2024 ISU International Adult Competition | Oberstdorf | May 12-17

Haven't felt like posting recently, but just want to say how beautiful Alev ŞAHIN (CAN)'s programme was.

She's the second Canadian skater with a Turkish name that I've seen here who I was impressed with (after Nilüfer ERDEBIL yesterday).

The girl after her, Kayleigh ROYCROFT (GBR), skated to a not great cover of "City Of Stars" from "La La Land".

And her companions had a massive Scottish flag that said "Team Scotland" with them!

That's all bases covered for you in rapid succession, @Diana Delafield ! ;)

I really enjoyed that from Natsumi FURUKAWA (JPN). Sure, she is not at the level of the Japanese skaters of her age that we normally see, but she was still good.

And even though I have only seen her for about 5 minutes, there is just something about her that you can't help but like. She has a smile that enchants you.

She was skating to an up-tempo Japanese song, and it really energised her. The costume wasn't my taste, but who cares!

And I was so busy waxing lyrical about her that I missed hearing her results! :rolleye:

I got curious, and looked up Furukawa.

She was 21st in Novice A at Nationals in 2016. The Top 5 were:

🥇 Rika Kihira
🥈 Mako Yamashita
🥉 Mao Iwano
4th Rinka Watanabe
5th Shiika Yoshioka

The previous year she was 7th. Behind:

🥇 Yuna Aoki
🥈 Marin Honda
🥉 Momoka Sumi
4th Yuna Shiraiwa
5th Rinka Watanabe
6th Tamoe Kawabata

Makes you realise what gems we are missing out on due to the depth of talent in Japan.

And now that we have reached the end of Group 2, I am leaving this competition for food.

All the best to everybody that is still to skate.

@Diana Delafield - we just had a German lady, Juliane von GEISAU, wearing full Highland dress and skating to bagpipe music!!!!!

 :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

There were vocals briefly, but they weren't there long enough to spoil it.

Your Scottish blood would have been bubbling with pride! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

She goes into 2nd position.

Wish I could have seen her! I scrolled further in the translated link and yes, it does say ad-blocker needs to be removed "because we rely on advertising revenue". My limited technical expertise doesn't extend that far, I'm afraid.

My oldest grandkid in Aberdeen, who's an ice dancer with her husband in their spare time, may have seen that. I know she's watched a bit of it, but as a junior pathologist who works odd shifts her TV time is limited.

Just while the final group are doing their Warm-Up, I want to point out something from the previous group.

You know how a lot of skaters in Germany are part of the army's sports programme, and a lot of skaters in Italy are part of the police's sports programme. Well, when Giulia BARILE (ITA) was getting her scores, she had a guy sitting next to her that was wearing what looked to me like an army uniform.

Never seen that before!

I don't know if Giulia is on a military sports programme. But if she is, it is good to see somebody taking an interest in how she is getting on.

I did a bit of research on those sponsorship programs recently, and although the Italian skaters usually seem to be in the police group, in that country the military as well as all the emergency services sponsor athletes. Army, police, fire departments, ambulance/paramedics, etc.

Back just in time for Sophie COXHEAD (GBR).

We had "Star Trek" earlier today, now it is time for "Star Wars". A beautiful piano and strings instrumental.

And she skated it well.

Oooh. She's got a personalised flag with her name and rink on it.

She goes into 8th position.

I was going to say "ooh, we have working livescoring!" But, I see it is stuck on Alexandra EDWARDS (GBR), who skated before Sophie.

I wonder if Alexandra is related to Samantha EDWARDS (GBR), who won the first of the Bronze I Ladies FS competitions earlier. If I had seen her, I might have been able to tell.

Boys, but I love "Proud Mary" by Ike and Tina Turner. Apart from being a great song in itself, it always makes a great skating programme. As Melissa SARGENT (CAN) has just shown.

Can't say I'm a fan of the costume. It doesn't really have a connection to the music. There was another skater earlier or yesterday (can't remember when) that did a "Proud Mary" programme, and her dress was practically identical to one that I saw Tina wearing when she was young.

Nevertheless, I loved this programme. Melissa was really going for it.

Another "This Is Me" to finish the competition off. But, this one was a re-mix. And it didn't have the same feel as the original.

Saskia PFEIFFER (DEU) was wearing a beautiful royal blue dress. And on the whole she skated well. Except that she had a fall.

Nevertheless, she finishes in 3rd position.

We finish the day with our first two Gold competitions. A group of 6 Gold III ladies; followed by a group of 3 Gold III + IV gentlemen.

I might be able to stay to the end. I'm not sure yet.

Livestream for the Gold III Ladies FS is now on air.

I am having serious doubts about the age range table that I am looking at. Because there is no way that the first skater, Claudia MANSKE (DEU), is anywhere near her 50's!

Maybe if there were two of her skating... :p

What a beautiful programme to start off the competition.

And I could repeat that for the second skater, Paola SABATTINI (ITA)!

She was skating to "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurthymics, and wearing a black dress.

That was just a great programme!

She goes into 2nd position.

Another beautiful programme by the third skater, Marjo JUNTUNEN-NIELSEN (DEN), to "Alegria" from Cirque Du Soleil.

You know, I know we are only 3 skaters in, but I can already see why these skaters are Gold level. They are definitely at a higher level than the skaters we have seen so far the past couple of days.

She goes into 3rd position.

"Voilà, Voilà, Voilà"

Is this the first time we have seen a programme to Barbara Pravi's 2021 Eurovision entry this week? Well, it wouldn't be a figure skating event without it!

Another beautiful programme, this time from Andrea LOCHNO (DEU). And she is wearing a beautiful maroon dress.

She goes into the lead.

Does anyone know what group Midori Ito is in? Most of the events air during my classes and in the middle of the night so I wanna try and time myself so I can watch her group.

I don't know why, but Tracey HODGKINSON-JONES (GBR)'s name sounds very familiar. But, she doesn't look familiar.

She was skating to a female cover of "California Dreaming". And wearing a wild orange and yellow dress.

She goes into 5th position

Midori is skating in the Masters Elite Women III + IV Artistic Free Skating, which according to the Provisional Time Schedule posted a month ago, is being held tomorrow and is due to start at approximately 17:10 CEST (GMT+2).

But, I do not have the latest version of the Time Schedule, so it could have changed since then due to withdrawals.

Hope this helps

And to finish off the ladies for today, Rachael RICHARDS (GBR) was yet another skater skating to "This Is Me".

And she was good!

She goes into 2nd position.
