Cecilia Colledge | Golden Skate

Cecilia Colledge

Thanks for posting that. I have never heard of her but she seems to be a great skater. I would love to have been around during those times.

She was the inventor of the layback and camel spins, if I recall correctly.

Colledge would have been the favorite in the 1940 Olympics, had the games been held. She was the 1937 World Champion (after Henie retired) and the European Champion in 1937, 1938 and 1939.

When championship skating returned after World War II, European figure skating was in a shambes, never fully to recover. Canadian Barbara Ann Scott won the 1947 European Championship, America Gretchen Merrill was second, and at the 1947 World Championship, also won by Scott, four of the top six were North American.

Rest in peace Cecilia! My condolences to her family and friends.

She gave a lot to FS!!! Layback and camel spin, one-foot axel, first double salchow!
