In interview with Maxim Trankov, Andrei and Alisa said that they started preparing as soon as they found out that they were paired. First, they worked out a general strategy and discussed the composition of jumps. They decided on 4T as the most reliable jump in their arsenal, and chose 3Lz next. In fact, they wanted to take the content harder, try to perform a more difficult quad in a round of parallel jumps, but bet on stability and clean execution. Then they learned to synchronize, they were given the same jump entries and exits. You could notice that even their arm movements and body position looked identical at that moment.
After the work was done, they simply devoted a few minutes at each practice to jumping parallel jumps and cascades.
The guys were very happy with this new experience, they literally felt like a team. Maxim Trankov was incredibly proud and noted their amazing synchronization and how close they performed the jumps. According to him, even in sports pairs such a thing is extremely rare. He was very impressed.

A bit of live impressions, day 1
Men's Quarterfinals
Great round. One of the greatest ones in the history of the event. Only one skater totally bombed his attempt. Most skaters did their best and saved themselves from a total disaster (like Grisha and Nikita).
Vlad was outstanding, it was obvious nobody had a chance to beat that.
I've seen a 4Lz by Makar at the warm-up but unfortunately he didn't have a chance to show it.
My fave didn't seem to care much about the individual event. Like no strategy at all. He could open up with a 3A+3A like last season and then decide what he does with the solo jump. In the end he just let it go and tried to do as many Axels as he could. At least the crowd appreciated it.
Matvei's jumps looked a little suspicious. The tech panel didn't seem to care much.
Artur was painful to watch. I understand that he was invited based on his results this season but he's not a jumper at all.
Mark forgot the rules and got eliminated in a stupid way. Though, he took off for the final jump when his time was over anyway.
Andrei was surprisingly good. I've seen many hopeless popped flips at the warm-up. I didn't expect him to actually do that in a his run.
Gleb is in a great shape comparing to the rest of this season. He might podium or win.
Ugozhaev's warm-up was a mess but he got it together for his run.
Women's Quarterfinals
Daria was Daria.
Alisa was breathtaking. She even got time to play with the crowd. A pity she didn't manage to do a third quad.
Kamilla and Maria's Axels were worse than at the other competitions so they didn't manage to qualify.
Kamila was in a surprisingly great shape both physically and mentally. I surely saw her training videos but they didn't mean that her shape and stamina are already good enough. But they are. Her warm-up attempt was great and out-of-nowhere as well. A pity she seemed to have stamina only for one attempt in her run. Must be a lot of pressure to perform in front of such loud crowd.
Maria had a scary painful fall but managed to save herself.
Sasha was in a better shape than I expected as well. But I don't get the idea of a 3Fe. It was very very outside edge. She didn't restore the 3Lo?
Sofia's effortless triples seem to be back. She beat Maria and Kamilla with them. At the warm-up, there was a step-out 3A attempt. She also tried to land it in her run and after her run but that wasn't any close unfortunately.
Many skaters released that they can win some time by starting going into a jump before their time begins. Anna also tried to do this but accidentally started a combo before her time started. After that she looked completely lost and off. She wouldn't qualify anyway but that was sad to watch. By the way, why does she do 3Lz+3Los in trainings but not in such events?
Unexpected 3A+3A from a Dina. I didn't think a woman can do that. Moreover, she went for it as her first combo attempt. That is, she was sure that she would most likely do it.
Duos
The judging here was clearly stricter. Sometimes probably stricter than in pairs competitions. It lead to some really long waitings.
It seems like the first round is worth too many points, making it almost impossible to win back.
Anna & Matvei brought as art as they promised. Matvei's jumps were killed by the tech panel (unlike the individual event) so they didn't win a medal.
Maria & Vlad had a big disadvantage. The only quad Maria does is the only one Vlad can't do. She also seemed to be tired at the end of the event. This duo also couldn't train together. In general, bronze was probably the best possible result for them.
Sasha & Makar were quite good. They could challenge bronze if not some mistakes including not knowing combo rules.
Kamila & Mark didn't seem to have any strategy. It was just SBS 4Ts. Mark couldn't do the 4T in the warm-up and continued to make mistakes on it during the performance. In general, this quad is quite uncomfortable for him. With a better planning they could challenge bronze.
Alisa & Andrei were unexpectedly good. Just like in the individual event, Andrei had problems at the warm-ups but not in the actual runs.
Sofia & Zhenya did literally everything they could. My biggest concern was that 3Lz was Zhenya's worst jump. But they came really prepared for the duo event. The crowd was ecstatic after their first round. Their bows were sweet too. They were like a real team.
Overall, the competition is quite dynamic and easy to watch live (though I would prefer more competitors and rounds like last seasons). There was a media screen in the arena where you could watch done elements, preliminary scores and other info. But sometimes it was lagging.
Planned program contents at the warm-ups are a nice addition.
It seems like the least corrupted event in figure skating, where judges have close to zero chances to manipulate the score. That's why it will never be on ISU calendar. No politics in favour of clubs, coaches, past titles, etc. Who could predict that Mozalev would end up with the trophy in his hands. No one. Also, the audience is quite young, a lot of good-looking people, men and women. Such fandom means bright future for the sport. Unlike other audiences, with no desire of operator's close-up.

I think she definitely has the 3Lo. Didn't she land 3F later in duet?
Sofia always looks amazing in jumping competition. It was like this last year too.
Hasn't she done it in training before? And is she really the first to land this?
Was it that surprising or unexpected? I thought they were clearly the strongest team on paper, even if Vlad-Maria should be more consistent. Mark isn't very consistent in general. I was most surprised by Mura-Zhenya they were phenomenal.

Boikova is just nervy. I think it won't be as big of an issue at this tournament. It isn't as important.

It was crazy .. doing the second atemp ... but the length tha k. throw Boikova is impressive... but 3thr looks better now
