Anyone thinking about leaving FS fandom?

I still love the sport itself, and I always will. So I will watch the skating and ignore the judging and outside stuff. Meaning, I will read and post about topics I find joy in, and not read/post about other stuff. This is what I've done for quite a while, actually. GS Fan Fests are wonderful safe havens. It's quite simple, for me at least. The ACTUAL SKATING keeps me interested, and within that, I have only a few favorite skaters per discipline that I follow. I try to focus on that and let all else go.

I know everyone has their own thought process and ways of dealing with things. I want to give everyone a hug. :ghug:
Amen!

Very often, unfortunately. I've been an avid fan since 1968. I started going to Nationals and even Worlds in 1995. Absolutely loved attending. That was back before they started measuring and rooting through bags to make sure you weren't bringing food or drink in. Believe it or not, my first event, 1995 Nationals in Providence, RI, the all-event ticket, for great seats, cost something like $585. I had soooo much fun at that event. Then they started not letting you bring outside food, which really messed it up, ticket prices doubled, and your bag had to be a certain size. I could kind of live with that, but then came COP which effected even watching on TV, and along with that the emphasis on jumps a lot of people can't do and the cookie cutter programs. Pairs used to be my favorite discipline, but that's become ugly lifts and side-by-side splatted triples. My interest is having a really hard time keeping its energy. Now it appears I can't watch Olympic skating because it's on at midnight. I haven't completely given up, but sometimes I think I watch more out of habit. Every time I start getting interested again, they manage to make it even more difficult to be a fan. It is absolutely not fun anymore. I started getting excited during the team comp this year, but now the individual isn't on when I can watch, so...
They don't enforce the bag size rule and I bring food in. I mean if they rooted in my bag they would find it but they don't. For Nationals that is. For Worlds they do enforce. Michelle and I scored some great food from people who didn't want to throw it out in Boston. I mean like EXPENSIVE pastries and such.

Olympics are a worldwide event. They aren't only going to have events at the convenience of one geographical area. Peacock has all events on replay. I just watch when I get up.

I usually just skip the top (Eteri's) Russians. I don't like their skating or choreography, nor the certainty of the final result. For example, if they are in the top 3 after the short, I will just watch until the 4th place skater and be done. I check the result later.
This is exactly how I feel and will be watching the Olympic competition. I've actually been watching figure skating more and more in this fashion lately, in many disciplines, when I used to watch it all (sometimes I find I enjoy the lower groups a lot more than the top ones, surprisingly). I watch the programs I know I'm going to enjoy, and then if I've seen here that someone had an amazing skate, but I've found myself not watching whole competitions this season. I've done that for quite a while in men's and especially women's, for the reasons you note above.

I already left the fandom for two years after the last Olympics because I simply didn't care about jumping girls at the age of 15 with unrefined skating and a big possibilty of retirement before 18. Also, with inflated scores.

Today, I think I will take another long break, mabye even longer.
I don't watch jumping girls at age of 15. I watch Gracie and some of my other ladies favorites.

There are 3 other disciplines I watch much more closely.

The same place the US gymnastics parents were when their daughters were at Karolyi's camp.
Do two wrongs make a right….I bet when these parents found out that they were abused, they were by their sides supporting them not leave them with the cronies that did it to her and do it to her again.

I like Kaori because she's the best SKATER of this generation. Of course she is good jumper too, it's important to have good jumps, but it's not the only skill. Who wants to watch pre-puberty automaton two-foot skate and jump, jump, jump all the time? With high PCS because of corridor? It's gross to watch.

If they ban figure skating from olympics I hope the nationalistic culture will go away and we can see more maturity and balance in skating. Even the Russians have very nice skaters, coaches, and choreographers but the Oly culture force them to abuse many, many girls (not just the ones you see on tv, but all the failed skaters too) just to win medal for mother country. I really hate it.

I checked out most after Sochi (dipped back in for Pyeonchang), then dipped back out. That was solely due to the insane fandom of the Hanyu fans (not to be mistaken for actual Hanyu fans) and the domination of the Russian girls. Probably going to dip back out after this recent mess.

I checked out of Yuzuru's Fan Fest because of the crazy ones. I really like him but the fans actually started to put me off him... so now I just enjoy his skating without venturing there.

The scandal does not put me off watching skating at all. FS was always about drama. I'm really curious if Amrican viewers were put off watching FS by Tonya Harding scandal? I still think there is a lot of good thing in Russian FS, like Moskvina and her Pairs teams and I definitely look forward to it!

I am. I think I'm done, after watching skating for over 30 years. I wrote a post about it in the Kamila thread and someone left a "laughing" emoji reaction. I'm tired of encountering ageism and sexism, and I'm not just talking about that thread. Sorry to say this, because I really have enjoyed this forum, but after catching covid last spring and almost dying from it, I have almost no patience anymore, and don't want to spend my time with doping apologists. If I didn't have respect for a lot of the posters here, I would just let go and post what I really feel, but as Eliza Doolittle said, I'm too lady-like to do so.

I appreciate your post cathlen. Like some people, I wondered if I'd really want to watch the Women's event, based on how I feel about the situation. And although I'm not sure yet if I want to watch every skater - some might be too much right now - I realized I do want to support skaters like Josefin Taljegard, who is so wonderful to watch and has beaten the odds to even be at the Olympics, and Kaori Sakamoto, who is joy on ice and so powerful, and of course Loena, who has come back from injury to have a wonderful season (plus I love that her brother Jorik is coaching her).. And there are others, of course. So I'll be watching even if I have to step away from the screen a bit. And yes, FS does have the drama although sadly this goes well beyond drama, but that discussion is for another thread, of course.

And yes, there are certainly wonderful things in Russian FS - very much looking forward to seeing all the Russian pairs, especially Mishina / Galliamov - and the always enchanting Moskvina in the KnC.

They will not ban figure skating from the Olympics. I don’t know what “Olympic culture” you’re talking about. Skaters represent countries in all events, not just the Olympics. The Olympics are just the most important to the skaters. There are also Worlds, GP, ISU championships etc. They all have skaters represent countries.

Oh for sure two wrongs do not make a right. Not at all. Was just answering the question.

Maybe you should try going to an event where neither of these things are an issue. There are lots of them and they are fun.

Also, part of my reasoning for staying in the fandom is because I've literally known nothing but drama and controversy in figure skating. One of my first memories, if not my first, of figure skating is watching the news at my grandma's and learning about Nancy Kerrigan being clubbed and Tonya Harding's involvement. I can't look away from a trainwreck. How can you be tired of something if it's the norm and you're no longer surprised?

I had to chuckle when I read your post, lol. That’s the exact time that I started watching figure skating, the Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan scandal. I miss the girls like Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen and my most favourite of all time Russian figure skater Irina Slutskaya. And I’m still hanging on..

I don’t usually post new threads, but I have been a huge figure skating fan for almost 50 years. It used to be fun. And I even enjoyed a bit of drama and intrigue, always about the feds and coaches and media, never about the skaters. But now it’s become too much, especially with social media. The fan wars, the cruelty toward skaters for disappointing fans—it just seems all so entitled to me. I couldn’t believe some of the things I read about Karen and Zhou yesterday. Even USA Today “journalist” Christine Brennan, who should know better, piled on. Someone who first reported evidence of allegations of abuse. And now a new skating Cold War seems to be re-emerging. I think this team event has been a horrible influence on the sport. It used to be about admiring skaters from all over the world, not just your own country. (I hated the USA! USA! chant for the stupid hockey game when I was a teen. It seems everyone just needs to grow up and get a grip. It’s no fun either when the results are a foregone conclusion. Nothing is fun about this anymore.
My thoughts are very well aligned with yours, as well as my longevity, though I might have a few years on you.
At the time of the Lake Placid Games, I was all for the USA chant, but the hockey players were amateurs. It was a special and unexpected moment. Gritty. But that chant has taken over in so many arenas and is used to drown out an opposing side. It's became virulent and aggressive.
Speaking of drowning out, the Sochi fans who were trying to drown out skaters' music so they couldn't hear it while skating their programs. Boorish, aggressive, unnecessary. So, I guess I hate the evolution of fandom. I have no wish to be at skating events any more. The intolerance makes me fearful.
There's no openness to others in that tactic, which is where we are right now.
On the other side, I also am fearful of fans projecting themselves onto the objects of their fandom, such that we see fans defining what specific skaters "need", "wish", "feel" even if they've never met them or have no personal knowledge. I would feel a lot more comfortable if the fans in question are aware they are confusing themselves with the objects of their admiration. Perhaps it's social media that has brought us to this. At any rate, the projections of fan fantasies onto skaters I find very troubling. It, too, lacks awareness and appreciation for "other".
IMO These two forces are combining right now into nationalistic fandom with fan assumptions that they know what's best for a skater. This opens the pathway to abuse, especially of abuse of young people, since they are in some ways blank slates as yet, and easy to project onto.

I won't be watching the remainder of the skating events of this Olympics. Really, I've had it, and it's been many decades that I've stuck with watching the sport.

On the question of the team competition, I wish there were more teams. For those nations that don't end up in the top 5 (and therefore allowed to move into the FS portion)... it's, like, the top 5 and everyone else. Supposing instead, there were more countries, and each country got to pick 3 disciplines, their choice. Strategy could be fun!
It would also be fun to have mixed groups, where maybe 3 skaters from a large geographical region formed a team. This would let some of the smaller federations get involved, too. Supposing, for instance, we had a Scandinavian team, or a Latin American team, or a Southeast Asian team not from the traditional powerhouses.
