Evgeni Semenenko

Zhenya successfully entered the medical university. Not sure what he's going to do. I mean, it's impossible to combine medicine and figure skating.
Well done Zhenya! :points: Is it possible for him to skip this year at uni and keep his place for next year? But even then, how will he manage to make it work with his training and competition schedule? Afaik, Finnish figure skater Valtter Virtanen also studied medicine while competing and is now a MD. I believe he attended uni in München, and trained in Oberstdorf. So it can be done.

It's hard to answer this question but as a student I'll try to explain his situation.

Firstly, he like many other students decided to sign a special contract with the company. This means that the company will pay for his studies but he'll have to work here later. He didn't get a very high score on the exam so this is the only way to study for free.
Secondly, it's possible to take a sabbatical. I think even for two years (as Chen did). But he can also get rejected because of the contract.
Thirdly, this is one of the best medicial universities in Russia. It's very difficult to study here.

I don't understand what he's going to do. For sure, he will compete this season. He got his programs (including gala) even before his exams. So, I'm confused a bit. The results of the exams are relevant for four years. He didn't have to go to university this year. Petr Gumennik also wants to get a profession related to medicine but he postponed it. Alena did the same because it's Olympic season. Zhenya's mother graduated from the same university so I hope they know what they're doing.

What if he stays in figure skating instead of medicine? It's is possible. He can terminate the contract but he'll have to reimburse the tuition fee.

This situation makes me feel that he probably won't continue after the Olympics. Hope he'll say something about this in an interview.

Of course Zhenya has to do what is right for him, but I would be sad if he indeed decided to end his career after the Olympics. He could easily go on for another cycle. And lets say he makes it into the Olympic team this season and makes it into the top ten or even top five, which is entirely in the realm of possibility? With some of the top men likely retiring after the Olys this would set him up nicely as a top contender for the big titles in the coming seasons. After all the work he put into figure skating since childhood, I can't imagine him just calling it quits.
But only time will tell I guess.
In the meantime I'm getting more and more excited to finally see his new programs, especially the Master and Margarita. Still another month until test skates. :dbana:

There're English subtitles for the challenge.

 This was so funny! And Zhenya answered so many questions! I should track down the original and see if I can use it to practice my Russian.

Zhenya's going to Finlandia right? Hope the costume change works this time!

Congratulations on winning the bronze medal at Skate Canada  Zhenya fought hard for everything, that's commendable, although I hope he has less to fight for in the future. I like his M&M program and so obviously does Zhenya, he understands what he's skating and performs. He's also such a nice guy from every interview of him I've seen and an incredibly hard worker. Apparently the longest stretch of free time he has in a week between his training and study is 6 hours. I found it amusing that when asked which superpower he would like he immediately answered "teleportation because it would say travel time".

I finally found the time to watch Zhenya's free skate at SCI, and I am utterly blown away. He's improved on the performance so much, no sign of nerves and full commitment to the choreo! Lol at him forgetting all about the costume change in the heat of the moment (or they decided to take it out of the program, I'll see at Cup of Austria, I guess). And he has a the unique quality of hanging on to stuff. Even if a jump isn't landed perfectly, he still manages to squeeze out a combo. This is so important for getting the points. And with each performance he'll gain confidence, so he can do the jumps perfectly by RusNats and onwards! ;)

Mishin says Zhenya was skating with an injury after hard fall on 4 Flip in practice

Speedy recovery to Zhenya! 💐
Under these circumstances his bronze is even more laudable. I also must admit, the thought of him adding a 4F to his already impressive quad arsenal got me rather excited. If he has it stable by RusNats, everything would be possible.

Thanks so much for sharing @AlexBreeze :thank:
Zhenya is really inspiring, how he manages to attend uni, be an internationally successful figure skater and still remains a down-to-earth lad. Hopefully he can achieve everything he aspires to this season. Also, now I'm contemplating whether I should paint a last minute fan banner for Zhenya for the Cup of Austria, since he seems to like them. Other skaters in the past have said that they don't notice anything in the arena when they are in competition mode, so I've never bothered with banners before, though I have been known to throw the occasional stuffie.

Some photos from Zhenya back in practise:

I am so glad that he is able to train again and will likely be ready for GP Rostelecom. Health comes first, but I missed him dearly at CS Austria. :( Hopefully he doesn't decide to retire and focus on uni after the Olympic season, he still has so much to give to figure skating and I still hope I'll get the chance to watch him live one day.
