Figure Skating Anime

Nope, the ending music is "You Only Live Once"

I've definitely heard that theme before in the show though... I'm not sure where.

ETA: I know. It's the music that plays when you enter the official website of the anime. I visited the site before the first episode aired, which is why I remembered it but couldn't place it immediately.

So I didn't know that Funimation had already licensed this show and streamed the first episode dubbed on the 24th. I almost want to buy the subscription for their site just for this show alone. http://www.funimation.com/shows/yuri-on-ice/home

Has anyone else heard of a scenario where an anime gets licensed so quickly and the dub starts streaming just a few weeks behind the Japanese episodes cause this feels like a first to me? Usually the dub is at least a full season behind the release in Japan because companies wait and see how much success it has before they start trying to obtain the license. This must REALLY say something about how much attention this show is getting *crosses fingers for more seasons*

ETA: Okay Danganronpa 3 was quickly dubbed but Funimation had already dubbed the Danganronpa anime adaptation of the first game so I can see how and why that was a bit accelerated.

The skaters "cameo" was a nice touch  the 6 men at the GPF, Meagan and Eric at SC, Gabriella and Guillaume at TDF :)

I really liked this episode. There was less fan-service (which is good!) but it's chock full of outlines of the character development for the two Yuris and Victor. J-Yuri to start and opening up to the people that continues to support him. R-Yuri throwing away his pride. LOL at Yakov's ex-wife being his new coach. What a great twist! We also see a more "human" side of Victor. He is at his peak of his career. Where else can he go when he's at the top already? Interesting to say that his situation reminds me of Yuna after Vancouver.

Anyway, the cute doodles made me smile. I cackled at the picture where all of last year's GPF finalist were drawn. Although I wished they got a bit more indepth with the domestic competitions, I think they gave great background info about the season. Can't wait to see who Prichit is!

^I wonder how censored the English dub will be.

I thought this episode was an interesting one, because there was a lot more explaining of actual figure skating stuff - like the scores and the competition setup, almost as though the creators have been paying attention to the fandom and realised that a lot of people who know very little about skating are watching. (Thank goodness they're explaining some things). I got plenty of laughs out of the assignments section. The reactions. That's basically us every June. Though I could also pick out problems: Yuri, having qualified for the GPF the season before, would surely have a bye to Nationals, wouldn't he? Also, I'm surprised they didn't give him NHK.

Victor's expressions are still my favourite thing. And he was VERY Plushy this week, with the talk about getting music specially written for him.

I am not sure I'm liking the R-Yuri arc. It was so very interesting for his character development when he had the Agape program and the development that came with that. I'm not sure the whole selling his soul to win thing works with that context. We'll see.

I think Yakov is not Mishin, but Mila is either Ashley or Liza or possibly a combination of the two.

Selfishly, I wish that if they were going to have skaters from unusual countries (Thailand?!), they had included an Australian skater. Wouldn't Brendan just make the most adorable anime character?!

OT: I was also so happy to log into CR tonight and find that they are having Dragon Ball Super now. :yes2:

I pressed "pause button" of my remort control for the first time. I thought I saw familiar skaters for an instance and I was not wrong

So I watched episode 4 first with English subs, then watched it with Chinese subs, and I think the English subbed version has more fog during the bath scene... is that some sort of censoring?

Edit: So I checked again, the English subbed version has the fog, and the Chinese subbed version has two extra pieces of rock... :laugh2:
/waiting to see the raw version :o:

Victor's expressions are the best! I love how interacts with his dog and the scene at the ice rink when Yuri K touched his hair. And I immediately thought of Plushy and Edvin Marton, too! I was also really amused when Yuri named his piece Yuri on Ice because I couldn't help but think of The Best of Plushenko.

Awww, he would! He's got the hair for it! Shame there's no Australian skater, even in the background...But I am looking forward to seeing all the other skaters in the next few episodes.

The reactions were fab. I had to pause at the triplets, and then mother yelling at them, then with them. The ex-wife is so Maya Plisetskaya.

I think there's probably going to be a twist with the R-Yuri arc related to emotions during a program. It's J-Yuri's best strength after all and something R-Yuri couldn't do. But, about R-Yuri, one thing I really loved was the talk about his body changing. Honestly, I didn't think they would go there but kudos for doing so. I think this part is definitely coming from his inspiration Yulia. Overall this idea that there is a very limited time for all of them, later showing Victor and then J-Yuri which is true and I am really glad they're trying to explain that part of figure skating, how difficult it is, that shot of J-Yuri's feet too.

I'm still very interested in Victor. The beach scene wasn't just fan-service I think. He asked J-Yuri a very peculiar question and got a very poignant answer I think. He asks - what role do you want me to play, so an act, and gets an answer that he should be Victor, which for him I think is important considering that I think he's having trouble finding himself at this point. I like their dynamics. This was an excellent episode!

Was it only for me that Thai skater looked a lot like Yuzuru in his training outfit ? I liked this episode, they even made it realistic that the moment of GP lists being published is at night in Japan :) And triplets are everything this anime needed

Given the GP assignments they got, I think the plot will go smth like this: J-Yuri win CoC, but at CoR R-Yuri wins and J-Yuri places second. They both qualify to GPF and then J-Yuri wins over R-Yuri, so they both have one win over each other, with J-Yuri fulfiling his dreeam of winning GPF  In anime they love to make a protagonist lose at some point only to comeback stronger

I have to admit, I still don't quite get the whole "Grand Prix Final is the super best competition bigger than Worlds!" kind of storyline they've got going on, as if GPF is the be-all and end-all.

It makes for better story telling. Now there is more than one step to the end goal... rather than "get picked by your federation". The GPF has a path to it... worlds is more of a selection process. Now they have an excuse to show GP events... if it was worlds as an end goal the GP events would be less important/more of a side quest. Path to the GPF keeps them more as main story quest.

Plus... Hanyu usually wins the GPF, not the world title.

^^
That and there is also always the possibility that they left the World's for season 2 if it happens. The author said she doesn't know, they're waiting to see if it'll be green lit.
