2024 Grand Prix de France Men's Short Program

This SP was BAD. It doesn't matter to me how many skaters are injured or not. I wish them all very well. At the same time, I am also very aware that MANY if not all skaters are competing with some injury or another. The severity of the injury is something that their medical team will evaluate. In the end, my comment was about what I saw. A very poorly performed event. That is the reality no matter who is injured or not.

2017 GPF was BAD. None of the men skating the worst were skating injured. So badly, in fact, journalists asked the top three at a press conference what the heck was going on out there and should they possibly rethink doing quads at all since they couldn't hack it. The arrogant one smirked and brushed off the mess on the ice as just part and parcel of the evolution of skating and that they should just expect crap on the ice since they were gods of some sort, making history. And you think a messy event is just a messy event that should all be treated the same way?

I disagree.

Well I am up and coffee'd and before going to the stream thought I'd look quickly over what happened and... what happened???? I mean, I am thrilled for Boyang, I am so hoping he will podium but didn't want to jinx him with my favours. And Kazuki with a bronze medal, considering the way JSF treat him, is great. But do I even want - or dare - to go and watch the rest?

I'm also thrilled for Boyang and Kazuki, and heartbroken for Adam. Actually I did hope for Boyang to podium, never thought he would win with Adam there. But forgot Adam, injured or not, can be a mess.
But you can safely go and watch, it is not that bad, it just.... wasn't great. It usually looks worse from hearsay than in reality, especially if you know what to expect. But it was interesting. :)

Wow, what a cacti event. We had a bit of a screaming contest with the girl seated next to me, I think we appeared on camera a few times screeching our lungs out for the prickly boys ^^' Random thoughts before going to bed :

Aleksandr Selevko was my favourite of the event. I really loved his choreo, commitment, and especially his music (will download it asap, it was lovely). So expressive through his entire body.

Close second, Kazuki ! I'm in the adoring his costume gang x') The mash of colors looked gorgeous live. This program was magnificent, great choreo, great music. He looked like he had a blast. His step sequence was absolute fire.

Super thrilled for Boyang ! I liked his Vienna program better (though this "Same Time Same Place Next Year" lyric was very on point lol), but he looked so happy. I was surprised that there weren't many plushies ; last year there was quite the plushies shower after his SP.

I really quite like Luc, he's been steadily growing on me since last year. I feel like he has a lot more expressivity than he's credited for ; and a very unique style of movement. I suppose it's hard to exist artistically next to Kevin and Adam. I'm sure when his tech stabilises he'll shine too !

Koshiro is such a joy. At some point in his step sequence he gave a huge beaming smile towards my section, and absolute everybody melted. How can anybody resist such a cute smile :')

I absolutely didn't understand the concept behind Lukas' program, and was very puzzled at the costume. Now that I've read it's a sign language program, I will definitely rewatch it (... but maybe a version that he managed to skate clean, poor boy). Loved how he took the technical delay at the beginning of the program (little hip wiggle and giggles ^^). He seems to be such a wholesome lil guy.

Was quite looking forward to seeing Andrew Thorgashev, enjoyed his skate a lot but wasn't that transcended. He does have a lot of quality in his movements, well done to him having one of the most cleanish skates with only a freak fall out of nowhere in true cacti fashion.

I like Mikhail Shaidorov. His Matrix was a bit better choreographically, imo, but Dune can suit him nicely. Huge kudos to him pulling out a 4T+3T combo in the later half after that hard fall on the 4Lz.

I'm worried for François. If he really injured his shoulder I hope he withdraws. He really seemed to be in pain. I loved the opening choreo for his program, lots of nice details and accents throughout but obviously the mistakes took him out of it.

Nikolaj Memola has beautiful balletic qualities, but he struggled just as much as I remembered from last year. I don't find him very memorable yet, I sense he has potential but he needs the right program for it to click imo.

Likewise, Camden is not my cup of tea, mostly because I really don't vibe with any of his program choices. His kiss n cry moment with the Kirby plushy was cute. Don't stab yourself in the head man ! Everybody was menning today, don't beat yourself up too hard.

Adam, well. I didn't have a lot of hopes considering he's coming from quite the injury. He looked really really nervous during the warmup, and so frustrated after his skate. We cheered him on as best we could but he just seemed dejected. His opening combo was really amazing though. The program is a huge mess, as much as I hate to admit I believe SOS d'un terrien en détresse is better than this awful Coolio remix. I have faith that he has the grit to arrive guns blazing tomorrow, but will the health and confidence allow ?

Overall, horrified Benoît exclaiming "OH P*TAIN" during the slow-mo replays was a big mood for this entire event. There were definitive highlights as long as we decide jumps aren't real, but yeah. Wishing approximately everyone a good redemption skate in the free !!

It looked like the most glorious plate of alien vegetable spaghetti imaginable. Now the top Japanese fashion plates have left, Kazuki is taking up the challenge.

Is he slated for Cup of China? If so, that will be where the rain comes.

I never like to see anyone skate hurt, but if Adam was doing moves like this as recently as Oct. 9 (as the date shows), this is really concerning. Part of being a good competitor is taking care of yourself, which he really should be thinking about if he plans to compete at the 2026 Olys.

That was something wasn't it? Just caught up on the competition (because sleep is more important than figure skating ). The first group was actually okay. Best two skaters in terms of skating skills imho were in the first group Andrew (amazing edges and blade control) and Koshiro (lovely flow). They were both underscored in PCS and GOE IMHO. Like Andrew's program a lot better than Koshiro's, but that's just personal preference.

The best thing Brian and Tracy have done for Boyang is realized that he is a total softy. He absolutely connects so well with sappy, emotional music. His skating skills are also improving although they still aren't top notch. Enjoyed the program.

Selevko was good too. Bit messy. However, he is good performer. Definitely musical.

In the second group, I only want to mention Kazuki. Not the best skate. However, he is always a good performer. I personally would have put him behind Andrew and Koshiro with that skate. Not that he wasn't good, but I just think they were better.

The rest, I have nothing to say. I hope no one got seriously hurt. I felt emotionally hurt watching them.......

Turn up the volume and listen to Benoit call out his name.

lol i hear Adam, no long M... as a matter of fact, both "a" are very short too, the way I would say it as a native speaker and how it's said in the "how to say" video I have shared earlier... but you know.. that is probably just me being old and deaf.

ETA in French, often the final consonant is silent. Like in Thomas, you won't hear the S like you would in English MASS but it will be MA.
With the AM combo, it turns the A into a nasal vowel which doesn't quite exist in English. Richaud says it that way and not in some other version which would give A- DAMmmm with a long wet M and no nasal.. It's very short vowels, the first A being a clear and pure A sound and the second the AM is transformed into a AN sound, close, short and dry nasal.

here in case you need it again

PS I work with singers a lot and diction is one of my things so.. sorry for being so detailed about this. :)

Who are those two ladies in pink whose profession seems to be going to FS events?
I've been wondering the same thing too! I have seen them literally at every competition this year. They must have the finances to be travelling to each competition ..... i enjoy seeing them tho:)

They have been in several competitions for years. I wonder if they are some of those regular ig-posters, who make money with it, but I never see them with cell phones.

If I remember correctly they are colleagues and they just spend all the vacation they get from work for going to competitions :D And I might be wrong there but think I've read somewhere that they work in a medical profession...

So I am watching, not able to comment in real time.

No expectations when watching Camden, it is easier that way,

Going way back, my beloved Andrew T. Random fall in that beautiful program😩 ( with godawful depressing lyrics)

Props to Boyang!
I honestly 🙄 when I see Camden skate now. I EXPECT him to bomb. Way easier to have absolutely NO expectations with him... I'll throw in Jimmy Ma in that same category too ... and then they both show up US Nationals with good performances....another 🙄 moment for me

You're right! Never seen them with cell phones recording ....whenever the camera passes them, they are very present
