2024 Russian Junior Test Skates

All Eteri's programs are disappointing.. when compared to a few years ago, meh.... I wonder where all the creativity went...
Except for Arseny. It is like they use up all their creativity for him. lol. Every year I say they need to bring in new choreographic talent-there is plenty in Russia, because some of the girls from the outer reaches have innovative interesting programs that make Eteri's programs look pedestrian. Yametova for example.

I LOVE Lena’s program, very great potential, one of my favorite. Sad about what happened, she is maybe not ready for junior yet but I’m sure she will bounce back. She must feel an enormous pressure on her since she’s known as a big potential/future star.

Despite the mistakes I feel Masha is in a great shape and wish her a great season !

Petrova impressed me with her highs jumps and maybe she is ready to train for quads.

Didn’t know anything about yana but I liked her program and she did well. A little bit too childish though.

Tsipukhina… what a mature skater ! Definitely in another planet than the others! It’s senior level.

Varvara was the BIG surprise for me. Very good program, liked the music and loved her skating !

I guess I’m the only one to like Alisa’s program but as a French, I’m happy to hear Edith Piaf and songs of my childhood.
I see potential in this program and think French style suits Alisa very well but I understand those who dislike it (for the moment)

Margo is on fire !!! Big music for her but it reminds me of the one from last year. Can’t wait to see the battle between her and Lena.

Even if I didn’t like the music, i enjoyed watching Anna. Good skating and very good energy. She deserves to be here

Alena… what a beauty on ice !! My favorite with Alisa for sure. I was afraid that it was an epic version of moonlight sonata but that was ok.
Hope she’ll get some stability, she deserves to top.

well, Plushenko confirmed that Lena had a fever a few days ago...I'm not sure why they thought it would be a good idea to have her do 3 quads when she clearly wasn't fully recovered :palmf: poor kid was so out of breath

Similar thing happened at the jumping tournament last season. I think she got injured or something on a fall but kept jumping. Its hard to imagine Plushenko forced her though considering he kicked out Zinina for training with an injury. Maybe Kostyleva just refuses to withdraw from things. Though you could make the argument they should pull her out anyways since shes so young.

Well, he said she didn't want to withdraw, but she's 12, most kids that age think they're invincible and don't know their own limitations. But it would have been better if they just had her do triples

I think there's an excuse after every Kostyleva performance injury, illness, coaching, etc. So far undefeated. She didn't look too out of breath to me. I'm sure she wasn't 100%, but almost no athlete ever is. For Kostyleva and her mother, anything short of a performance like Margarita's is a failure in their eyes. It didn't go to plan for Lukashova, but there's a spark and joy to her performance and you can see the potential. Kostyleva's performances never evoke joy for me just sadness. She's great at jumping (one of the best albeit inconsistent). Maybe the bar is just so high in Russia because Kostyleva would only need one quad and a triple axel to compete with Shimada and no ultra-c to compete with Shin. Maybe she would enjoy her skating more in another federation.

When I was competing, my mom and I would laugh about "skating excuses", and on the way to competitions we would jokingly come up with long long lists, the more silly the better, like todays' bingo card. Nothing has really changed in the skating world, watch any competition and you get treated to a litany of misfortunes that hamper a skaters performance. And most of these mysterious illness's present and are declared before a skater ever takes the ice, sort of a way to hedge your bets in case things go wrong. One thing i think does affect most skaters, at least it did me-is lack of sleep due to nerves the night before you skate. Kostyleva is high strung to say the least, wouldn't be surprised if this was the actual issue.

I suppose she wouldn't have accepted that. Can't really control her when shes mid-program if she just wants to jump the quad anyways. But ultimately I agree with your sentiment. Its interesting how strict Plushenko was with Zinina but he seems so lacklustre dealing with Kostyleva. He needs to be more assertive with her but I wonder if he is scared of the talking to he will get from her mother if he tries anything against Elena's wishes...

Actually I never believe that Plushenko - Zinina Story

Morning, everyone. Well, it's morning here, and I can watch the free skates! I started with the women saving the men's free for later.

Personally, I am never one to criticize the athletes for being emotional, good or bad, so I just love Kostyleva and that program looks very cool. I think it will become one of those programs that she will grow I to and everyone will be like, a 12 yo skates so well to such a grown up music, woot!

I am glad Petrova will have a new program, not because I don't love this one, but because I am always looking forward to new ones from her. She is so expressive and has fantastic glide.

Also, kudos to Grishin for daring to mention that Russians representing Russia won't be in Milan. The more of these young skaters get the message, the better.

I feel Tzipukhina's style is too resolute and robust for her program that demands vulnerability, but I love the resolute and robust. Just different music/presentation/concept for the skater imo, and she would be awesome.

The first skater that I loved 100% absolutely everything about the program and presentation, like perfect A, was Liss. Just amazing.

Bazylyuk is a machine. Music works with grandiose content, hopefully she will look brighter as season goes on to bring it home.

Lyashenko was awesome, but the music is a bit cringe for a 15 yo. Going to be looking forward to every competition with her though.

The first group of junior men was just spectacular, despite the mistakes. Impressed by how much Lazarev wants it this year. Still easier to predict the podium here than in women, save for Bazyluyk obviously. She's golden.

Hope to see them all, junior women and men, in the Russian GP stages. It's really too bad they won't ever get Ted and Prime time exposure. 😪 It’s a wonderful group of juniors.

Does anyone know Tsipukhina's height? She seems much taller and a more athletic build than the other girls making jumps more difficult. Yet her 4S might be the most impressive quad in female skating right now.

Edit. Wow finding the height of a skater is usually impossible but google found it straight away. Last November she was already 168cm. She must be the tallest female in the entire world to ever successfully land a quad. Valieva was 167cm I think it was and has probably grown a little taller, but didn't land one in competition last season.

Khromykh might've been taller, like 170cm. Also wondering how tall Morozova was last season, maybe around that same range as Tsipukhina.

Finally found time to go back and watch Elena's program since I missed it live since the event started early. I REALLY like it. The music, the program, the dress is my favorite out of the entire event, even with her stopping in the middle in distress. I really hope she gets her emotions and/or illnesses under control and skates that program well because so far I like it a LOT more than Margo's programs.
