2018 Worlds Ladies FS

Osmond smiled ... that's all. It's not like she was 'celebrating' in Alina's face or anything like that.

So, should she have been sad at that moment? Please ... tell us how you'd be feeling if you were in Osmond's shoes (err... skates) at that moment??

It looked like she was celebrating at least to me.

Zhenya is the leader of that team she's the person the younger skaters look up to the most not the coach and I bet Medvedeva has already been in contact with Alina to console her. I'm glad Russia gets the keep the three spots because if they didn't Alina would feel even worse. it's time for her to have a real vacation and for her to get to know her new Akita dog. ;)
Medvedeva is all class. She would never gloat over one of her teammates and friends' bad luck. It is a real shame that she could not have competed at worlds.

Come on ... the girl doesn't have a mean bone in her body!

And even IF she was celebrating (which she was NOT), it would have been a celebration about her performance and her securing a higher podium placement; and NOT any kind of celebration for an unfortunate skate by another competitor!

1. She had a very straight face on until she noticed the camera, then smiled and waved for the camera.

2. She just defended her silver medal at worlds at worst or won the world championship if lucky. She had EVERY right to celebrate.

please tell me what you would do if you just realized that you're now at least a worlds silver medalist.

Also, Kaetlyn is generally a happy person, often smiling. She's also someone who's often surprised by her own successes, which I'm sure is the case here.

And, it's possible to be concerned and empathetic for someone else while simultaneously being happy about your own accomplishments and performances.

Has there ever been a World Champion that was as basic as Kaetlyn?

She really doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table.

Meissner? Yuka Sato kind of (she was lovely but won Worlds only because the field was so weak).

Even Medvedeva.

Well, to me she looked like she had a neutral face, then smiled and waved at the camera. That to me is a completely separate interaction from celebration ... That's something a random audience member could do for example, for no other reason but just to smile and wave at the camera.

First, commenting that a few thing had to go right for the winner to win doesn't subtract from the accomplishment, but it is realistic. In other sports, it's called an upset. In college b-ball, it's been called the 'year of upsets' because so many top seeds are falling. Upsets are a part of sport. This is the only sport that doesn't know what to do with upsets. The best athletes on paper don't always deliver when it counts.

A lot is made of faulty placements in this sport. I understand Carolina being placed a little higher than she deserves because of the home ice advantage thing. Idon't know about radie deserving the Bronze, but I do think she should have had a top 5 finish.

Cindy maybe you are new here but what I've commented on isn't new. It happens every time a Canadian skater is successful. Another recent example is after the Team Event.

It's cool to share your thoughts on how to improve skating. Or suggest improvements for a skater. That's what constructive criticism is all about. It gets dull after a while when one nationality is singled out and commented upon negatively repeatedly.

I joined this forum partly because of this kind of situation.

I would not say anything if the posters who go about this were dealt with as Canadian posters who step out of line are. Myself included. But even after consultations it doesn't seem to be happening.

Being a bystander is no better than being a bully. Which is why I speak up.

I will continue to celebrate the successes of the ladies who competed here. This was a monumental event for Japanese ladies and should be a positive omen for next season.

I can give supporting evidence for the current scores, with perhaps deflation across the board, but certainly keeping the same results.

Then do it, give your exact scores - with reasoning - that you think each skater should have deserved for GOE, PCS, and tech calls, and I will discuss why I think you're wrong. From there we (the community as a whole) can determine who is most correct. These conversations are what dictate how things should be valued and what the rules and general perceptions should be.

I've never in all my years of watching Sport not seen an athlete smile and celebrate a Gold. Other athletes making mistakes has never stopped a winner celebrating. It's a bizarre, exceptional standard to hold Osmond to. Figure skating fans are so negative in compared to Artistic Gymnastics, jeez.

I do have a Cad flag under my name, but I am not a biased person. I've never been overly patriotic as I believe it gets in the way of fairness and rational thinking so don't assume that's why I am defending Osmond here.

I know that if the places were switched and Alina was in Kaetlys place, as she was many times before, do you think that she would have given a rat’s tail for how Kaetlyn was feeling. Do you think that when Alina won the Olympic Gold that she was crying over Kaetlyns loss. Because Kaetly was smiling as she always is, she is bad and non caring person. Why wouldn’t she celebrate, she knew then that she was on the podium. If Kaetlyn went to the Kiss and Cry and threw herself all over Alina, she would be preserved as fake and crying crocodile tears. In some people’s eyes, whatever Katelyn does is terrible. You can’t talk about her losing so therefor you talk about how she acts when she wins....Go Figure..It’s time someone stood up for her and accept the consequences.🙂🙂🙂🙂.....Talking about class and being real, Kaetlyn all the way."...first class. Bambi found her legs when it counted most....

Yeah. However, it seems like for every little thing that's said, there's someone that gets insulted. There seem to be those that are permanently, professionally offended. At some point, you have to get exhausted. Heck, I get exhausted just reading it. Also, it makes rational discussion of issues like overscoring or the way the UR deduction is applied inconsistently across skaters hard. I think the best part of her win is that she's not Russian. Some people make those comments because of diehard fandom blinds them to anything else.

You'll be happy to know:

I was very happy for Olympics pair and Ladies bronze
I was very very happy for Canada winning Olympics Team Event
I'll always be sad Chan never fulfilled his potential in erms of medals, and it's likely I'll never see anything like him in the rest of my life

Also

I was over the moon for Virtue and Moir victory.
I do believe that the French underperformed both evenings because of the costume debacle, but at the same time I consider costumes, like anything else, skaters' responsability: it wasn't bad luck, it was fault.
Virtue and Moir have a chemistry like no one else, which allows them to not rip costumes, performe under pressure, win against odds and thrill crowds.
To build the relationship along with the skating was smart and created something that has no parallel at least in current skaters.
The only distant relatives I see in terms of chemistry and understanding between each other are Tarasova and Morozov.

And finally, I'm also bummed I didn't get to appreciate the best version of the Lady Canadian champion, cause she's a kicker.

theres some part of me thinking zagitovas team could have handled the pressure she's been in way better. it's not a good sign to even tell the media you are feeling lots of pressure. your team has to prepare you for these moments and cool you down and this is where i think they did a really bad job with zagitova.

Yes!
She's fifteen: a child in your care.
She's telling the world she's feeling pressure, it's I would say even legally your job to at least try and fix that.
Did they?

I'm very sorry for Alina.
So, so far, is Yagudin still the only one winning GP Final, Euros, Olympics and Worlds in the same saeson?

I think the best part of her win is that she's not Russian.
Cindy1983, did you think of substituting "Russian" with "black", for example? What would be the reaction then? I'm really curious to learn what you meant by writing that and why you considered that acceptable.
