Figure Skating in Cyprus

I've already posted this in her own thread, but there was a very interesting full-length interview with Stefania in today's Cyprus Mail:

https://cyprus-mail.com/2024/07/12/isnt-if-you-can-survive-in-figure-skating-you-can-do-anything/

Unfortunately, there are no hints about her plans for the Junior GP Series.

But the reason I am also cross-posting about it here is that she mentions that a company is building a rink in the Limassol region. She then adds "I would really like the project to be completed and the local authorities to support the initiative, if there was a skating rink in Cyprus I could live at home".

Back in 2016, the Amathusia club drew up plans to build a rink in Mouttagiaka. So, I wonder if this is a resurrection of that project. I wouldn't be surprised. If any of the clubs were to do it, they are the most likely. The Amathusia club does seem to have become the main club on the island.

Fingers crossed that the rink does open. If there was a decent sized rink, it would do wonders for the development of the sport on the island.

As you can see, in previous seasons when Cyprus had two Junior GP slots and more than one skater in the running, what they did was to split the assignments.

So I am guessing that this means Stefania and Varvara will be switched for the fourth round in Turkey, i.e Varvara will be down to go to Ankara, and Stefania will be down as the substitute.

But, this is just me speculating.

Whatever happens, I am looking forward to seeing the girls in action this season.

EDIT (17th August 2024): Varvara has replaced Stefania at Czech Skate. The table has been edited acccordingly.

EDIT (19th August 2024): The skaters for Cyprus in the Provisional Entry List for the Junior GP in Ankara have been added to the table.

It's 15th August again, the anniversary of Cyprus gaining independence from the UK in 1960. And, as usual, I am using this anniversary as an opportunity to do my annual refresh of the Fan Fests of the skaters from Cyprus.

This year, the refresh involves creating three new threads!

As Varvara Abramkina is moving up to Junior level, and is likely to be making her Junior GP debut in just over a month from now, I have moved the posts about her out into a new thread dedicated to her:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/threads/98885

The other two threads are actually for skaters who are no longer competing. Recently, I was looking at the protocols from the inaugural Cyprus Championships in 2013, and I discovered that, although the results tables state that Polina Ustinova was the only skater competing in Advanced Novice Ladies, there were actually two other skaters taking part, and they both finished ahead of her. Both of these skaters were Russian girls representing the Amathusia club.

The FS winner and overall runner-up, Polina Mozokhina, moved up to Junior Ladies straight after Nationals, and she represented Cyprus in international competitions during the 2013–14 season. After serving the 18 month embargo for switching countries, she started representing Austria in Senior Ladies in late 2015. After retiring, Polina has gone on to be a successful coach in that country, with students including the Ruis siblings. Here is her thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/threads/98886

The SP winner and overall champion, Anastasia Nosova, switched from ice skating to inline roller skating in 2016. And she has gone on to win all the Major championships in that branch of the sport. Here is her thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/threads/98887

Unfortunately, Nastya's thread was a frustrating one to compile, because looking for results and scores for roller skating competitions is like looking for hen's teeth. We often complain when Entries / Results pages for figure skating competitions get deleted. But it happens even more frequently in roller skating. And with roller skating being an even more obscure sport than ice skating, there are no fan-run databases like Rink Results or Skating Scores. Thankfully, Nastya and another member of her family have uploaded a good number of videos of her competition programmes to YouTube, so the videos were able to guide me.

Anyway, I hope you like all three new threads.

It has been a very interesting few days for the Junior GP assignments.

On Saturday, I found out that Stefania had pulled out of the second Junior GP, Czech Skate in Ostrava, and had been replaced by Varvara.

Then today, the assignments for the fourth Junior GP in Ankara, Turkey, were released. When it was Stefania down to go to Ostrava, and Varvara was the substitute, I was expecting them to swap roles for Ankara. So, when the changes were made at the weekend, I now expected Stefania to be down to go to Ankara, with Varvara as the substitute. And that is indeed what is happening.

HOWEVER, there is not just one substitute for Ankara - there are two! Varvara is the first substitute, but she is joined by Vasilisa BOGOMOLOVA as the second substitute. I have just done a bit of hunting around, and have found her on All Skaters:

All Skaters Bio: https://allskaters.info/vasilisa_bogomolova/

Vasilisa is 6 months younger than Varvara, and is also from Moscow. But, looking at her scores on All Skaters (and going into the Entries / Results page for the most recent competition, to check if it included an Elements segment, but it didn't), she tends to score a LOT higher than Varvara. In fact, nearly all of her overall scores last season were higher than Stefania's absolute PB for the overall score. 😲

Of course, these were domestic competitions in Russia, and there is likely to have been score inflation going on for everybody. But even so. She sounds like a skater who could become a force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future.

You know, Cyprus is getting a very strong Ladies field across the levels, with Marilena, Stefania, Varvara, Vasilisa, and Olivia. Nationals is going to be the Hunger Games in the years to come! :drama:

Which is going to make it very exciting for us fans!

Some Ice Dance news. The entries for the Nebelhorn Trophy have been announced, and there are lots of connections to Cyprus in the Ice Dance list!

  • Angelina KUDRYAVTSEVA / Ilia KARANKEVICH (CYP) are there for what will probably be their Senior level debut.
  • Emilea ZINGAS / Vadym KOLESNIK (USA) are there for what will probably be their first international competition of the season. [Emilea being of Cypriot heritage, and having previously represented the island as a Ladies Singles skater].
  • Sofía VAL / Asaf KAZIMOV (ESP) are there for what will probably be their first international competition of the season. [Sofía having previously been in a partnership with Limassol boy Nikita Vitryanyuk].

Not only that, Angelina / Ilia and Emilea / Vadym are both using music from the Bee Gees in their Short! 🕺

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Can't wait to see the three partnerships in action! And to see how the Bee Gees programmes compare. ;)

:cheer: ALL THE BEST!!! :cheer:

As my first post in this thread since it found a new home (and got a new name!), I am delighted to tell you that there will be a decent-sized contingent of skaters representing Cyprus in action this week at the Denis Ten Memorial Challenge in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Vasilisa and Varvara are in action in Junior Ladies today and tomorrow, while Angelina and Ilia will be in action in Senior Ice Dance tomorrow and Saturday. In all cases, they will be doing their Short Programmes in the opening segment of the day.

I have just posted a reminder post in Varvara's Fan Fest thread but, since they are both skating in the opening group with only one skater between them, I may as well make this reminder post do both of them.

The Junior Ladies SP is due to start at 12:00:00 AQTT (07:00:00 GMT / 08:00:00 BST / 10:00:00 EEST / 10:00:00 MSK). So 2 hours from now.

Vasilisa will be the 4th skater to start. So, fourth and antepenultimate skater to go in Group 1.

Varvara will be the 6th skater to start. So, sixth and final skater to go in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 12:00:00 AQTT (07:00:00 GMT / 08:00:00 BST / 10:00:00 EEST / 10:00:00 MSK). So 2 hours from now.

Vasilisa is due to start at 12:24:00 AQTT (07:24:00 GMT / 08:24:00 BST / 10:24:00 EEST / 10:24:00 MSK). So 2h 24m from now.

Varvara is due to start at 12:35:40 AQTT (07:35:40 GMT / 08:35:40 BST / 10:35:40 EEST / 10:35:40 MSK). So 2h 35m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST VASILISA AND VARVARA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Wow!

I knew Vasilisa was going to be good from looking at her scores in domestic competitions in Russia.

But even I wasn't expecting her to actually WIN the Short Programme!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

What's more, she did it despite being one of only two skaters to have a fall.

And the good news doesn't stop there. Varvara finished the SP in 4th position.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

These are turning into very exciting times for Cypriot skating. I am probably getting ahead of myself, but this is bringing back happy memories of the days when Cyprus had the two Ice Dance partnerships at Advanced Novice level. And both partnerships were regularly at the sharp end of competitions.

And speaking of the Ice Dancers, Angelina and Ilia will be joining the girls in action in Astana tomorrow. They will be doing their Short Dance in the first competition of the day, while the girls will be doing their Free Skates in the second competition of the day.

Reminder posts with more details will be posted in the respective Fan Fest threads in the morning.

And on that note, in light of today's developments, I have changed my mind over how to approach Vasilisa. I had been planning to do all my posts about her in this thread, and then move them out to a separate Fan Fest thread whenever she makes her Junior GP debut. Just like I did with Stefania and Varvara. But I have now decided to give Vasilisa her own Fan Fest thread straight away. She deserves it.

The link will be edited into this post after I post the thread in the morning.

All the best to all the skaters from Cyprus that are in action over the next couple of days.

CaroLiza_fan

Today was a day of mixed emotions for fans of the Cypriot skaters.

First of all, Angelina and Ilia withdrew from the Senior Short Dance. They started the Warm-Up, but they soon went over to the boards. It was clear that Angelina was not well. They stayed there until about half-way through the Warm-Up, and then left the ice.

Get well soon! :ghug:

Next came the Junior Ladies Free Skate, where Varvara and Vasilisa were skating in the Final Group.

Unfortunately, Varvara had a nightmare skate. She had a fall on a Triple Toe about half-way through her programme, and it was clear that it was praying on her mind afterwards. Which led to not a great landing on the next element, the Triple Lutz. And then a fall on the next element, the Triple Salchow. She finished in 6th in the Free Skate, but only dropped one position in the overall standings, to 5th.

:ghug:

Two skaters later, it was Vasilisa's turn (the girl that was 2nd in the SP withdrew through injury). And everything looked totally effortless for her. Well, she did have a fall near the end, on the Triple Flip, just to show that she was actually human. But by then it was obvious that she had won.

But she didn't just win; she destroyed the field! She won the Free Skate alone by 16.08 points! :jaw:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

You have to remember, this was Vasilisa's first ever international competition! 😲

This girl is going places. And the Cypriot team are very lucky to have her.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

First and foremost, we have entered that time of year when a lot of the current team members have birthdays in a short space of time.

Today is Marilena's birthday; Monday coming is Angelina's birthday; and the following Tuesday is Stefania's birthday.

So, to kick it all off:

:cheer: HAPPY 20th BIRTHDAY MARILENA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

For a longer greeting and more news about Marilena, see this post in her Fan Fest.

But that is not all. When I got up this morning, I saw that the Provisional Entry Lists for the Tallinn Trophy have been released. And there is a bumper contingent from Cyprus!

  • Marilena in Senior Ladies
  • Stefania in Junior Ladies
  • Olivia in Advanced Novice Ladies
  • Angelina and Ilia in Senior Ice Dance

:cheer: ALL THE BEST TO ALL OF THEM!!! :cheer:

Finally, if you go to this post in Vasilisa's Fan Fest thread, you will find links to a couple of videos of her in Limassol. And one of them in particular made me smile.

CaroLiza_fan

There have been a lot of developments since my last post here.

First and foremost, today is Stefania's birthday.

:cheer: HAPPY 17th BIRTHDAY STEFANIA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

For a longer greeting and more news about Stefania, see this post in her Fan Fest.

As I said in my previous comment, there is a contingent from Cyprus heading to the Tallinn Trophy in two weeks time. However, it has shrunk a bit, as Angelina and Ilia are no longer on the Senior Ice Dance entry list.

A few days after the Denis Ten Memorial Challenge, Ilia put up an album of photos from Astana, and mentioned in passing that they withdrew "due to injury of Angelina’s foot".

So, I hope that Angelina's foot is getting better now, and that pulling out of the Tallinn Trophy was just to be on the safe side. (She put up an album of photos on Thursday, and her foot didn't look to be giving her any bother).

But, now the big news.

The Entries / Results page for the Interclub part of this week's Volvo Open Cup is up and, as I was hoping, there are a couple of skaters representing Cyprus.

Firstly, Olivia is entered in the younger of the Advanced Novice competitions. Which I wasn't surprised to see. I was actually hoping that she would be going to Riga.

But I got a big shock. There is a skater representing Cyprus in Senior Men! :jaw:

http://www.kristalice.lv/Results/volvoopencup53rd.interclub/CAT001EN.htm

Italian skater Tommaso BARISON has switched to representing Cyprus!

ISU Bio

Rink Results Bio
https://www.rinkresults.com/skater?skater_id=27240

Skating Scores Bio
https://skatingscores.com/ita/men/tommaso_barison/

Because he was still representing Italy as recently as March, he is currently under embargo and is competing as a guest skater in a Senior Men's competition of his own.

I did not see this one coming!

The last time Cyprus had a Men's Singles skater competing internationally was back in 2015. That was Nikita VITRYANYUK in Junior Men.

Adding a Men's skater to the international team for the first time in many years (and for the first time at Senior level) just shows that the Cypriot Fed are making a real push at the moment. And after this development, I wouldn't be surprised if they were making preparations to be represented in Pairs skating for the first time as well.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Oliviia gets her 2024-25 Season underway today at the Volvo Open Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The Advanced Novice 2012-2014 Ladies SP is due to start at 15:30:00 EET (13:30:00 GMT / 16:30:00 MSK). So 8 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 13th skater to start. So, sixth and antepenultimate skater to go in Group 2 (and antepenultimate skater to go in the segment).

Volvo Open Cup Advanced Novice 2012-2014 Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Oliviia finished 1st out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 39.85.

Here is what I wrote about her in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote about her programme:

And here is what I wrote after the final skater in the segment:

Back in September, Junior skater Zhasmin SHLAGA (KGZ) made her first appearance of the season at the Junior GP in Ankara, Turkey. She had done like Oliviia, and modified her Free Skate from last season to make it into an Short Programme. I had loved Zhasmin's "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" programme in it's original form. But, for me anyway, the new SP version just didn't work. And I clearly wasn't the only one that thought that, because she had a different SP the next time we saw her at the Junior GP in Wuxi.

I kinda feel the same about Oliviia's "Bloody Mary" programme. I loved it in it's original form. Hey, it was my favourite programme of last season, bar none. But, the short form version just didn't have the same impact on me. Although Oliviia skated it very well (as evidenced by the fact she is leading!), it did seem like her heart wasn't in it. I may be off the mark, but I get the impression that Oliviia is like me - she preferred it in it's original form. Because her heart was definitely in it last season!

But, that is just what it looks like from where I am sitting. I may be way off the mark. She might just have been having an off day.

Oliviia is currently 2.12 points ahead of 2nd position, and 7.16 points ahead of 3rd position.

Oliviia is sitting in a very good position. She only has one skater that could realistically challenge her for the win. But, she still needs to go out and have a good Free Skate, just to make sure.

Can't wait to see what her new Free Skate is like!

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice 2012-2014 Ladies FS is due to start at 13:45:00 EET (11:45:00 GMT / 14:45:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 12th skater to start. So, sixth and final skater to go in Group 2 (and final skater to go in the segment).

Oliviia finished 1st out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 73.21. This meant that she remained in 15th position overall, with a score of 113.06.

Here is what I wrote about her in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote just before she was introduced:

And here is what I wrote about her programme:

I have mixed feelings about the tactic used of modifying both of her old FS programmes from last season to become her Advanced Novice programmes for this season. On the one hand, I loved both programmes in their original forms. On the other hand, being modified to suit the Advanced Novice requirements seems to have resulted in Oliviia losing the connection with them that made them so magical last season.

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 3.59 points ahead of 2nd position, and 16.77 points ahead of 3rd position.

Overall, Oliviia finished 5.71 points ahead of 2nd position, and 27.00 points ahead of 3rd position.

Well, she picked up where she left off last season, with another win. Oliviia has now won 9 🥇 Gold Medals in her last 10 international competitions. She has been unbeaten in international competitions for nearly 19 months. That is 8 international 🥇 Gold Medals on the trot, starting with the Wolmar Spring Cup back in April 2023. Admittedly, she has been beaten in four domestic competitions in Estonia since then, and the international event she didn't win was also in Estonia, but she was still on the podium in all of those events.

This girl is good.

Oliviia is back in action today at her home rink for the Tallinn Trophy in Estonia.

The Advanced Novice Ladies SP is due to start at 18:45:00 EET (16:45:00 GMT / 18:45:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

Unfortunately, so as to avoid the video being zapped due to a copyright claim, the YouTube channel owners have had to mute the music. 😞

Oliviia finished 2nd out of 35 in the SP, with a score of 43.28.

Here is what I wrote about her in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

And here is what I wrote about her programme:

Oliviia is currently 0.16 points behind 1st position, and 2.07 points ahead of 3rd position.

I have recently started paying more attention to the total Base Values of programmes when doing these reports, and the fact that Oliviia is not leading is purely down to the Base Values of the two programmes. Because the leader made mistakes. Oliviia didn't. But because the Belgian girl's programme was worth a full 2 points more than Oliviia's, she was able to come out on top.

In case you are wondering what the difference was, for the combination jump, the leader did a Triple Lutz-Double Toe, while Oliviia did a Triple Loop-Double Toe. And for one of the individual jumps, the leader did a Triple Flip, while Oliviia did a Triple Salchow. All the other elements were the same.

So, I can kinda understand now why Oliviia was not happy. But, with being so close, she has a good opportunity to win the title if she has a good Free Skate.

So let's hope she does have a good Free Skate!

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Ladies FS is due to start at 12:05:00 EET (10:05:00 GMT / 12:05:00 MSK). So 4 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 34th and penultimate skater to start. So, sixth and penultimate skater to go in Group 5.

The Group 5 Warm-Up is due to start at 15:41:02 EET (13:41:02 GMT / 15:41:02 MSK). So 7h 36m from now.

Oliviia is due to start at 16:16:02 EET (14:16:02 GMT / 16:16:02 MSK). So 8h 11m from now.

Oliviia finished 1st out of 35 in the FS, with a score of 77.70. This meant that she climbed to 1st position overall, with a score of 120.98.

Here is what I wrote about her in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote about her programme:

Here is what I wrote after the final skater:

And here is what I wrote about the antics after the Podium Ceremonies:

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 5.99 points ahead of 2nd position, and 7.30 points ahead of 3rd position.

Overall, Oliviia finished 7.45 points ahead of 2nd position, and 8.06 points ahead of 3rd position.

What a difference just over a week makes. During the Volvo Open Cup, I felt that the modifications that had been made to the "Bloody Mary" and "Boléro" programmes to make them fit the Advanced Novice rules had resulted in Oliviia losing her connection with them. Well, she has found the connection again!

Today is the opening day of the Bosphorus Cup in Istanbul, and we have a very exciting prospect coming up this afternoon.

In 8h 30m from now, Stefania is due to start her SP. (The FS is tomorrow).

SP Report

And in 8h 36m from now, Vasilisa is due to start her SP. (The FS is tomorrow).

SP Report; FS Report

Yes, they are going back-to-back. :drama: Which is going to make it fun for me posting in the competition thread!

Meanwhile at the Santa Claus Cup in Budapest, Hungary, Oliviia is due to do her SP this afternoon as well. But the Time Schedule PDF's are not working, so I don't know the exact time. (The FS is on Friday)

SP Report; FS Report

On Friday and Saturday, Marilena will be in action at the Bosphorus Cup.

And on Saturday and Sunday, Angelina and Ilia will be in action at the Santa Claus Cup.

SD Report

So, by my reckoning, Varvara is the only skater in the international team that is getting this week off!

:cheer: ALL THE BEST TO ALL OF THEM!!! :cheer:

Oliviia is back in action today at the Santa Claus Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

The Advanced Novice Ladies SP is due to start at 16:30:00 CET (15:30:00 GMT / 17:30:00 EET / 18:30:00 MSK). So 9 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 8th skater to start. So, first skater to go in Group 2.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Santa Claus Cup Advanced Novice Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Oliviia finished 5th out of 29 in the SP, with a score of 40.59.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Santa Claus Cup, as I was concentrating on the Bosphorus Cup in Istanbul.

Oliviia only had problems with one element - the combination jump that was her second element. She under-rotated on the first part, the Triple Loop, and fell. But in spite of this, she then got up and did the second part, the Double Toe, anyway. But because she had already fell, the second part got invalidated.

Oliviia is currently 0.25 points behind 4th position, and 3.19 points ahead of 6th position. Oliviia is the bottom skater of a group of 5 skaters covered by 3.23 points, stretching up to the leader.

Although she is in 5th position after the SP, if she has a good Free Skate, Oliviia could still win this. And even if she has a disappointing Free Skate, because of the way the gaps are, she is likely to only lose one position.

So let's hope she does have a good Free Skate!

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Ladies FS is due to start at 12:00:00 CET (11:00:00 GMT / 13:00:00 EET / 14:00:00 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 25th skater to start. So, fourth skater to go in Group 4.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.
