2025 U.S. Nationals Senior Men's Short Program

Maybe I wasn't looking during the women's:) Also when the expensive seats aren't occupied it feels emptier because that's mostly what you see when the skaters are skating. Women's has historically been the best attended. I'm so confused as to why pairs is tonight, but I guess we will see what the attendance looks like.
Judging by the website for available seating, not great. Which is sad. They have been promoting ann upgrade your seats through Prevagen, but honestly not necessary except for last night. Everyone has been upgrading themselves. Including me.

….
Jason Brown - what was his issue? Equipment issues (more like too chicken to even try to compete). I know he placed solidly in the top ten, in the past two Worlds. But, I hate it when athletes use their popularity to secure spots that should be battled out. He hasn’t skated well this season. Something tells me he will nab the third spot even if Jimmy or Camden skate lights out in the free

….

Baloney.

Jason has never ever backed out of a competition due to “fear” so I have no idea where that fake news is coming from. He has however been battling equipment issues all season, but he never likes to make excuses and has been downplaying them. For him to even talk about it now must be extremely frustrating. If he petitions for Worlds and is named, he will be playing by the rules.

And I say that as someone who has been on the Andrew Torgashev train 🚂for over ten years now and who has been trumpeting Jacob Sanchez since he was a 14 year old junior. We can love more than one American man. :)

(sorry about the italics in the quote. On the iPad and not able to fix)

Ilia was amazing indeed and not just for jumping. His post routine interview with A. Joyce was interesting. Always fun to see IM's dad's reactions too. I see that Brandon Frasier (former pairs skater) was in the knc with Torgashev. I think going to Great Park in Irvine, home of Raf A. and in the past Nathan, has helped AT. Brandon coaches there as well.

Jimmy Ma was a surprise but good for him.

As for Tara and J. Weir, I enjoy their commentary.

Anna Scherbackova won the Olympics with equipment issues…. 😡

I understand injuries like with Isabeau. But, to not compete because of an equipment issue is perplexing to me. Then, take the season off.

What I think most likely is happening, is he isn’t ready, right now. But, plans to be ready by Worlds. If he competes right now, he might be out skated and not finish in the podium. That is probably terrifying him. It is much easier and safer to file a petition, and qualify to Worlds automatically, by doing nothing.

I understand filing a petition if you are Ilia, Chock/Bates, Amber and even Ellie/Danny. Isabeau is a Worlds medalist too. So, I’m okay with her too.

But, Jason is current American #3 behind Ilia and Andrew and I find it unfair that nobody else has a chance to qualify for worlds. The team is already set in stone and this angers me.

At the same time, Jason did help with the three spots. So, I understand why the USA would send him, again. But, I don’t think he should be excused from competing at Nationals, due to equipment issues. Especially, if you are the #3.

"Terrified"? Jason? Are we talking about the same person? Someone else I have been following for over ten years, and who has never lied about motivations or issues or problems. If Jason doesn't want someone to know something, he just doesn't say anything. He doesn't offer diversions, he just says nothing.

But in any event, I don't think he will petition unless or until the equipment issues are resolved. No one holds Jason to a higher standard than Jason himself.

Jason didn't confirm that he was petitioning when Phil Hersh asked him. I'd be surprised if he was given that he didn't say yes.

The selection document has this about petitioning (emphasis mine):
(D) Petition Athletes. Athletes/teams who qualified to compete but did not compete or complete both segments of the competition at any of the events listed above due to injury or illness, verified by U.S. Figure Skating medical personnel, may still be considered for selection by petitioning to the International Committee for nomination to the World Team.
Equipment issues may not qualify as a reason to petition. I think Jason would know how likely it would be accepted if he did want to petition.

Come on. Perfect 10.0's for Ilia? Please...

Ilia's great, but he's a jumper.

Also, I agree with what someone else was saying, Brown is using the system to his advantage. Maybe there is a fear to compete. Skip Nationals knowing he'll be included in the World's team like Isabeau pending a couple of run-throughs in training. Why risk competing in Nationals when form hasn't been good? There is literally nothing to gain from Isabeau and Brown to participate in Nationals if they are going to be selected for World's any way (pending those run-throughs in training of course which is a box ticking exercise really).

It's a flaw in the system, we can't blame skaters for using it to their advantage.

There is no proof that Jason Brown is currently petitioning for a spot on the Worlds team at this moment.

He was asked about it directly by Phil Hersh and did not say yes. There is nothing in the document that states that equipment is a valid reason to petition. I have brought up that quote and posted it several times since there is speculation about whether or not he will petition.

Phil Hersh posted about it here - https://bsky.app/profile/olyphil.bsky.social/post/3lg7hdsriok25

That you are continuing your attitude about Isabeau here and bringing it on to Jason when he has not even confirmed that he has petitioned is you looking for controversy when it has not even happened yet.

Fair enough, it will be interesting to see what the selections are for Four Continents, World's, WTT. Has he said he's finished for the season?

Edit. So it does look as though he's planning to compete this year, so it seems he'll be petitioning for Four Continents, World's or WTT. Unless he just plans to skate for pleasure in some local competitions.

Thanks for clarifying this. I thought it was a given he filed for petition. That is what I heard when I listened to the skating lesson podcast. But, it sounds like it was just an assumption.

I will wait to see what happens after the free skate tmrw. I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping Ilia kills it and Andrew solidifies his second place. As for third, I’m torn between Jimmy and Camden.

I can’t wait to watch Jacob Sanchez too and Samuel Mindra too 😜

I think we are jumping the gun a little here. There is no indication that Jason has, submitted or intends to submit any petitions, plus the USFSA rules are pretty clear that his situation does not qualify. As for random speculation about what someone might feel terrified about, or what other emotions might be coursing through him... well, let's see how it all plays out.

I'm all in for Jimmy making the team. I think his move to this coaching team has made the difference. I'm off the Camden bangwagon and Jacob had the silly step sequence slip (I love a forced alliteration) which made it a more difficult climb to the podium. Liam, whom I quite like, is a questionmark always. Free skate here we come.
