Grand Prix 2016-17 News/Speculation

I think the GP assignments are based on updated world standing, because I remember being surprised that it was like that...but maybe I'm wrong...although the fact that the ISU announcement says "after season" and not "at the end of the season" in my opinion means that it refers to the updated list

I'm counting on Kolyada to go to TEB instead of COR since for the past two seasons, Russia has sent their highest finishing single skater at World to TEB not COR (Max and Liza this season, Max and Julia last season.) And most importantly, I'm planning to go to TEB next season (it'll be my first time ever experience to watch FS live!) and I desparately wanna see Mikhail there! :hap85: But I'll be happy enough to see P/C :)
Medvedeva loves to compete at Moscow.
5th Event of Russian Cup at 2010, 2011, 2012, Rostelecom Cup at 2015. Always good results, place 1 or 2.
So she may choose Rostelecom Cup at 2016.

I agree the wording is confusing & maybe you are all right it's the updated WR, but then it would be stupid as new season starts in July, after GP announcement...

EDIT: I forgot that since Peng/Zhang & Yu/Jin switched partners they also have no guaranteed spots at GP. Ice Dance & Pairs are hard to predict, since you can never be sure the teams will stay as they are.

I think both pairs are guaranteed spots thanks to P/Z's 4th place at Worlds in 2015.

Yes, it's really confusing and not much logical... honestly the whole GP assignments process is super complicated, maybe they're just trying to be as fair as they can (with questionable results:palmf:)!

I forgot P/Z was 4th in 2015. So each pair will have one spot guaranteed indeed and nothing changed.

Well, again, why do all assume that grad prix assignemnts are based on updated rankings? The fact that the same list is posted on FSU proves nothing. It may be the same user or someone might have just copied it as well.

It's not the same user. (Nor does it look copied & pasted, as some of the names are listed under different lists--though ultimately the names are the same). The stat expert on FSU crunches numbers for every event. I don't know the rules, but I tend to think she does. She makes mistakes just like everyone so before I saw chuck's list, I was going to inquire about the different names. However, having seen that list, I assume the issue was the 70% adjustment as mentioned.

I'm guessing Cup of Russia would be Med, Sotskova and Sotnikova. I/Z probably doesn't need host spot. They are high on the SB list. Probably B/S, Z/G and an open spot. If S/B and I/Z both get two initially, Popova/Mozgov might even get the last spot.

Adelina will be on tour during CoR.

We already discussed this in State of Russian ID thread. The problem is that 44 of 48 spots are guaranteed to someone already. Ilinykh/Zhiganshin, Bobrova/Soloviev and Stepanova/Bukin will all most probably need home spot to have 2 GP events. Unless some teams with guaranteed spots will get injured.

Chance for Popova/Mozgov to receive a GP assignment is next to non-existent.

Okay, I'm not an expert myself, so I won't argue, especially since sarama pointed out that the rule I based my opinion on, can be interpreted in other way. I still think it's stupid if it really is like that though, but that wouldn't be the first or last rule that doesn't make sense for me ;)

The only 100% sure thing I can think about for GP assignments is that Yuzuru gets NHK Trophy and Papadakis/Cizeron gets TEB.

I mean of course we won't know for a while, but come on, it's guaranteed they'll get those assignments.

She is guaranteed a spot but I think he is not. You are only allowed to use the comeback couple provision once, and he already used it with Peng based on his past results. Peng herself hasn't used it based on her past results, so her and Jin will be guaranteed 2 spots but I am not sure the same is true of Yu/Zhang because of the part of the rule that says you can only do this once.

Brendan is at WS40 :yahoo:

And he's at SB49 :yay: Last year he picked up a GP at SB58

filed under: things that make karne happy

Thanks Marin for info :) If they have updated yesterday I wouldn't even have reason to discuss :p But ISU isn't infallible and they put Renata Oganesian/Mark Bardei to both Pairs and Ice Dance rankings :laugh2:

Hmm, Kailani at SB58. I wonder...Brendan picked up one at more or less the same spot on the SB list, perhaps Kailani could too. Brooklee at SB71 probably won't get one except as a replacement. Oh, wouldn't that be something, if we could have two Australian ladies on the Grand Prix!
