At first I was surprised to see Michelle up for some kind of athlete of the year award for the year August, 2006 to August 2007. Since Michelle hasn't skated for a year and a half, what was she being honored for?
Reading the brief article, however, I see that it was the Billie Jean King award for promoting women's sports. Back in the day, Ms. King led the movement to secure equal prize money for women tennis players, and after she retired from play she continued to lobby for euality of girls and women in sports.
I suppose Michelle's activities as spokesperson, role model and U.S. State Department Envoy continue to spread the message.
(Although, in figure skating, at least in the U.S., I think it's the boys who need a pat on the back.)
