Wait a sec! I'm a bit confused now. What is it that you are talking about - an underrotation or a prerotation?

I believe that these are two different things scoring wise. "Under", which is determined based solely (unless the rules have changed... Have they? ) on the jump exit is punished by reduced point value. "Pre", which is screwed (literally) jump entry, is just as legit as any other entry under IJS and is merely a disputable jumping technique that is not punished anyhow (except by an edge call when it causes a flutz).

To me, the question (about the claim that Chiba's double Axel was clearly short) is not the short part but the "clearly."

For me, nothing whatever is "clear" when I watch in real time. If qs and URs were "clear" we would not have these endless debates after every competition about, hey, why did my guy get a q but the other guy didn't? We would not be racing to our screen-capture and slo-motion technologies to say, "See? -- the under-rotatation is clear, right? Right? Right?"

A quad jump takes less than a second and in principal rotates 1440 degrees. That works out to a rotational speed of... let's see now... 1440 degrees per second?

How fast can the human eye detect motion? About 30 or so frames per second? Do the math and see whether it is possible to say that a jump is 100 degrees under (q) or only 80 degrees ("fully rotated").

well the TP took a break during men's ... but at the same time, the men delivered.

for the RD.... I have to say I loved Piper and Paul's RD.

I am bummed for LaLa.. they had it in the bag until the last moments.

I like the Lithuanians... I did like the CZE because if you are going to skate to ACDC or any rock, do it with speed and they did... That was a good pick for them.

That was a strong men SP event ! Even Rakic skate not as bad and finish 12th. The 11th skater have a great clean program. Truly a great event ! It would be exiting for the FS.

My mom got her PB on toy throws on that wee bear for Samoilov and Mrazkovs picked my little toy, so today was a perfect day. We had a blast! My god, I love Mrazkovs more than ever, R/A are in the second, Miura didn’t fall, and men totally lit the ice.

Anyway, I can't wait for the ISU to implement the AI measurements. I'm curious about the data that will become available and about how it will change the jumping techniques and figure skating in general.

I thought Gilles and Poirier looked a little muted in the rhythm dance. I think my favourites were the Germans (refreshing to see latin style that's not Ricky Martin) and the Lithuanians who made chuckle throughout.
I did not like that weird AI music the Czech team used in the first half of the program.

I think that even a mark on the ice requires interpretation. A mark compared to what? What is the established direction against which everything is measured? When is the moment of take-off?

Personally, I don't see how a skater can possibly stand up if she hits the ice with the blade turned 90 degrees to the direction of motion (q). Yet they do -- on almost every jump, in fact. The only jump that has full rotations is the old-timey Lutz with its counter-rotation -- that's why it is so hard and why we don't see it any more.

I think that the mark on the ice has to be completed by the direction of the jump, and also looked at closely because the arrival of the jump may not mark strongly from the very landing, and the first light mark may mix with previous marks.
I think that sensors on a blade would be fine because we would have the line of the jump, the instant of the touch on the ice at a really puny fraction of second, there would be no doubt. It's not AI, it's just automatised measurement. The style of the skater, the angle of the landing from the Technical Panel, the position of the foot, wouldn't hamper anymore with the assessment.

Just so happy for Deanna and Max. Some mistakes but 140 + LP which is I believe, the highest score this season on GP so far.

I am impressed at their fight to get that 3t-2a-2a, a new element for them and crucial in the LP.
I was very sad for Pereira Michaud. They had my favourite SP yesterday but the LP was a disaster.

Miniki = uncharacteristic mistakes and with a Max Richter, one note program, they need to be perfect for it to work.

Kam and O'Shea skated their best ever program. She landed her throws (the first one was very low but still landed) .

And nice comeback from Anastasia and Luke.

The victory ceremony was so filled with emotion. To those who think Deanna is too intense, she just wears her heart on her sleeve, in good and bad times. She was full of joy on the podium (the Japanese ISU representative was hilarious btw) and then burst into tears during the anthem. It was cute to see her and Max sing in what looked different languages (she was singing in English and he, in French)

GPF bound.

For women, Mone was everything I was looking for.

I loved Lara's Jaws program.

Ami did enough to qualify to the GPF.

Maddie sort of redeemed herself a bit...

Sara Maude did rotate and land her 3a with a step out... but then lost her confidence and had one of her worst LPs... It is what it is and part of the learning process. It reminds me of Amber when she was going after the triple axel... and well, if she does like Amber, she will eventually land that triple axel perfectly and may then lose her focus for the rest. It's tricky to add such a difficult element in an Olympic season but at the same time, she has nothing to lose and is only 20 and establishing herself this season could be key for the next cycle.

Uliana : congrats to her for dealing with the high pressure event. She's improving but the international judges didn't let anything pass as they should.

I am really tired and cranky. We probably should have just left women's free midway or something. Makes it really hard to look forward to tomorrow, because I am afraid that my worst fears (Mrazkova's skirt, Malinin's illness/fatigue, Miura's injury) would all come to a head and nothing good will happen.

Pairs LP:
Vaipan-Law/Digby: So glad to see them skate so well in the LP. I love this team and was so disappointed for them after the short.

Polish team: Ouch. Just ouch. And I actually think this LP is a bad idea in general since the music makes them look slow.

Laurin/Ethier: This program is a huge step up for this team. It makes them look way more mature and elegant. Some beautiful choreography very well expressed by the skaters. This was the move they needed to make to move forward and up the ranks.

The Swiss team: There was no performance there. The triple twist to open was gorgeous. It took soooo long to get back into the program after the fall. She is so tiny next to him.

Kam/O'Shea: Nice to see them skate so well. They use covers I actually like!

Pereira/Michaud: Sad they couldn't carry the magic from the short, but this wasn't a disaster. I like the program, it's sophisticated and flows really well. I love their entry into the last lift, but they need to work on her air position in the star. Hopefully they can grow this as the season goes, because they are a quality team.

Hase/Volodin: The two falls, of course. Losing the combo was costly. There are some nice highlights in this program, but once again my attention wandered. Did they look a little slow to anyone else?

Deanna/Max: This program is epic for them. Love everything about it. I love her hair, love her gorgeous dress. Love all the highlights, love the music. Good throws, good first jump combo, great lifts. I LOVE how their death spiral goes right into their pairs spin, which for so many is a throwaway element, but Deanna hits such gorgeous positions in it, and with the difficult entry where she doesn't let go of her blade, it's amazing.

And this isn't their ceiling yet. I'm sure they want triple sals, and of course the mistake on the lift that lost them points. Still scoring 140+. Amazing!
