Not everyone need a constipated look to look like they have soul. Truly mastery is about showing enough rather than showing too much.

Mack the knife is a morose song anyway, cold hearted killer, a murder ballad. Think of the TV shows like Dexter. That despite outward normal cool controlled appearances of the unassuming man, there's alot of internal brewing and boiling waiting to unleash. This one does it with an upbeat song over something darker with a killer instinct. It is with the efficiency, quickness and slight of blade skills, it belies the masterful killer.

Who said I wanted Chan to have a constipated look? Matilda has said it more articulately. Patrick always exhibits great skill and choreography, I but I feel at this point -- it's only September -- there isn't that connection. He is more than capable...his Elegie SP is a great example.

In other words, he knows he is to be slick and cool and is playing the part, but eventually, I believe he will just be slick and cool.

 Of course you know the usual suspects of who I am really referring to :P

Actually Machida's 'style' has often been guilty of that constipated over emoting in his over dramatic programs. So what did he say exactly I am curious? Sound rather Diva like criticism? Over emoting has always been rather ridiculous and pantomime to me but many people seem to enjoy it but I always go

An over emoting serial killer calling attention to himself sound as bad as the idea of an over emoting vampire to me ;)

 I didn't even know that constipation was an emotion

:) But in os's defense, she didn't call it an emotion but said that not everyone needed a constipated look to look like they had soul.

Somehow I've always disassociated the lyrics of Mack The Knife from the song, choosing to just enjoy and appreciate the music and vocal renditions of this ballade. I'm not sure how and if the various singers really convey the dark words in the song but I do think a powerful voice does it best.

The footwork and choreography of this program are amazing and extremely difficult. With his elegant and seemingly effortless glide over the ice, Patrick can do an authentic "cool" with this song. The performance will only get better over the season.

My point is, I'm fine with him being a cool and slick killer, but I don't think he is there yet. He is playing the part for now. However it's September and I fully expect him to get there as the season goes.

Speaking strictly of this particular performance. As I've said, I've seen that soul, that authenticity before in other performances.

I agree. There is lots of great stuff here.

No, where is a emoticon for "scared and terrified"?

Which performances and which skaters have the authentic soul of a serial killer that Mrs. P has seen?

Patrick will get his PCS even without that last spark to his performance because he's the best man of the field in SS.

What he really should focus on right now (if he wants to win against hanyu and not only touch our hearts with his performance), is to change his coaching situation!!!!!!!!

As I see it, he still has the same strenghts and weaknesses to his skating as before the break. If he wants to win, he must change that because we have seen that with his troubles on the 3axel and stamina/ focus/ peaking issues he's definetly not going to win over hanyu with his 2 3axels in the second half.

Get a real technical coach who's also going to politic for you Patrick! Otherwise you can forget that gold medal in 2018!

Go to Brian - he probably will be delighted to coach someone of your level! Compete with Javi and Hanyu on a daily basis to know where you stand and push yourself.

Or go to another technical coach, but you have to change to envolve!

Spark. Thank you Eclair. I probably used the wrong words. But yes, that is what I'd like to see in Patrick's performance as the season goes on. Good points on tech too.

If you want an authentic rendition, check out Lotte Lenya's version in German. (Lotte Lenya was Kurt Weil's wife, and is mentioned in the song -- along with "Lucy Brown", whoever that is. )

As for whether Patrick is actually depicting a pathological killer with a cool exterior -- I think we are the ones who are trying to put that on Patrick based on knowledge and expectations outside the actual performance. I agree with Skatefiguring more so than with os168 on this point -- it's just a cool art/jazz song to skate to.

I wouldn't say Brian is a technical coach, more like polishing coach, Brian has too many high level skaters already, if he took on Patrick it would be unfair to Patrick, Yuzuru, Javi and Nam because then they would all get less attention from him, I can't see how that can be a good coaching situation for all of them. Lee Barkell is also at the TCC and doesn't have as many high level students, maybe him. I don't see him switching anytime soon though.

Good points MM. I will check out the German version sometime. :)

Though I much prefer Patrick's skating to Hanyu, it's difficult to predict the result of any head to head competition. I believe Patrick's time off improves his artistry and he will get his jumps back, though it usually takes time to adjust and get back to competition shape, physically and mentally, when a skater returns to competition. Hanyu has the definite advantage of higher BV but his ability to executive all planed elements to be fully credited is hard to tell, due to his very ambitious layout and low stamina. He's also more injury prone and has more health issues than Chan. With inflation and cap, the PCS gap is narrowed between the two. These days it's mostly the ceilingless TES that determines competition placements.

It will be an exciting rivalry.

@Krunchii Brians strenght is indeed the polishing but also preparing his skaters for the mental game and politic for them. In addition if Patricks jumps get as consistent as Nams or Javis ( who was terribly inconsistent before he got to brian) it would be a real improvement for patrick.

As for the time issue - 15 min. A day with Brian and training with Hanyu and Javi all day is way better than zero time with them and training all day with his current dance coach, don't you think?

In actual situation Patrick MUST nail 3A to think about competing with Hanyu, and then he must be consistent and count that Hanyu bombs his layout. In ideal scenario Patrick would need two diffrent quads and two 3A
Patrick still holds the best score for LP, but we all saw at GPF that Hanyu can break 200 even with two quads, not mentioning he will be attempting 3 this season
