee considers Nationals a Tier 1 competition. Considering international competitions are a totally different beast, I think this is silly, but Jenaj didn't just make it up.

Nationals is part of the body of work. People forget, or don't understand, that.

Also I wanna cross reference everyone who says Ross shouldn't be on the team or Rippon should be on the team with those who flayed Ashley. :p (yes, I know it's not the same lol)

I think Vincent was going for a place on that team and he gave it everything he had and got a very high technical score. Adam imploded which is worse. Sorry but I am a Vincent fan... if only he would have landed that triple axle in the short program

Ross has no business going to the Olympics. His programs are dated and cheesy. Nathan, Vincent and Adam should go. Jason had a terrible season and I blame his coaching situation for that although I know he would never blame them. Men’s figure skating in the US just got a little less interesting with Jason’s not making the team :slink:

Agreed! I loved his outfit for his SP last year with the lace. Nathan doesnt seem the type to go all out with sequins but what he wore at nationals this year seem kinda like fancy tracksuits. Maybe it’ll look nicer and more of a complete look when his hair grows back to its curly glory.
