All the names and skaters were totally new to me and it always takes me time to get something registered in my brain. However I do remember being impressed by the skaters who finished in the top 3 positions.

I was also impressed by the speed and apparent joy exhibited by the final skater, Annabell Wuchrer, who finished in 6th.

I’m glad I worked up the energy to walk over to the rink and watch the A group.

I'm in the same boat - the names are all new to me too. And that is why I like watching National Championships (and Senior B events, for that matter). You get to see the up and coming skaters, and get a headstart.

It's just a pity that so many Nationals end up being held at the same time, and you have to pick and choose what to watch.

I suppose that is one good thing about America and Canada having their Nationals in the New Year. But, it is not good when they instead clash with Europeans or the Universiade or the Youth Olympics.

Anyway, glad you are enjoying the skating.

Are there many spectators? We haven't had a head on look at the stands since the start of the day. The camera shot they normally stay on during the intervals only shows the half of the stand next to where the Zamboni comes out, and that area is completely empty.

Yay!!! The final boy in Group 1 was doing a Queen programme. And appropriately for me, it was a "Flash Gordon" programme!

Not only is my name Gordon, but every morning for the past few weeks I have been watching an episode of the original 1930's series starring Buster Crabbe.

Mind you, the channel made a right mess of broadcasting it. They showed Series 2 ("Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars"); then Series 1 ("Space Soldiers"); then Series 3 ("Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe"). :palmf: :bang:

The 1980 film was based on "Space Soldiers" and, I have to be honest, the series was better. But, the soundtrack to the film is epic!

I enjoyed that programme from Max.

By the way, the livescoring hasn't been working since the second skater.

Where's @elektra blue ? The boy from Hesse is skating to her favourite song of all time!!!

For those that don't realise, I'm being sarcastic. Elektra hates "Grande Amore" by Il Volo. I, on the other hand, love it!

He went into 3rd position, just 0.41 points ahead of the boy who did the "Flash Gordon" programme.

By the way, since I brought you here Elektra, which of the Länder would your nephews be representing if you managed to convince them to take up skating?

For the rest of the day, the Jugend (Basic Novice) skaters that were in action yesterday afternoon return to do their Free Skates. So, we have 20 A girls; then 21 B girls; then a group of 5 boys.

Oh, and we are on a new stream too.

Livestream for the Jugend A Ladies FS is now on air.

It appears that skater #3 Alexandra FEIST (NRW) has withdrawn.

Hope everything is alright with her.

The livescoring hasn't started working yet, so this is from what the rinkside announcer said.

Well, that was an enjoyable variety of programmes from the opening group.

Only the second skater, Veronika FRISORGER (B-W) was skating to a song that I knew (and I'm not complaining, because it was The Scorpions!) Although I was not familiar with the songs, I enjoyed what the other 3 girls were skating to.

Nelli MIASOIEDOVA (THR) was skating to "A Little Wicked" by Valerie Broussard
Emily KAISER (B-W) was skating to "How Villains Are Made" by Madalen Duke
Emilia BURGARDT (BAY) was skating to three songs, the first of which was "You Don't Love Me" by Caro Emerald

As I say, we are getting to hear lots of music that we don't normally.

That said, earlier on today we did have two skaters in a row skating to this season's new warhorse, "Voilà" by Barbara Pravi...

By the way, the two girls in first in the Advanced Novice category respectively are just three months apart in age - Adelina was born in September 2011 and Diana in December 2011. Both will be junior-eligible next season, so the competition for those preciously few JGP spots will be even tougher than this season.

So sad that Olesya is still injured (at least I assume that is what's going on), I was so hopeful to see her here 💔 Especially because she is going to be Senior-eligible next season.
And Valentina Andrianova is also missing (though she wasn't on the entry list from the start), I had hoped she had recovered from her injury when she skated a great Short at Denis Ten Memorial, but she withdrew from the Free and didn't compete afterward.

From looking at the live feed this morning, I had assumed that there was no one there. It actually was not that bad. There was no one sitting on the camera side of the rink but there were people scattered around the side I was sitting on. I think there may have only been 2 other people in the front row with me (they were all the way down at the other end) but there were people in the upper rows. I’m guessing most of them were probably elatives of the skaters but there could have been some casual viewers like me.

There was no special ticket fee to get in. I got in using the Allgau-Walser Card that everyone staying in the village gets included in their room rent.

I could only see two video cameras: the official one on a platform above the judges and someone with a hand held camera standing on the stairs next to the platform. I assume the online feed must be coming from the official camera. I’m not sure what they had for judges or technical people because it looked like there were only about 3 people sitting below the camera.

It's not something I've often thought about, but I expect that things like this are more common than we would think. Even if it was not a split competition like this.

I wonder how many skaters there are that were born close together and came up through school and skating together but, because they were born on either side of the date for becoming age eligible, they get separated and people then assume there is a big age difference.

Come to think of it, have we ever had twins affected like that? Being born on either side of midnight on 30th June / 1st July.

I remember always thinking it was surreal having the Gjersem twins competing at different levels for a lot of their careers (Camilla being a step behind Anne-Line). But, that was nothing to do with when they were born - their birthday is in January.

My goodness! Olesya is eligible for Seniors next season?! :drama: Time really is flying!

Yeah, it's a shame that those two girls are not here. But, I prefer to see an athlete sit out to make sure they are fully recovered, than to come back to soon and end up having a set-back.

Looking forward to seeing them back at full fitness.

That is one thing I hate - when the positioning of the cameras makes you think the place is empty, when in fact the stands within camera view are closed and all the spectators are sitting in the stands located behind the cameras. And viewers of the stream only realise that there is actually people there from hearing the applause. It gives a misleading impression of the amount of support there is for the event, and the sport.

That said, like you, I would expect that most of the spectators are actually family members. Especially since we are coming up to it being a week until Christmas (scary thought! ). Most people will be trying to get things organised for that, rather than going to watch skating.

That is good that there is no entrance fee. That'll encourage people to attend.

I was investigating going to the Tallinn Trophy a couple of months ago, and I couldn't find any mention of buying tickets. So I assume it was free entry too. As it turned out, the logistics of getting to Dublin airport for a 06:20 flight meant that I abandoned the idea of going, and I just watched it on the stream.

But, I still hope to see figure skating live sometime.

June has only 30 :) . I know because it is my birthday. In junior soccer there are statistics showing that kids born in the first half of the year (in soccer the split is between dec 31 / Jan 1st) have advantages like bigger change to be scouted by major clubs.

:palmf: I'm an idiot! :slink:

As for the point you are making, I have heard similar stories about the performance of kids in school years. That the older ones tend to do better than the younger ones.

And I am afraid that this is where I am going to leave my viewing of the German Championships for today. I am going to be leaving for food at quarter past. Plus, I haven't actually seen the final two groups of yesterday's Jugend B Ladies SP yet.

All the best to all the girls and boys that are still to skate

Methinks they were timing announcing the scores for the penultimate skater in the opening group strategically, so that a particular line of the song being played in the arena wouldn't be broadcast. But, although they were fading it out, it wasn't being faded quickly enough and you still heard the words "sexually explicit".

Not really the most appropriate lyrics to be played during a competition for what seems to be the youngest skaters competing this week.

I was starting to get worried for Skaters #10 and #11 there. Because the table for the overall results was looking very organised. We had:

  • 3 North Rhine Westphalia skaters
  • then 4 Berlin skaters
  • then the first skater from Saxony
  • then the sole skater from Thuringia

Skaters #10 and #11 are both from Saxony. So if this trend continued, they would have dropped down the order. Thankfully for them, it didn't.

Skater #11 is now leading, while Skater #10 is in 6th, behind the first of the Berlin skaters.

I'm losing my touch. Or else, the skaters and their teams have cottoned onto the way we think, and are trying to catch us out.

In the previous group there was a girl wearing a canary yellow dress. And there was another in this group. And neither of them was doing a "La La Land" programme. :drama:

That said, the dress did make sense for this girl, Skater #18. She was doing a "Beauty And The Beast" programme.

Belle%27s_ball_gown_1991.jpg

She goes into the lead of both the FS and overall.
