2025 JGP Baku Women's Free Skate

Incredible result for Shifrina. I pumped the air when she completed the sequence, although I was a little nervous for her when she popped the final jump. She has made incredible progress each season, and this was an incredible test of her nerves skating last.

Urrrgh, this event was not what I needed to replenish my soul after Skate to Milano.

I actually want to reiterate that this tech panel was odd, for a lack of better words. Some skaters were treated very harshly, while others were treated much more kindly, and not neccessarily the ones I would have expected before the event.

Ope, just looked at the tech panel and things make a little more sense now. I don't want to think badly of people but....

Odd is a good word for it. I was just coming here to ask if the judging seemed strange and unpleasant, or if it was just me. I agree that Haruna's presentation was more "on" at the last event, but otherwise she skated the same and was dropped 16 points? Many low GOEs on fine looking elements, 3 point PCS drop in SP for no apparent reason, 5 point drop in FS. There were strange rotation calls and 10 point TES drops for multiple skaters; even Ted was caught saying he didn't see anything wrong with one of these jumps.

I periodically remind myself that I do not know as much as a figure skating judge, so I never know when something doesn't make sense if it's me or the judges, though I've learned a lot about jump rotation, GOEs, edges, and so on because I want to understand as much as possible. It's always a better experience for me as a spectator and fan when the results make sense, and the results did not make sense here. I agree with Mayuko and Yuseong getting medals, but the scores for them as well as Haruna and Hyewon not so much. In fact, Hyewon looks really good (this is my first time watching her) and I was convinced she would get on the podium when she skated. I've noticed some tech panels have stricter standards, which is mostly okay when applied evenly, but this panel just felt weirdly uneven on top of being harsh. It left an icky feeling behind. Okay, I'm hoping that saying my bit will make me feel a little better so I can move on. Good-bye Baku.
