But most of them have the Sputnik vaccine, which I do not believe is accepted in Canada. I think that’s why the rest of them came so early.
Yeah Sputnik doesn't qualify for the vaccinated traveler exception. However, I'm pretty sure Daria, Sasha, and Kseniia all said they weren't vaccinated so I would be surprised if any of the others are. I don't think Russia is vaccinating under 18 anyway so it's kinda a moot point (although someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Sometimes I just don't understand how the ISU works.

I would expect, that since the assignments were decided for the GPs in JUNE, that the ISU had continuous contact with each federation that host the GPs, and was making sure that everything will work out smoothly for everyone.

I would also expect that those host federations would have countinuous contact with their respective governments to check that all rules are fulfilled regaring the pandemic, and also report back to the ISU if there would be potential questionmarks and obstacles.

Did I expect too much?

I agree, I don't think jumps should affect PCS but if we look at Yelim and Amber too, neither of them skate slow but the jumps weren't quite there and so their PCS is 4 to 5 points behind the top skaters. Especially Amber, she was clean as a whistle on the protocol and her performance was emotional but her BV was significantly lower than any non-American.
It makes no sense the way PCS is judged that is the life raft for artistic and musical skaters.

I'm pretty sure Liza is, I think I remember seeing that she and Mishin went and got vaccinated together. But she's obviously over 18, so she's probably the only one.

Will Kamila be at SC or not???!!!

Omg that's all I'm interested in right now!!!!!! Arghhhhh!!!!!

***

On another note CONGRATS SASHA!!!!! So proud of her!!!!! She settled for one quad and won easily!!!!! Haha I'm especially proud that she agreed to go with one quad. I think it's a big ask for her (to make peace with less quads) so this is a great start to her Olympic bid!!!!!!!

I don't think that's the responsibility of host federations. I think that's the responsibility of visiting federations to ensure you can comply and take into account the necessary time to fulfill them. Even before the pandemic, Russia had visa problems entering countries. I'm not sure you can just blame the pandemic.

For example, NHL players know they can't play in Canada without being vaccinated (due to quarantine). They lose out on salary for the games they aren't able to play. It's their responsibility and their teams to ensure everyone is vaccinated (in order to be able to play) as NHL teams can't afford to have a roster spot for someone who can't play a significant chunk of games. (That's why there are like 4 NHL players who aren't vaccinated.)

It's not just a pandemic thing though. When you travel to any country, you need to make sure your documents are in order. Needing vaccines to travel isn't a new thing either.

I mean Canada JUST opened it's borders to vaccinated travellers last month and you still need a negative test. This certainly isn't new..

I wouldn't be surprised if Canada as a country is having visa troubles, but Russia is the only country feeling it, because they're basically the largest country represented at SC that isn't visa exempt (besides China and Georgia). Unless skaters need work visas to compete in foreign countries, which I'm not sure about.

And what does that have to do with PCS (you know, skating skills, performance, composition and the likes)? Exactly! Nothing whatsoever. Everyone knows Satoko is not a technical skater at all and should be dinged on the majority of her triples but that doesn’t mean she shouldn‘t be rewarded for her qualities in PCS. So, your comment makes no sense, sorry.

Anyway, this is the Russian women‘s thread, so I‘ll just leave it at that.
She got over 8.5 for everything so she was rewarded.

And you didn’t offer a counterpoint to my comment as to why you need to have all time great step sequences when they are worth a lot less. The people that would “embarrass” themselves trying them have figured out they don’t need them to win.

If those step sequences were worth more points as jumps, Eteri and the Russian fed would start recruiting skaters who could do that.

People keep forgetting that Russia train their skaters for maximum points. They don‘t focus on step sequences because points and strategy wise, it’s not an efficient use of time.

Yes, and I forget that Interpretation and Composition are only 2 out of 5 elements in PCS. I think Kseniia is top notch here. But looking at the scores, she is still judged 8th on those two components...
I quite agree she was scored too low . Didn't surprise me though!!

Of the ISU - Yes.

Well I would hope the Russian Fed/Olympic committee (whatever the top org is, not just regarding figure skating but any sport where they are sending athletes as representatives of Russia) would have had some common sense about them and purchased some EU approved vaccines for their athletes to make traveling for competitions easier.

I believe someone on here has said Shcherbakova alluded in an interview she couldn't get vaccinated yet because she's had covid - there's some vaccines that say you shouldn't get vaccinated within x amount of time of having the virus.

I think I can agree on that. But I see it the optimistic way way that it keeps promises for the further competitions ;)
Also when you realize that in fact all three have injuries/are recovering from injuries, then their performances look even better.
True about the three Russian ladies having dealt with injuries and skating a pretty high-quality is a good sign

Daria Usacheva has a masterpiece SP at skate america, I don't know how many times, I watch it, but I like this program so much for her.
But, why her team give her this awful FS. Unlike her SP, Daria doesn't feel anything about the FS music.
Could they give her a new FS ? This girl deserve a masterpiece SP and FS, not just the SP.
For the moment, I will continue to watch her beautiful SP and hope that her team change the FS music. Daria deserve better !

They did call people's Lz's and F's though..

I think it also hurt Kseniia going after Young and Kaori though. She doesn't have their power or speed or performance or energy and it was noticeable. She was much more hesitant (even discounting jumps) and that affected her performance. She's a beautiful skater but she doesn't have better skating skills than Kaori either. In addition, while she's a beautiful skater, she isn't Satoko who is elegant and stunning and whose performance and interpretation transcends her jumps. (If anything, both Kaori and Satoko's PCS were too low.)
Their scores are not low. Sakamoto is at most a 70 skater like today and Miyahara with her UR's and tech would never get to smell her 75 ceiling. Ksenia meanwhile is the type that should go over 70+ no problem but judges are scoring like her like some second rate junior skater. Girl needs to move somewhere that can politic for her. How in the world can they give her 10 points less in PCS than Tuktamysheva.

They are trying hard for the GPF to not be an all Russian affair. Just look at what they did to the JGPF qualifiers. Some low rated competitors got in because of JGP France refusing to admit Russian skaters. If this happens they better make total score the qualifying criteria. Honestly this should be the main criteria Covid or not.

Lol, we all know that neither Skate Canada nor the ISU are competent enough to pull off such a conspiracy.

It seems to me that the ISU only consists of members just saying - yes, yes, hai, hai, oui, oui, ja, ja, si, si, da, da

A group of "experts" from each federation that are too busy in admiring each other than to actually DO something...

These GP competitions that plan on politicizing their events should have their hosting rights taken away. There are countries that are far more flexible and amiable to visiting athletes whether to friendly countries or not. This malicious and bias treatment should end. Frankly all the delay is already a red flag. If the Russians don't show up in SC then I don't want those Canadians to host another GP or WC event ever.
