Did Patrick Chan drop the F*** bomb?

Sitting on a panel, or standing at rink-side taking pictures, I have heard many more than one "naughty" word coming from skaters on the ice, and as Rhett Butler and Fozzie Bear so eloquently put it, frankly my dear I too don't give a damn (as long as they aren't swearing at me).

Am I to assume that you have NEVER used a four-letter word under your breath? If you are under the age of 70, I find that hard to believe, especially if you hang out in the sports world or with teenagers.

But obviously you do not know Patrick. He has a triple axel. I have seen it and it is beautiful. So it is not consistent yet. Give him time. He is only 16 and has grown a lot. Lesley Hawker didn't get any triples until she was 18. And look at her now!

I've never heard Patrick, his coaches or his family - say he is the next 'GREATEST' male skater. Sure he has ambition, but that doesn't mean ego....let's see where he takes his tremendous talent and work ethic.

As for a mini-Jeffrey Buttle -- you can't get a nicer guy than Jeff. Always kind to everyone. I remember talking to Jeff at Canadians (he wasn't the golden boy just yet)when he was a few years older than Patrick ...and Jeff hasn't changed much since then. Fame didn't ruin him.

I appreciate your tone, but your defense of Patrick Chan's behaviour is a bit lame.Did I say I've never used four-letter word? I simply stated it's very inappropriate for him to utter that F*** word in front of cameras! I don't think that's a high order. Just imagine if Mira Leung were caught on tape like that, this board would have exploded...

Patrick Chan's 3A is the same as Jeffrey Buttle's quad at this stage. No. He does not have a 3A unless he lands one on a relatively basis in competitions.

I certainly read in a previous interview that described how Patrick, his old coach and others all sort of believed he'd become the greatest one. It also revealed details of how his former coach was grooming him for things like shaking hands with future kings or queens... I'm too lazy to dig out that article.

Did I say Jeffrey Buttle was a bad guy? On the contrary, I praised him as being a gracious athlete. So I don't understand your point.

Anyway, we'll see what direction this everybody's-golden-boy Patrick Chan will take in the future.

I don't think that Patrick Chan, or really ANYBODY at this point, is my next "golden boy", so kindly keep your generalizations a little more limited.

And I recall an ice dancer, who I have always enjoyed watching, utter a "Sh*t" at the end of the FD at World championships a few years ago. Gave me a chuckle. I certainly wasn't offended or looking at branding the person with some kind of "attitude problem". If I caught Mira dropping an "F-bomb", I'd probably be more impressed with her as a person than I am with her as a skater. Period.

I lightly drop the F-bomb like half of the times I fall. ;)

But, no, I really would NOT in front of cameras.

As reported on Rutland Weekend Television....

Actually, what he said was "E Burris Stegano",which is very bad Spanish for "Have you a waterbuffalo?"

Well, I am sure if Patrick did utter a swear word it was under his breath. It's a good thing Mr. Coulson (his former coach who passed away recently) was not there to hear. I am sure he would take Patrick to task over that. As for skaters expressing themselves in the Kiss and Cry, one of the worst offenders had to be Canadian pairs team member Lloyd Eisler. He really used to get angry with the judges and did not spare his feelings on camera.

Patrick was probably being hard on himself for not having a good skate. I am sure as he progresses he will learn to handle this part of the media coverage better. He seems like a nice enough kid.

If you had ever known Osbourne Coulsen, the ultimately well-bred gentile gentlemen from the really old school of skating and society......you would say that tongue-in-cheek. So formal, so proper - Mr. Coulsen was such a delight with his outlook on life and emphasis on 'proper behaviour'. He probably groomed all his skaters for shaking hands with future kings or queens.

In fact, since when is that a bad thing?? I'm not a world champion or next-greatest skater-----but I HAVE shaken the hands of many members of the royal family, including Prince Charles - who may be King , a number of prime ministers and a former US president or two.........My guess is that Patrick has skaken the hands of a few important people as well. He does belong to the Granite and Cricket Clubs, two of the most elitest, expensive private clubs in Canada and its membership includes Canadian establishment and rich & famous alike.

So learning how to properly shake the hand of dignitaries is a positive skill!!!

Regarding watching what one is saying (or mouthing) with TV cameras present:
I would rather suspect that if one is "in the zone", concentrating on their skating and the competition at hand, and the ensuing marks, one probably even forgets they're on television, at least temporarily. Seems to me that would pretty easy to do under the circumstances, with everything going on and everything you need to concentrate on under those conditions.

Uh, I don't see what's the fuss about? Like we don't ever say the f word in real life? As if people would say it less if Patrick didn't say it in front of the TV? Geez.

As for the comparison with Mira Leung. Well, Patrick IS the future of Canadian mens skating IMO. As little as I liked his Lori Nichol programs this year, he IS an amazing skater.
