2025-26 Japanese Pairs and Ice Dance

You'd have to modify the style, and forget extra fabric, for safety reasons. Close fitting sleeves instead of the traditional long, loose ones. A neater band of "built-in" fabric instead of a separate sash, with the folded knot at the back much smaller, flatter, and all stitched down. Not much below hip length, and with the kimono opening stitched closed almost its full length. And the whole dress in a lighter, more flowing, fluttering stretch fabric than the traditional stiff silk. I've worn the real thing as a singer in a production of Madama Butterfly, and it's stiffer and heavier than it looks.

What you'd have to avoid in a costume for a pairs girl is any open loops of fabric on the sash or loose open sleeves, a dangerous trap for her partner's hands. A bulky traditional obi would make it impossible for him to get a grip on her waist for twists and many of the lifts and spins. A good costume maker could produce something that evoked the real thing without duplicating a kimono and just cutting it shorter.
Just as challenging as I thought it would be

Now, imagine that I need a full-length kimono and lose sleeves for a solo geisha dance at the beginning of the number; not necessarily authentic material-wise or structure-wise, but I need that costume silhouette. And I want her lifted above partner's head in full costume. Would this work: no hand-to-hand when he lifts her up; instead, he lifts her using a handle that is masked as a belt element (of course, no real belt here - the handle should be attached to a specifically made corset/leotard)?

Let me get this straight. You want a female skater to do a solo dance in a full-length, traditional style costume, geisha or otherwise, but begin with a man hoisting her in the air as an opening pose? The first word that pops into my head is "Why?", since a Japanese woman's costume and figure skating just don't suit each other. Their dance movements on the floor are very small and neat with short steps and almost no bend to the knees. If your skater tries to stroke, she's going to be catching her picks or the heels of her blades in her kimono hem, and face-plant. The silhouette in heavier fabric means it will bunch up around her hips as she moves, and won't flare out in a spin. And if the kimono is the authentic wrap style, then every time she does any kind of spiral move, she's going to be flashing the audience.

If you want her skating with a partner, then at least try for a very simple ice dance program, not pairs. How will she jump in that costume? More to the point, if she jumps dressed like that, she'll look................I'm trying to come up with a better word than "silly", but am drawing a blank. The whole geisha look is supposed to be a modest, controlled demeanour, with small movements, tiny steps, arms kept close to the body. No athleticism, no swooping or flinging out the arms, no leg extension.

However, if you insist, could you try one of those harness thingies used in ice shows for skaters to float around overhead and then be lowered to the ice where they unhook and start to skate? Just for her? A partnered lift is going to have to be standing still, because that fabric is going to be covering his face and blinding him, rather like the actor or dancer who plays the back end of a horse on stage. Very dangerous for both of them. A horizontal position for her like a platter or star would be even worse. He'd be fighting his way out of it as he set her down again, like a camper emerging from a small tent.

Any of the vertical position basic lifts would probably get her in the air and back down, standing still. They wouldn't look attractive (what would he be wearing, by the way?) but they're doable. And she can't be carrying a fan while this is going on. Somebody's going to get an eye poked out.

Can I not persuade you to have them be clouds floating around Mt Fuji instead, in sheer fabric, muted colour costumes? Or both in black with dramatic music as a pair of ninja or samurai warriors? 🙏

I noticed ShoMarin appeared in the new partnership announcement segment at Rockerlive page. Jackie Wong is rather reliable with fact checking, certainly more thant TSL so I wonder if he got some confirmation or just assumed that based on the same information that we got so far.

Some interesting ideas here 🤔

Let's make one thing clear though: I am not creating an ice show, like, really  I am using my imagination to explore the question: could RikuRyu be possibly cast for Hyoen series which is know, amid other, for using traditional Japanese costuming on ice? Have you seen any of these shows by the way? Links to YouTube videos are available on this thread. Shall we explore the above question (about RikuRyu or any pairs team possibly being cast) there if you don't mind? It feels a bit off-topic here :slink:

Never heard of these shows, sorry. I'm afraid I don't follow professional skating after competitors retire.

Edit: Sorry, I typed that quickly while doing something else at the same time, and it came out too abrupt. What I meant was, I skate, I don't often watch others skate. I watch televised competitions (in part to see if I can pick up some simpler connecting moves I might want to try myself), but never the gala at the end. My partner and I do demonstrations on various occasions and skate in club shows, our own or as guests at other local clubs, but we just do our own program and then perhaps watch others or go home depending on the location and other demands on our time. I don't watch television at all other than the news and some sports, never films or series, and then on the computer because I don't own a TV set. (To relax, I read.) If I understand the description of these shows you mention, I'm afraid they fall into the category of "not on my radar". I'm a doer (in this case, of skating and dance), not a watcher. Maybe when age or illness or injury forces me to be less active............ :ot::wave:

SumiIbu splits.
Interesting. Sounds like they are both planning to continue skating.

Ah, so they might just be going back to singles?
They never stopped doing singles, they were doing both. Last season it was already visible that thye way more focused on singles which is uderstandable as they didn't get any jr grand prix assignment cause JSF decided not to send teams and waste spots. I guess their motivation dropped. Why spend money and effort on training when you can't even compete? Ibuki got really good results as single skater so he even made it to the B reinforcement group funding. Sumire also did pretty well.
It's a pity cause they were skating together for quite some time since a young kids and I think if they were properly supported and motivated, they had more chances to build a career as ice dancers who can go to many international competitions than they do have as single skaters, considering the current level and depth of the field.

Ibuki's reaction after SP looks like he didn't expect this result (he was 4th after the short):

The free brought some disappointment... But I'm guessing that disappointment only created a wish to perform better next time :)

Let's look at some good stuff now. :dance2:

I hear an Ice Dance training camp was held in Nobeyama this weekend, so, who knows, we may get to see yet another new team or two or more, sometime soon.

Masaya of UtaMasa shared fun photos taken on a BOI day in his instagram! The 6th photo in it has all 5 teams in Kinoshita ~ UtaMasa, YunaSumi, IkuKo, AyuTomo, and AyuLuca. They all look great! (Except that Yuna is injured, skipped their BOI program, ended up just joining the talk show with RikuRyu, but no splitting or anything and she sounded fine.)

And KahoYuu started ASFAN (a fan-club platform for athletes) last month, it sounds like they're ready for their first Senior season too!

YunaSumi from HBC (Hokkaido Broadcasting Co.)

Japanese transcripts there in the video notes.

It's been 3 years since Yuna moved to Kyoto, but she says she has never felt like wanting to go home (to Hokkaido) because she didn't want to lose practice time. Sumitada says he doesn't know any pair skater who tries harder than her. With RikuRyu retiring, now they are aiming to get on the podium. (According to HBC, Yuna is now at home in Hokkaido, probably to heal for now.)
