2018 US Championships Sr Men SP

The others definitely have better SS than Rippon. But Zhou?? Come on. He is getting better but elegant and refined are not words I would use to define him. But, I agree that Zhou's and Adam's basic SS are at about the same level (Ashley's SS are better than this.. not the best but better than those two). The difference is the performance quality and musical interpretation. He does every movement with pizazz and his upper body movements are among the best in the world. And, he performed a perfectly clean program with beautiful spins. You might not like this program ( I don't) but he sells the hell out of it.

Rippon's skating imho was wonderful and the second program behind Grant but Rippon was clean as a whistle without a quad. Brown should have been a bit lower (proportionately because we all know overscoring or inflation is expected at U S nats before the Olympics especially with th eoy favorite here -
Chen.

As far as Nathan's costume, it is not finished.

Vera Wang did not have enough white stripes to make the ribs, pelvic bone, femurs, tibia and fibulas.

I know right? Do you watch his programs? I mean, I agree that when he is going for a crazy number of Quads his transitions probably suffer. At 4 continents last year, for example, I was not impressed. But, in comparison to the other Quad kings, his transitions are impressive.

I honestly don't understand all the hype around Rippon. Maybe if that's the skating style you prefer, sure. His style is not my cup of tea, and he is not competitive with top men who have quads. He's like a male version of Ashley that skates around looking like a diva. Not fair to skaters like Chen, (and now most recently) Zhou and internationally Hanyu, Shoma who skate their butts of trying to push the limits of the sport while still remaining elegant and refined.

Actually, you need to see him live to appreciate him. His skating quality is way above Ashley's and I say that with love for both.

I totally agree - something emotionally gripping about Grant but I am sorry Nathan and that costume = no no no. He is a great jumper but he is not an artist; if he is an artist than Osmond is a master artist and Tennell is Michelle Kwan already. Nathan is working on his pcs but watch his feet - those are not edges of beauty. He is not horrible but he just is over marked or over regarded.

Tennell is Michelle Kwan already? HAHAHAHAHA NO.

Thoughts:

Nathan: I do not really like his costume. He has a chance to go down in history as the best American male skater of all time. Is he already?
Adam: Put his money where his mouth is. Teared up seeing Raf shimmy in the kiss and cry and say gleefully "I enjoyed it!"
Jason: Who did Kori pay off on the technical panel?
Vincent: I could see him moving into the top 3 in the long with his 5 quads.
Jimmy Ma: Yes sir.
Max: Sad.

His program isn't calling for elegance (although I think he is quite elegant nevertheless). Javier's Black Betty SP and Hanyu's Let's Get Crazy SP aren't exactly "elegant" either -- the music lends itself to a program that is edgy and entertaining, not flowy and pretty. You want elegant and refined -- well, watch his FS when his music calls for that.

As for saying he's not competitive with the top men who have quads... well, his qualifying for the GPF (with 2 GP silvers) -- say otherwise. He's also beaten skaters like Jin, Chen, Voronov, Uno, Aaron who are all highly competitive quadsters, on the basis of his overall quality of skating. He has excellent spins, and his performance/projection/confidence is practically unmatched. Only he can pull off the programs he does because you need to have a certain level of attitude and commitment and panache/personality - which 99% of the men don't have. And yes, that's why it works for Ashley as well - most of the ladies don't have her sass and confidence which is something that is a crowd pleaser and distinguishes her from skaters who are trying to fit the mold of pretty elegant/refined/ice princess/ballerina/etc. types.

Adam's SP is a perfect example of a skater embracing who he is, instead of trying to pander to the judges. Of course some people don't understand it, because they don't understand him... which is totally fine. But asking him to be something he's not, or holding it against him for being who he is, isn't exactly open-minded.

While not exactly technically so, I think he IS pushing the limits of the sport. A sport that says you have to skate classically, that says men can't do laybacks, and have to exude hypermasculinity, and you can't be a showman during competition.

A lot of people attribute the sass to hiding flaws. You can have KWEEN arms and still have good quality, but some people don’t recognize that. His upper body movement is used as a addition, NOT a distraction.

Oh my - did Max Aaron even make the second final group? The crowning of Chen is not in doubt. The judges seem to be propping up Jason a bit - I would have had him in fourth but he is close enough with his generous scores to pass Rippon fairly easily. Vincent doesn't look quite redy for the team and the judges will hold down Grant no matter what. I think the big issue is can Grant put pressure on the judges to put him on the team and can Adam not fall apart. Chen has it in the bag.

:laugh2: Da, you rock! I like Nathan, but can't love the costume that Vera designed.

I am distressed by Nathan's haircut and costume

This.
My mom said she could have designed a better costume. I must say I'm disappointed Vera Wang I mean when I heard she was design his costumes as I thought they be exquisite meh. Hopefully his costume for the free skate will be better. My mom also said she wanted Nathan's hair back.

The Vera Wang hype was definitely OVERhype.

I don’t really care one way or the other but I’m glad it isn’t some frilly ruffled glittery nightmare.

Maybe he’s taking the Scott Hamilton approach to his Olympic costumes.

My favorite of the night was Grant Hochstein. I think he should have been ahead of Adam and Jason.

I  even more that she's standing up for herself, with words, eloquent and on point. Way to go, Gracie. I really admire that she's present, cheering for her friends, and sharing herself via social media. This way she doesn't have to sink into regret at not competing herself. Brava, brave girl.

I love what she was said to Dave. Dave tweets, all he ever wanted was to see the real Gracie Gold. She replied, all I ever wanted as an apology from you. And he apologized, sorta...

Nathan cutting his hair just took about 4 years off his look. He needs to exude maturity to compete on the same level as the top 3-4 men, and his New ‘do, just doesn’t.
