I think it was just because it was an Olympic season. Their other domestic competitions are very low-scoring.

Who cares about national inflation so long as skaters selected via it are the ones you want to see in the competitions after nationals? Hilariously, despite the difference in scoring, Russians and Japanese both did 5/6 for me in singles. Let’s see how Americans do lol
