It's ironic, how people in Western countries were OK with Serena Williams winning everything (or almost everything) during many years. And now some other people in Western countries are not happy with Russian skaters winning everything. One can easily see it on this board. My biggest concern is about introducing measures that have nothing to do with fair play: ban the quads, increase the senior age to 20 years, introduce "artistic" programs, keep Russian skaters off competitions, etc.
Serena had and has plenty of detractors who were not happy with her success. She faced an undue amount of racism and sexism.

Consider also the until recent dominance of Simone Biles and the American gymnastics team. There were/are plenty of detractors there too.
Also, gymnastics has undergone a number of the same questions - open ended code, difficulty vs execution, power vs artistic athletes, questions of raising the senior age, and the rise to dominance (and in some cases subsequent decline) of various countries.

It's not unique to figure skating and it certainly isn't the result of some vendetta against Russian athletes. It's quite a stretch to imagine it must be. First of all, questions of difficulty (quads/3As) certainly aren't new. That's why the junior rules currently exist. The dichotomy between technical content and artistry has existed long before now. Nor are Russian skaters alone in advancing the technical content - Rika was the first to land 8 clean triples in a FS.

Furthermore, NO ONE is trying to keep Russian skaters from competitions. It's a global pandemic and each country is sovereign and as such is allowed to set in place whatever regulations they see fit in order to protect their citizens. No one is entitled to visit another country or to assume a sporting event is automatically exempt from such restrictions. If a country wishes to relax regulations and grant exceptions that is their prerogative. Furthermore, there is no evidence that anyone is trying to keep Russian skaters from competitions. When juniors weren't able to attend the first two grand prixs they allowed them extra entries into the second. When Russia had visa problems, they allowed them their own practice session to better accommodate their arrival time and jet lag. Finally, it's not like going to international figure skating events is a right. Other countries, being impacted by the pandemic and taking into account quarantine, etc. have merely decided not to send their skaters, which is unfortunate especially for Japan junior skaters and Chinese skaters but it's due to the current situation.

This incessant PR-campaign for promoting Tuktamysheva to the Olympics is starting to annoy me.

Now Orser is in touch: "Liza gives hope to all the skaters of the planet. She must be on the Olympic team in Beijing-2022" Everything is outrageous here - and "all the skaters of the planet", and "must"

(Yes, I understand that the scoundrels-journalists from sportsru, who enthusiastically participate in this PR-campaign, have strengthened the actions of Orser's words, taking them out of context, but still)

Liza gives hope to all the skaters of the planet. Because she continues to improve, despite the fact that she is no longer a young girl, but a young woman. How could I forget her? Write that I like her the most, that she is the best!

Her work with Alexey Mishin is incredible, I sincerely wish her to get to the Olympics in Beijing. She must to be on the Olympic team in Beijing. I really hope to see her there, it would be great for the whole world of figure skating

The goal of this PR-campaign is obvious - that Liza would have a soft pillow in the form of a "unanimous public opinion". So that the judges at the Russian championship know that it is necessary to judge Liza in a special way. So that the federation that will determine the third ticket to the Olympics by the internal council knows that "Liza deserved it!"

This is outrageous.

I like one of the popular comments under this note: "Liza in the Olympic team gives hope to figure skaters from other countries for bronze". Indeed
Completely taken out of context.

Heartbroken by Sasha's withdrawal from the NHK Trophy, not GPF which suggests that her injury is serious. The road to the Olympics is complicated for her, she can almost be seen outside the Olympic team.
The only good thing about having so many sentimental favorites is that Anna and Kami are practically on the Olympic team (except injuries, please do not happen 🙏), and looking forward to Aliona taking advantage of this opportunity to enter GPF and stay with the third Olympic spot.

Anna looks as soft as a kitten but is as tough as nails. Unreal. I am not worried about her anymore Anna is finding her way and will be one of the favorites for the Russian olympic team. And being the current world #1, current world champion and current 3 time national champion will give her the tiebreaker edge over others for the olympic team if it comes down to that.

If the KaMissile or Sasha had Annas mental toughness they would be unbeatable!
Kamila is still learning, but so far so good from her. The key will be when she has to come from behind one day, and she gets more skating time where injuries and aches start creeping up.

Sasha hasn’t shown that she is a consistent big game player yet. That‘s why her having great practices and warmups never excited me as much as it did other people. Practices are the most overrated things in sports. They are there to fine tune your game, not be the game.

Believe it or not, most “westerners “ don’t pay attention to tennis or the Williams sisters. Tennis is not as popular as you might think.

I’m sorry to hear about Trusova. I was hoping for her to get that Olympic gold. I know I shouldn’t be surprised and there is still time. She’s the only one that can actually potentially beat Kamila. Don’t get me wrong- Kamila has deserved her win so far this season, but I’d really like to see one of the veteran/seasoned girls prove the world wrong and beat the newly anointed one that pops up every year.

Very true and it's amazing how Anna can go from a shaky practice to a golden performance. That's said I think she's going to have to have more than one quad to be able to beat KV.

It's crazy that "veteran/season girls" are Sasha and Anna. They're still only 17.

I think that is premature statement. From what I understand, she is back in training already, just didn't have enough time to get to the form. Of course it is sad news but the most important here will be russian nationals and she can be fine at that time.

What difference does it make how old they are? Someone can accomplish so many things in a couple of years that another person will not do for the rest of his life. Anna is a three-time champion of the most difficult competition on the planet. She is a true veteran, not Tuktamysheva, for example. And the fact that you found out about her existence a couple of years ago is not Anna's problem. Figure skating started for her 13 years ago, and at the professional level an approximate 7-8 years ago.

Who will Russia send to take Sashas place at NHK? Please no sanodurova or Konstantinova. Maybe Guliakova? Frovlova? sending anna would mean she cant bolt rusfed after this season. Samodelkina? Isnt she 15 before July 1, 2021 and has a 3A and quads?

I hope her foot heals and Sasha is flying again by rusnats. foot injuries are tricky especially for figure skaters.

Serena is one athlete building a massive legacy. These situations are not even comparable as it's not one skater winning everything. Having said that, I do not like Russian athletes being criticised. So far the younger skaters have been bringing new elements and setting new records that surpass the older skaters. Now current Srs are quad specialists too and I do want to see staying power for at least some of them. If not it will be disappointing.

Samodelkina is almost a year younger than Valieva so she's not eligible. Have to be 16 by the closing date not 15.

In the context or not, the coach of the main competitor of the Russian girls should not have discussed the choice of the future Russian Olympic team. These are the basics of ethics.
That would like EG publickly picking an olympic spot for a skater another country. LOL! she would be villified for doing so.

Why cant they just leave the Russian girls and fed alone? s there Russian coach that ever talks about non russian skaters?
