2020 World Championships Cancelled

I have changed the title to "Postponed" as that is what is currently on the ISU site. Here's holding out for a small miracle!

I think it’s cancelled? , April would have been ideal or possibly early May, but by them most countries will be in the “delay” phase of the virus...skaters will be working on programs for next season and holding 2 world championships within a season would be too much...

It’s likely that placements for the GP series will be based on this seasons results, Europeans and 4cc..

Why or why didn’t Quebec with the isu brought the championships to start of March is beyond me...after the WHO callled it a “pandemic” yesterday we all in the skating community knew it would be curtains....

Plus in mid April, hopefully the virus scare will have been largely toned down by then.

Unlikely by then, or even 3-4 months later, given the current state of infection vs. prevention which don't really inspire any kind of optimism. This may be the exact reason why a reschedule before October is ruled out as for now.

It might even happen that for some skaters, training camps are cancelled, or everyday on-ice training is disrupted. This already happened to Chinese skaters back home from 4CC, with their home rinks closed and self-quarantine at home required.

Exactly, many governments are taking draconic measures in trying to contain the virus, imposing travel restrictions, meeting restrictions, all to ensure the public health care systems don't crumble when 10 of percents of the population get seriously ill. Wether warranted or not, all sports are going to suffer.

Our government has just concluded an emergency meeting and advised (not yet ordered/decreed, things don't work like that in The Netherlands) all public meetings over 100 people (including the parliament in session), working from home, avoiding public transport, etc etc. All concerts, theaters, museums, amusement parcs, matches, churches are to be closed. Schools are still advised to stay open, otherwise there would be total disruption of working parent's life's.

All of our first world countries have a reasonable public health care system, save perhaps for the USA, where a lot of poor and even working class are uninsured. And the first elected official and his supporters have their own agenda against the poor, unemployed, and otherwise undesirable.

Just wait till the virus hits Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other such poor, overcrowded, polluted, corrupted nations.

Oh no, I just looked at the article. it says the rescheduled WC won't be possible any time before October 2020 :eekn: How will that be possible????? That will already be into 2020-2021 season!!!! Are they out of their minds????:palmf:

Exactly my thoughts. There is some confusion as other events show "Cancelled" while Worlds shows "Postponed" on the Events page. Will shoot them an email.

For all bored/stressed/isolated/quarantined/hospitalized - today's 9 hours of Russian Novice Championships (b. 2007+), Girls, Elements - Jumps. :)

They are divided in two group: younger (2009+) and older (b. 2007-08), starts with younger.
Three jumping passes, single and combo, best score counts. 'Bigger' names participating: Veronika Zhilina, Adelya Petrosyan, Elizaveta Berestovskaya.

Keep calm, get well, support and pray for each other!

Probably not a good idea to get caught up in hypotheticals now. The US has a track record of being able to catch up after being behind during a crisis. Once the testing becomes more available and logistically viable I have no doubt they will implement them on the largest scale possible to as many as they possibly can. It may take a little extra time to catch up but freaking out and possibly causing panic and stress among people is of little help.

Absolutely! Look how quickly we mobilized our industrial capacity when we got into WWII. I know that's going back a long way, and we've changed a lot since then, but don't underestimate the US's resources and ability for action once we get our act together. We're so used to floundering around in our usual patterns of political polarization, obstruction and inaction, but a crisis will get us moving. It's very scary, but don't underestimate the capacity of US business, military and government to come together and help the hospital systems rise to the challenge - if it comes to that. Very worried for everyone around the world as we come to terms with this threat. Be careful out there.

Wouldn't it be nice if some skaters recorded and posted a clean run through of their programs for fans? Just to show off those programs one last time and fans everywhere can see the finished product as we would have seen it in Montreal...

I don't think it is good to blame any country or group of people. However, it is interesting that most new viruses come out of China and not other countries with high populations and close proximity to animals (i.e. India). I would imagine wildlife markets are a big part of the reason this occurs. Hopefully, people will decide for themselves ( without authoritarian force) that these types of markets just aren't a good idea. They are bad for wildlife populations and for human health.
.
Its not just China. While we dont know the exact mechanism, with Ebola and SARS, people eating bushmeat is the common denominator. You really dont want to eat a fruit bat or a monkey. While these virusus are very different, the common deminator is bushmeat.

Of course , in the US, in 1918, if you put fowl, pigs and humans in close proximity, you get the same end result. Lots of mortality.
We need to be smarter than we have been.

"Hypotheticals"? Are you kidding me?
There are 1390 cases and 289 virus victims in US at the moment. Free testing and hospital isolation should have been introduced weeks ago already.

Sorry, I don't quite understand your system.
Let's say you don't have insurance, get severe flu symptoms: feel sick, high temperature, etc..
You don't have money for private medical visit, so you go to an emergency in nearest hospital and what happens there?

Don't feel bad, none of us understand the system either. But if that happens, you pay for everything out of pocket, just like you would if you went for a "private medical visit," by which I think you mean going to see your usual doctor (which you might not even have, if you're uninsured or underinsured). Everything. E-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. So if you do the month in ICU stay that a lot of coronavirus victims have, you're looking at well over $100,000. That number could be wildly incorrect though, because it's impossible to find accurate numbers online and you won't find out how much anything is until you get the bill. Even if you have insurance, there's often rules that govern how much the insurer will pay (like ours I think only pays 50% of costs over xyz amount) so you're on the hook for much of the cost anyway. You might be lucky and be able to negotiate it down a bit with the providers and pay it off over decades, or you might not, and go into bankruptcy.

I don't want to derail the thread so I'll leave it there, but it's one of the reasons why I'm pessimistic about the spread in the US. Up till recently, the test alone was $3,000 and insurance refused to cover it, although I hear insurers are saying they'll cover the test now. I'll believe it when I see it.

But we'll see how things play out.

A head start???? We didn’t even have test kits.

We have the kits...we dont have the labs..and we have way too much buracracy.... we need drive up tests on demand...like Korea. Hurrah for Bill and Malinda Gates for working on kits you can use at home.
If we all do our part to flatten the curve, there will be way more respirators available to keep us old people alive at any given time....let this spike like Italy and it matters not how good the system is...no beds, no respirators, they have to decide who lives and who dies....imagine being an Italian doctor working your heart out and being told that....put the old people outside in tents in the parking lot....wartime triage.....:sad46:

Wow, it doesn't look good as for encouraging people to report/test/isolate/hospitalize suspicious infections.

Fantastic idea!

I think it comes under the heading of wishfully thinking.... a dream within a dream.

I think it would have been best to go ahead and have it without an audience. Postponing it will create all kinds of problems for the skaters. Cancel; don't postpone.

Trusova posted her clean run through, though not in a costume. Though tbh most of them are caught in the travelling problems likely atm.

I was able cancel one hotel, and the rest have to be done over the phone, and you can imagine how that’s going...

The giy who does the On Ice Perspectives instagram channel just uploaded the recent Japanese TV footage of his Yuzu practice (Parisian Walkways for the SC gala this year) and mentioned "In an ironic way, this video makes me imagine what a competition would feel like if there was no audience... "

Of course I doubt we'd get that flying camera work, but other than that... is this what we imagine a closed door would have been like? With the right skaters, yes it would be interesting...

Air Canada is not taking any calls for flights less than 48 hours away today. And their website is a nightmare - I've seen people on Twitter who tried to cancel are getting measly refunds and not the full amount they paid - they are supposed to be able to use the full amount towards another booking. I can't even get my reservation to load at the moment. I tried DMing them on Twitter, but I doubt I'll get a response.

On the plus side, evenko sent out their email about refunds, which I received.
