Chinese Pairs(Shen/Zhao etc) Update

Update from Shen/Zhao's blog

Nov 6, 2006

Today is our first practice session in Nanjing. We only did some simple practice, running through each element, mainly to get used to the ice. We are the only two national team members who have never been to this rink before. All the other team members were here last year to compete for the national championships. This is a brand new Olympic size rink and it is beautiful.

The hotel we’re staying in is also quite nice, close to the lake, but we haven’t got a chance to look around. The only inconvenience is that the hotel is a bit far from the rink. It takes 30 minutes’ drive to get there. Okay, time to say goodbye, we’ll have another practice session tomorrow.

Will you like shen/zhao's new music?

I don't think I'll like them. The music they're going to use this season seems too soft. I don't like them to skate to very soft music with no climax. I believe their style is more suited for music with at least some dramatic moments. I like their 03/04/05 music selections, they were all brilliant. The music they skated to Olympic games was pretty mediocre. Perhaps their flawed performance due to injury had an impact as well on the impression of their music as well.

I don't like them to skate to 'meditation'!

Pang/Tong & Shen/Zhao Update

Pang/Tong according to their blog Nov 8, 2006

Good news! We seem to have found renewed confidence after the past several days' good training. We've been in the 'zone' for the last couple days, and can hit throw/sbs jumps 90% of the time, which was pretty consistent. The endurance is still a problem due to lack of systematic training. Yesterday, we felt quite tired even our training only lasted an hour or so. Maybe it's because we're getting excited...

Anyway, we really hope everybody will like our new short program. Although it's still not smooth enough, we want to present a new chereograph style in this short program.

Shen/Zhao according to their blog Nov 7, 2006

We had our second practice session today. We did some dry-land exercise outside the hotel in the morning. In the afternoon, we went to the rink, we were supposed to have two practice sessions, but we decided to do only one. We ran through the short program once, then did some practice of single elements. We feel good but he(zhao) was a bit faster than I. Maybe it's because the competition is close and we are getting nervous!

11/18/2006 diary

This is an excerpt from shen/zhao's latest diary.

... Our next training will be focused on solving the problems exposed in 'Cup of China' competition. We got some very positive feedback from an ABC commentator from Canada(must be a mistake, should be U.S.) in Nanjing. Peter told us he thought our stroking has improved a lot this year and he asked us the reason. I told him that's because we got some serious training time in basic stroking. (lousy translation) We sought some help from a Canadian chereographer(or ice dancing coach??).

We really worked very hard in Canada when doing chereography there. We had to spend 6-hour on ice every day including some very labour-intensive stroking lessons. It was quite painful! However we're very happy now. Our efforts have paid off. Xue's tears are not wasted! It's time to go to training session again. Have a happy weekend.

I don't know whether 'stroking' is what zhao really refers to since it's getting quite murky in Chinese jargon. The gist is that they did focus a lot on basic skating skills.
