If you have a slow computer with an old HD then putting the system files on a SSD will speed it up significantly. Even an old-style SATA model will make a big difference.

Mmmm.

The problem is, I wouldn't have a clue how to set up the computer so that the system files are on one drive, and everything else is on another.

It is a SATA drive that is in the desktop.

The thing that is annoying me is that we spent a fortune on it to get all the stuff that used to be included in computers as standard, but now aren't included. And it is not even 6 years old (bought a few months before the pandemic). So, I don't want to buy a new one.

If you are interested in a faster computer then I think an SSD will bring more speed than a faster processor or more ram. Check out if your computer offers an M.2 slot for an NVME model, otherwise a SATA will run alongside your HD. Install the OS on the SSD and you should be fine.
