Figure Skating Anime

Trust me. Boundaries will be pushed and we will get moments, and we will all fall for Yuuri/Viktor. Because, hell, HOW CAN YOU NOT?! But they won't end up together. Officially. I'm not arguing that they aren't gay okay hahaha it's a very real possibility considering everything.

But if you want what I consider "groundbreaking" in terms of homosexual subtext, just check out Hibike! Euphonium, one of my favorite anime ever -- it's a series that I was CONVINCED will end up yuri but did not (hehehehe...yuri). And I was frustrated, because the chemistry, the moments, the hints... but nope.

At the end of the day, Japan is still conservative about these things (which is upsetting!!), and I'm not saying I'm NOT into Viktor/Yuuri... I'm just saying, it's not gonna happen canonically. Which is okay, because advertiser's money is important.
And the homosexual subtext will persist. And "boundaries will be pushed" and all the moments that you posted will still have that tinge of romance.
Fandom will always fan our flames for the romance. For what it's worth I'm a bit into Phichit/Yuuri myself, lol!

Anyway, I haven't watched episode 5 yet, but I'm excited to see it because as Maria Polonius said: lots of skating. Yay!

Being both an anime and figure skating fan I cant help but feel a little sad that the animation is losing power. MAPPA (the studio that created YOI) has done beautifuly animated series before but it seems like they didnt save enough budget for YOI. Nothing that cant be fixed on a BR release but still, the animation on the first episode was gorgeous and I wish we get something like that again for the finale.

They're probably saving the hardcore animation for the bigger competitions, like the GPF. I found the animation in episode 4 quite stunning.

God, I love anime sometimes.

To be honest, I don't watch anime very often and I started watching this only because the story focuses on figure skating (and I don't have any favorite character here...maybe Yuri from Russia if I pick one). But episode 5 was very interesting to me and probably I'll be into the skaters themselves more from now on. Next week, Cup of China, yay!!

I guess I like the competitions after all

Wow, I actually loved following the competition.
It's so interesting to see the perspectives of the skater, coach, and other observers as a performance is taking place, and what's going through their minds... We don't often get that luxury when we watch competitions in real life.
I'm wondering what kind of PCS Yuri got to score 94 on the short program with a pop and a step-out, though. :laugh2:
Great episode, can't wait for Cup of China!

P.S. Minami is ADORABLE. And his free skate is ADORABLE-ER.

My Thursdays are perpetual torture because the episode comes out before I go to work, but I don't have time to watch it before I go, so I have to spend the whole day at work waiting, and waiting, and staying spoiler free...

Anyway, I really liked this episode. I liked how Yuuri came to realise that he inspired others, like Victor inspires him. The little sub-arc with Yuuri and Minami was so sweet. I also liked Victor's moment when he realised he could be like Yukov, and all the things he did not like about Yukov, or he could react in his own way to Yuuri.

But I still laughed my backside off at the moment where Victor stepped away from the hug because he did not want to get Yuuri's nosebleed on his suit :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: Victor's reactions are just still the best.

This episode was also really fanservice-y, though, and I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the skating animation. Could we just please get some consistent body proportions while they're skating? It was especially obvious in Minami's FS, where his torso looked really long and his arms looked tiny.

Ahhh I just finished watching episode 5! I LOVED Yuri's interview at the end ["Viktor is the only person I've wanted to hold on to"] AGH the feelings.

Minami is a cutie! Phichit is interesting. Watching the thought processes of the skaters and the coaches was more entertaining than I expected!
Looking forward to seeing Yuri's FS clean!!
The 4T to the boards looked painful lol.

I usually love yaoi, but I think the fan service in this one is a bit over done. It might be because this is the first anime that focus on the sport I love , so I want it to be focus mainly on skating.
Mte I find it over the top

Victor being a troll with the hug is my fav moment )))))) & all the scenes of him being a coach & feeling so important )))))))))

& nosebleed scenes make me uncomfortable bc I sometimes experience it irl & really can't associate it with anything positive...brrrr

I just realized something I should have known all along, but it took me a while to connect the dots.

The creator of YOI is Mitsurou Kubo, an artist that has already been mentioned in Tatsuki Machida's fan fest thread two years ago. Kubo was a big Machida fan and she traveled to Nagano for the 2014 Japanese Nationals just to see him. She never imagined he was going to retire and she was so frustrated with his decision she went out and wrote "Tatsuki Baka" in the snow ("Tatsuki you fool"). Then she quickly improvised a banner and wrote "Tatsuki daisuki da-!!" ("Tatsuki I love youuu") which is visible during his exhibition program at the gala

After that she was invited to a TV show where she showed drawings of everything that happened at 2014 Nationals while singing "Let It Go" and simply replacing the lyrics with the skaters' names, it was hilarious.

Who knew her adventures at the 2014 Nationals would inspire a figure skating anime?

I just saw this article in the site I regular visit for Anime news

What's So Gay About Yuri!!! on Ice?

There's a very simple answer to this question, but it might not answer much all by itself. Yuri!!! on Ice stars two complex characters of the same gender who harbor a directly sexual and romantic attraction to each other, in a relatable story that does not fetishize or exoticize these feelings. That might not sound all that complicated or unique by itself, and I definitely have to add the Big "But" that this answer is based entirely on visual cues rather than any direct text as of the show's first quarter.

It compares the anime with others in this season. Also I must say the content of the article is not negative at all, if you are offended by the tittle

I was pretty uncomfortable with the coach student relationship, but this week watching him tell Yuri he was willing to meet him where he wants to be was just beautiful.

Late to the party, but I didn't expect to be charmed by it so much. Normally I don't care for yaoi and detest fan service, but the show doesn't seem to fetishize or cheapen the attractions between two interesting characters. The FP music for Yuri is surprisingly good, it's silky, fluid and melts in your heart. I expect to see more thought processes and inner conflicts that makes following sports so addictive (after all, I enjoy reading coaches and skaters' interviews as much as I enjoy their performances since they're brilliant minds). However, I was under the impression from the first episode that the show is produced by a skating fan, probably a Tatsuki fan and the produces don't settle for a fluffy, generic dime a dozen sport anime and I'm glad to read the background story from Ioanna.

I found out that there is actually an English Dubbed version of the anime and I decided to check it out because why not and

i'M ON THE FLOOR AND IN TEARS

I CANNOT with the russian accents. Totally priceless, this is even greater than I expected, oh lord. :drama:
It makes everything, especially Yurio, extra hilarious, although Victor's voice seems quite awkward comparing to the japanese version. I'm having flashbacks of the times I watch skating in a russian stream and Tarasova is screaming her lungs out.

It's 3 freaking AM here and I'm controling myself to not laugh out loud and not succeding.

And why Yuri doesn't have a Japanese accent? If we're going to do accents why not go all out? :laugh2:

I see that I'm going to have to watch 2 versions of the episodes because I can't miss this.

Here's where I'm watching this version: http://gogoanime.io/yuri-on-ice-dub-episode-1

Also, I love Minako so much in this version I'm dying.
