I've only looked at the results and scores so far, haven't watched or read anything about it and almost fell out of my chair. Piper and Paul pretty much tied with Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron? The top 4 pairs basically tied? Maddie Schizas in 3rd? Stephen Gogolev in 2nd? Wild!

Several people lamented that in Pairs SP, Lia & Trennt's skate came in scoring under Alisa & Misha's, on grounds that L/T's was cleaner.

If you complain about that, then it seems to me you have to go back to the decision (particularly on men's quads) to reward risk more than quality. It's not exactly the same, but look at Efimova/Mitrofanov scores on the 3twist: 5.70 base value for a level 3 twist, plus 1.63 GOE for quality. Versus Periera/Michaud's 3twist: 5.40 base value for a level 2 twist, plus 1.08 GOE. So Alisa & Misha earned 7.33 points on their twist, while Lia & Trennt earned 6.48 for theirs. Difference: .85. Points on every element count, and rightly so. Go down the list and compare element for element. It all adds up.

I love watching a clean skate, and I love Lia & Trennt. But not as much as I love the quality of Alisa & Misha's skating, plus their emotional nuances, beauty and gentleness, and intensity. In the system we have now, we look at the whole skate, the qualities of presentation, and all of the GOE points that add up.

I'm just really glad that quality matters, not only numbers of rotations or cleanness, etc.

Of course, the 2 teams are virtually tied right now anyway, along with 2 other teams, all with only hundreds of a point difference. I'd better go to bed; tomorrow's FS is going to be something else!

I like quality. There are different ways to achieve quality though, not just the type that Efimova is showing. She's special... but it's certainly not the only way that quality should be rewarded. I still don't even how Mitrofanov looks like because I have never noticed him. Efimova would be a star in solo dance. She's beautiful to watch. Unfortunately, she's skating in pairs and her partner's presence or lack of thereof is an issue for me.

Watched some of the men's short and some of the ladies' short. Yuma's jazz SP was going well minus a fall and a step out. I really love his step sequence. And Amber Glenn was excellent. This is the first time I've seen her SP this season (haven't been keeping up). The height on her triple axel is magnificent. On a superficial note, I compliment whomever did the secure sewing on her costume that has those layers of "jewels" to make up the illusion of her wearing multiple necklaces, since she's skating to Madonna's "Like a Prayer". Oh and I'm glad to hear Mark's voice commentating again. I missed him so much during Skate America! Valtter Virtanen is a lovely story and I loved how he began the whole men's short program competition. Deniss Vasiljevs' skating to Unchained Melody was sweet and smooth except for the fluke fall near the end.

Piper's base level on twizzles is definitely a call deserving some scrutiny. The check she made happens often and usually gets level 1 or 2, not base

Piper's twizzles had the following 4 errors that led to a level base - these are nitpicky but are discernable if you know what you're looking for.
1. In the first twizzle her arm drops below her shoulder which is the loss of a feature.
2. In the second twizzle the rotation is checked, and her arms drop from the out in front in feature which is the loss of 2 levels.
3. In the third twizzle there is another check of rotation which negates that feature.
I didn't get all of these by myself, and have to give credit to Tony & Thomas the Skating Session for putting the slow motion video in their video from the rhythm dance to explain the call.

So am I right to think that if Zingas and Kolesnik win bronze they'd have to score very low by their standards to not make the final over Lajoie and Lagha. A score that would likely put them out of medalling anyway.

(I think the score they need in the free would be 108.81-someone correct me if I'm wrong).


Also- Z/K have a similar season's best to Gilles and Poirier and are achieving the best levels out of anyone here- is it possible they could so better than bronze?

I'm assuming both the Candian and French teams make the podium but I suppose in theory (though not at all likely) they could do badly enough to not make the final...?

A first and a fourth beats a second and a third, so you'd need a fairly exotic free skate result for those two not to make it.

I must say, the only good thing about this TP is that they're calling consistently strict. Not that I know much of ID judging, but that I do understand. I can't help it to note that the RD is not a favourite of mine this year. There are a few nice music choices, but most are not to my taste. That's just me. It takes away from the enjoyment of some of the Dances.

Having said that, I was glad Laurence and Guillaume did not have a silly mistake as they did in France. At first I thought some others would pass them by in scores, but with this TP, it just didn't happen. The Shibutanis are getting better, I expect they will continue to grow throughout the season. But if it's enough for an OG spot? Who knows? I was nicely surprised by Phebe and James, as well as Oona and Gage (mistakes and all), I didn't expect them to do so well because of back-to-back competitions and the travelling in-between (not to mention Phebe and James really hearing it late). Yuka and Juho are always fun, nice music or not, and they showed that here. Diana and Gleb have horrible music (sorry for that to fans), so I was completely distracted and didn't actually watch (time for coffee). I felt really sorry for Natalie and Filip, because of the problems with the music. They skated well in spite of it but it is incomprehensible that not the right cuts, etc. were used. Good to see Olivia and Tim doing better than before. I really enjoyed watching Emilea and Vadym. I don't understand the low level of the twizzles by Piper. I thought they were fine, could have missed a level, but base value? I mean, that's pretty close to getting no level (like Gage who actually made a visible mistake) at all. I enjoyed their Dance anyway, low levels or not. The good thing is, the scores are so close that the FD is probably going to be decisive.

Enjoyable, but strange scoringwise.

My tailbone hurts in solidarity with Rion. That fall was nasty.
Also, the way Rino is judged is so confusing to me. What else the girl have to do to prove her skating skills?? I guess one could argue that she fell this time, sure, but still. Is she significantly slower than other skaters or something that I can't see on the screen but judges can see live?
I really like Adam, despite his less than ideal jump technique, but I feel like this program is not yet polished. Lots of hand waving and frantic movements. Can't wait to see it in second part of this season.
From the beginning of the season Yuma looks like he finally had this realization "Oh wait, I'm the leading Japanese man now, I better start acting accordingly" and he came out of his shell with newfound confidence, both off ice and on ice. As far as performance goes, it is a significant upgrade. If only he could land his jumps

I have to say out of the most popular trio of commentators (Mark/Chris/Ted), I like Mark the best. He is enthusiastic, but not over the top, he highlights strenghts of every skater, including non-jumping elements, hard footwork, quality transitions, he is good at explaining the bigger picture of current skating field and he fills "empty" moments with facts about skaters' background that help viewers get to know them more and understand their struggles and the weight of their success. I can't tell if he is good with pairs and ice dance, because I don't watch them, but in singles I enjoy his company.

Didn't they say themselves that to get to base level, they were being extremely nitpicky and that level 1 was most likely? I read that somewhere in these threads

Tran'kov was interviewing Mironova/Ustenko (RD winners in Omsk) and asked them what they think about levels and results in Finlandia, mentioning their levels were higher than Cizeron's. They tactfully said they didn't watch since they were asleep and work really hard on their technical levels. Tran'kov invited everyone to enter RGP to get their proper levels, lol.

Then how Vadim got same level as Emiliea in his twizzles?

I was concerned for a skater two months ago this skater had lost a lot of weight, NHK had still has extreme weight loss, then now it's really bad. I hope the federation for this skater investigates their entourage. This is wrong.
